To handle conflict in the workplace, I like to use “Crucial conversations”. A crucial conversation is a conversation in which stakes are high, opinions may differ, and emotions may run strong. These are not always easy conversations to have, but it allows us to explain issues with the person and work together to come up with a solution. It is important to be upfront and honest during these conversations, but you also need to be careful with the language you use so that the other party does not feel attacked or blamed for the issue.

If I needed to handle conflict between two nurses on my unit, I would talk to them both individually first. It is good to hear both sides of the story to see where similarities and discrepancies are. I would then offer to mediate a conversation between the two nurses, creating a safe space for open communication and problem solving. If the conversation did not go well or the issue was left unresolved or even escalated, I would reach out to the unit supervisor or human resources for further assistance. A few days or a week or so after the initial conversation happened, I would want to reach out to both parties and follow up with them. I would want to make sure that they are on good terms and that the situation was handled professionally, and that they will continue to work together in a professional manner. It is not easy to continue to work with people on a daily basis when you have ongoing issues with each other.
