Critique a Research Article

A critique is a method of displaying a logical and organized analysis of a written or oral piece. Critique can provide the readers with both positive and negative outcomes depending on the author. The purpose of this assignment is for the student to perform a critique on a research article that deals with today’s health issues. In this paper the student must be diligent at what the author are claiming, taking into account the research methods being utilized and look for pros and cons of the researcher’s outcomes.

The assignment must be a minimal of five pages, excluding title page and references. The assignment must be strictly following APA guidelines, points will be deducted if otherwise. Do not use first person throughout the paper until the section called evaluate the paper.  It will be divided in the following manner:

Title page: Give the name of the article, the authors name(s) and your name. Following APPA

                Introduction:

·         Provide an overview of the author’s research problem, research questions and main point including how the author supports his or her point.

·         Explain what the author initial          objectives (hypothesis) and results including the process he or she used to arrive at such conclusion.

Evaluate the Research Methods: in paragraph form answer the following:

·         Does the author provide a literature review?

·         Is the research current and relevant to today existing health issues?

·         Describe the research type utilized? – experimental, non-experimental, quasi experimental, etc.

·         Evaluate the sample (size, composition, or in the way the sample was selected in relation to the purpose of the study? Was the sample appropriate for the research or was it bias?

·          How practicaldoes this work seem to you? How does the author suggest research results could be applied and how do youbelieve they could be applied?

·          Could the study have been improved in your opinion? If so provide how you think it could have improved.

·          Is the writing in the article clear straightforward?

·          Can further research be conducted on this subject? Explain

Neurological System Case Study

A 35-year-old male is admitted to a hospital following a minor car accident. He was driving home and fell asleep at the wheel. This is the third accident he has had in the past year. He also falls asleep regularly at work, at the dinner table, at church, and, in fact, anywhere. When he becomes excited or enraged, he suddenly becomes weak and falls. At night, he often has bizarre, terrifying dreams. During these dreams, he feels as if he were paralyzed.

Based on the scenario given above, answer the following questions:

  • Describe how a nerve impulse is transmitted from one neuron to the next.
  • Compare the structure and functions of the CNS and PNS.
  • What is the probable diagnosis for this man’s condition?
  • What parts of the person’s brain could have been affected?
  • What sleep state do these symptoms resemble?
  • How would an electroencephalogram (EEG) look like during the sleep condition of this patient?
  • What type of treatments (physical or chemical) would you prescribe for the patient?

Using the data set supplied in StatCrunch, provide the following for the variable(s) of your choice:

  1. Frequency distribution of a variable and bar graph of the same variable
  2. Descriptives of a continuous variable: mean, median, skewness, kurtosis, standard deviation and graph of that variable
  3. Cross tabulation of two variables
  4. Comparison of the effect of three or more groups (single variable) on a single continuous variable
  5. Scatterplot of two continuous variables
  6. Correlation between the two continuous variables from #5 above

Think carefully about what kind of variables to choose for the given tasks.

A short descriptive statement should accompany each of the above including a description of the variables used and any meaning that may be attached to the results. The student must show that she or he is able to synthesize and apply the materials learned in class. Part of the class computer time is expected to be spent on this project. Submit to the appropriate Drop Box in a Word document.

Adoption of New Health Technology Systems

As a nurse, you can have a great impact on the success or failure of the adoption of EHRs. It is important for nurses to understand their role as change agents and the ways they can influence others when addressing the challenges of changing to a drastically different way of doing things.

Everett Rogers, a pioneer in the field of the diffusion of innovations, identified five qualities that determine individual attitudes towards adopting new technology (2003). He theorized that individuals are concerned with:

  • Relative advantage: The individual adopting the new innovation must see how it will be an improvement over the old way of doing things.
  • Compatibility with existing values and practices: The adopter must understand how the new innovation aligns with current practices.
  • Simplicity: The adopter must believe he or she can easily master the new technology; the more difficult learning the new system appears, the greater the resistance that will occur.
  • Trialability: The adopter should have the opportunity to “play around’ with the new technology and explore its capabilities.
  • Observable results: The adopter must have evidence that the proposed innovation has been successful in other situations.

Note: You are not required to purchase Rogers’ book or pursue further information regarding his list of five qualities. The information provided here is sufficient to complete this Assignment. The full reference for Rogers’ work is provided below the due date on this page.

