Describe one of the current issues identified by State Boards of Nursing in the state you will be applying for your nursing license.
I will be applying for license in MN for my registered nursing license after completing a ADN program at Rasmussen University. One of the current issues identified by the MN state boards is the illegal use of narcotics in nurses and other staff on the floor in a clinical setting. The controlled substances drug diversion in Minnesota can lead to patient harm and jeprodize patient safety (Minnesota Dept. Health, 2022). There has been an increasing number of controlled substances that are being stolen such as hydrocodone, oxycodone, hydromorphone, morphine sulfate, and fentanyl. Any kind of theft of controlled substances is a felony offense. The RN can loose his/her lisence.
Discuss how the nurse leaders and managers would educate the unit within the organization.
The nurse leaders and managers can start a campaign to decrease the loss of the narcotics/ controlled substances. The nurse manager can educate the floor nurses on effects of stealing and potential effects on the body systems, job security and state liscensure. The State has tried to provide the hospitals with resources, such as training materials, sample policies and procedures, and reporting guidelines and requirements that providers can use when they suspect a drug diversion has occurred (Minnesota Dept. Health, 2022).
