Personal Health and Wellness

Body Image

Perception versus reality. In relation to weight and body image, perception and reality are often different. The average American woman is 5 feet 4 inches and weighs 140 pounds, while the average American model is 5 feet 11 inches and weighs 117 pounds. Which is a more realistic representation of a woman?

Contemporary advertisements and media can impact a person’s idea of body image as well as an individual’s culture and economic status. Think about the factors that influence the perception of body image. Consider how body image might affect an individual’s dietary choices and physical exercise. As you think about how perception and body image impact personal health, consider whether there is a genetic component to body weight and whether weight or body shape is a result of genetics or behavior.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review Chapter 9 in Health: The basics, 10th edition. Consider the role nutrition plays in maintaining body weight
  • Review Chapter 10 in Health: The basics, 10th edition. Think about how a healthy weight can impact body image.
  • Review the article “Body image change and improved eating self-regulation in a weight management intervention in women.” Consider the impact of body image on dietary choices.
  • Review the media “Dimensions of Health Wheel.” Focus on how the perception of body image affects health and wellness.
  • Review the multimedia piece “Dimensions of Health Wheel.” Consider the role of genetics and behavior on body weight and shape.
  • Review the multimedia piece “Dimensions of Health Wheel.” Focus on how the perception of body image affects health and wellness. Also, consider the role of genetics and behavior on body weight and shape.

With these thoughts in mind:

Select one of the Discussion Questions.

By Day 4, post three factors that influence the perception of body image and explain the reasons why. Then explain two ways body image might impact personal health and wellness.

OR

By Day 4, post your position on whether weight and body shape is more of a factor of genetics or behavior. Support your position with references from this week’s Learning Resources.

Occupational Stressors Stress Perception Levels and Coping Styles of Medical Surgical

Your assigned article for critique is:

Wakim, N. (2014). Occupational stressors, stress perception levels, and coping styles of medical surgical RNs. Journal of Nursing Administration, 44(12), 632-639. doi:10.1097/NNA.0000000000000140

Instructions:  A major skill that is learned in this course is how to critically read and critique nursing research articles.  The purpose for critiquing an article is to critically evaluate the research process followed by the author(s) of the assigned article. This is an information-intensive, time-intensive process that is not learned overnight.   To demonstrate your skill at critiquing an article, you will complete this open-book multiple choice assignment.

Here’s how you should approach completing this week’s assignment to finish critiquing an article:

1.  First, do your assigned reading in Grove, Gray, and Burns (2015) and complete the reading worksheets early in the week.  This will introduce you to the critique skills you will need for the week.

2.  Skim the entire instructor assigned research article that has been posted on Blackboard for you so that you will have an idea of what it is about.  Lightly cross out the abstract for the article (you won’t be using it). Then, for this week, re-read carefully from the study design section through the end of the article.

3.  Print this document and find the best answer to each question below based on your Grove, Gray, and Burns (2015) assigned reading for the week and what you have read in the instructor assigned research article.

4.  Some of the questions in the critique assignment below will seem unfamiliar to you. Look up key terms from the question in your textbook.  Some examples of these terms might be: power analysis, inter-rater reliability, and generalization. You can also look in Chapter 12 for an example of a critical appraisal (or critique) of a quantitative research article.

5. Once you have completed this assignment “on paper”, go into blackboard and enter your answers by the assignment due date and time listed in the syllabus.  Ignore any wording from Blackboard that indicates that “this is a test” and carefully enter your answers from this document.

6.  You will have two access attempts to record your answers.  This is given to you so that if you encounter technical difficulties on your first attempt, or you would like a second attempt to try to improve your grade, you may do so.  You will not be able to see the questions that you missed when you submit your attempt.  Blackboard will record the highest grade from the two submissions.

If you have questions about this assignment, you can post them to your group discussion board for help.  Please do not post the exact question from the assignment below and ask the group for the answer as this would constitute academic dishonesty.

The Primary Care Clinic

Due Week 4 and worth 160 points

You are the manager of a new primary care clinic located about twenty five (25) miles outside of a small city (population of 50,000). With five (5) family physicians, two (2) nurse practitioners, two (2) physicians’ assistants (PAs), and twenty (20) clinical support staff consisting of RNs, LPNs, and CMAs, the clinic provides primary care services to a diverse community of people living and working outside the city limits. Originally a rural area, the community has been growing and now includes promising opportunities in employment, education, and comfortable living spaces for young families. However, there are still many residents who struggle to make ends meet with older farms that have belonged to families for generations.