For this Assignment, you assume the role of a nurse facilitator in a small hospital in upstate New York. You have been part of a team preparing for the implementation of a new electronic health records system. Decisions as to the program that will be used have been finalized, and you are now tasked with preparing the nurses for the new system. There has been an undercurrent of resistance expressed by nurses, and you must respond to their concerns. You have a meeting scheduled with the nurses 1 week prior to the training on the new EHR system. Consider how you can use the five qualities outlined by Rogers (2003) to assist in preparing the nurses for the upcoming implementation.

To prepare

  • Review the Learning Resources this week about successful implementations of EHRs.
  • Consider how you would present the new EHR system to the nurses to win their approval.
  • Reflect on the five qualities outlined by Rogers. How would addressing each of those areas improve the likelihood of success?

Qualitative Annotated Bibliography

For this assignment you will continue to review current research from South’s Online Library and provide a critical evaluation on that research through an annotated bibliography. An annotated bibliography is a brief summary and analysis of the journal article reviewed. For more information on annotated bibliographies please visit Purdue’s OWL: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/614/01/

A total of four annotated bibliographies are to be submitted (not to exceed one page each). The articles must come from nursing scholarly literature and may not be older than 5 years since publication. Please note that the articles must be research based and reflect a qualitative methodology (review our reading assignments). Web pages, magazines, textbooks, and other books are not acceptable.

Each annotation must address the following critical elements:

  • Explanation of the main purpose and scope of the cited work
  • Brief description of the research conducted
  • Value and significance of the work (e.g., study’s findings, scope of the research project) as a contribution to the subject under consideration
  • Possible shortcomings or bias in the work
  • Conclusions or observations reached by the author
  • Summary as to why this research lends evidence to support the potential problem identified specific to your role specialization.

Please submit to the W2: Assignment 2 Dropbox by Friday, January 20, 2017.

The Impact of Intrinsic Motivation

Reflect for a moment on your nursing career. About what are you most passionate? When do you feel you are at your best? What brings you the greatest satisfaction in your work? Positive feelings in the workplace are usually fueled by intrinsic motivators: healthy relationships, meaningful purpose, competence, choice, and progress. As a nurse manager, it is helpful to recognize what motivates you to perform well in your own job. You should also take time to understand the motivations of employees. By speaking to staff about their interests and professional goals, nurse managers can build relationships and thus provide appropriate motivators.

For this Assignment, you examine your personal work experiences to determine which of the five intrinsic motivators are more influential in shaping your positive feelings about the workplace.

To prepare

Reflect on your work history, from your first job to your current employment.

Select one time period or situation in which you felt professionally happy, motivated, and fulfilled in your job. What do you remember most about this time period? What are, or were, the various personal and professional factors that helped to shape these feelings?

Select one time period or situation in which you felt professionally unhappy, disengaged, and unfulfilled in your job. What do you remember most about this time period? What are, or were, the various personal and professional factors that caused these feelings?

Review the selected pages from Chapter 7, “Coaching and Developing Others” in the course text, From Management to Leadership: Strategies for Transforming Health Care. Consider the potential influence of the five intrinsic motivators during your chosen time period or situation.

Which intrinsic motivators seem to resonate more with your own perceptions of job fulfillment?

Which motivators do you believe have greater influence on your professional well-being?

Review the media, “Fostering a Positive Workplace.” How can nurse leaders use their awareness of the five motivators to engage and retain nursing staff?

BREAST CANCER

Joan Barker, age fifty-six years, comes for a routine physical examination. She states that she has been in perfect health and has no complaints. She has a history of asthma but currently requires no medications of any kind. Her physical examination is completely normal, except for a 2-cm firm, nontender, nonmobile mass in the upper outer quadrant of her left breast. She indicates that she does not perform regular breast self-examination and that she did not know the mass was there. She has no family history of breast cancer and has never been pregnant.

Answer the following questions about Ms. Barker’s condition:.

  • What term is used to describe the benign condition that may have caused Ms. Barker’s breast mass?
  • What is inside the cysts of fibrocystic breast disease?
  • Mammography and ultrasonography reveal a solid lesion (not cystic). What is the most common type of breast cancer?
  • Biopsy determines that Ms. Barker has invasive carcinoma of the breast. What is the difference between ductal carcinoma in situ and invasive carcinoma of the breast?
  • Ms. Barker’s breast cancer has metastasized to her lungs. What is the difference between metastatic lung cancer and primary lung cancer?
  • What is your view on cancer?