The central city includes two (2) large acute care facilities, and one (1) tertiary care facility that is known for its excellent pulmonary care. Both acute care hospitals provide the usual services such as labor and delivery, outpatient surgery, chronic diseases care, etc. and have fully equipped ancillary departments, such as lab and radiology. Up until this point, the residents have used the facilities’ emergency departments for routine illnesses and conditions when their private physicians were not readily available.

Write a five to seven (5-7) page paper in which you:

  1. Analyze some of the key social, political, and economic factors that have led to the proliferation of urgent care facilities and primary care practices over the last 20-30 years.
  2. Create a comprehensive mission statement for the clinic, and discuss how it will facilitate the provision of quality services.
  3. Analyze and discuss one (1) or more directions the clinic might take to grow its business. Determine what factors you would consider when deciding what services to provide in-house and which ones to affiliate with other institutions.
  4. Decide how you will determine if the clinic is meeting its goals. Identify three (3) performance measurements you could use to evaluate the success of the clinic’s services. Begin by naming a goal, and then identify a quantifiable measurement you could use for each to determine if you are coming close or falling short of the goal.
  5. Determine how you would then address whatever opportunities for improvement seem to exist and what processes you would put in place.
  6. Use at least three (3) quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources.
  7. Format your assignment according to the following formatting requirements:
    1. Typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides.
    2. Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page is not included in the required page length.
    3. Include a reference page. Citations and references must follow APA format. The reference page is not included in the required page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Analyze the critical management issues, purpose, functions, and performance measures of different departments within healthcare organizations.
  • Examine the political, economic, and social forces that have influenced the organizational foundations of the United States healthcare system.
  • Explain how public policy has shaped the development of the U.S. healthcare system.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in health services organization management.
  • Write clearly and concisely about health services organization management using proper writing mechanics.

Health Illiteracy and Vulnerability

A number of factors play a role in health assessment, wellness, and health status. Health literacy and vulnerability are two key factors that health care professionals should look for when conducting health assessments.

For this discussion, review Runkle, Brock-Martin, Karmaus, and Svendsen’s 2012 article, “Secondary Surge Capacity: A Framework for Understanding Long-Term Access to Primary Care for Medically Vulnerable Populations in Disaster Recovery.” Reflect on populations that are considered vulnerable and what factors contribute to this.

For this discussion, define how health literacy (and illiteracy) and vulnerability impact health assessments and the ability of individuals, families, or communities to acquire and maintain health and wellness. Answer the following:

  • What factors contribute to health illiteracy and vulnerability?
  • What can health care professionals do to improve health literacy and health status for vulnerable populations?

You may also use other assigned readings and peer-reviewed journals from the Capella library or the Internet to support your answer.

Your initial post should be at least 150 words and have at least one APA-formatted reference.

Many factors contribute to an individual’s or subpopulation’s vulnerability. After reading the chapters in your text, as well as Chin, Clarke, Nocon, Casey, Goddu, Keesecker, and Cook’s 2012 article, “A Roadmap and Best Practices for Organizations to Reduce Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care,” respond to the following:

  • What are some factors that contribute to an individual’s or a subpopulation’s vulnerability?
  • What are some strategies that health care organizations should implement to reduce racial and ethnic disparities?

Strategies for Improvement Regarding Health Issues

In this assignment, you will identify a health issue and a specific population with a high prevalence to this health issue within your community. For example, you may choose heart disease and identify the elderly population. Identify strategies for improvement regarding this health concern with this identified population.

In addition to using academic sources to help create a health action plan, consult with at least one professional in your community. The person you consult with could be a nurse or someone working within the health care field. You can do this via phone, in person, or through the Internet.

Think about what questions would be good to ask:

  • What are some current outreach strategies used with this population?
  • Are there local community resources that work with this population?
  • Are there other community resources that might help increase health awareness for this health issue?
  • What are the biggest challenges for health providers to address this community health issue?

Then, use this information to act as a nurse leader to develop a plan to deal with this issue.

This action plan should include the following details:

  • Outreach.
    • Describe strategies or techniques to promote health care prevention and disease maintenance within your identified population.
    • Explain the cultural considerations that health care providers need to be aware of when working with this population and health care concern.
  • Treatment or clinical setting.
