Body Mass Index

The calculation of Body Mass Index (BMI) is an important measurement tool for determining relative disease risk for preventable conditions like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. These conditions may be controlled and/or prevented by maintaining a healthy weight relative to height. For instance, the higher the BMI number above the normal range (18-25), the greater the degree of overweight.

National indicators for obesity, as determined by the BMI report that women are more likely to have higher BMI’s in comparison to men. In addition, minority women including African Americans, Hispanics, and Asian Americans are more likely to have a higher BMI in comparison to white women. However, recent research suggests that current standards for measuring BMI may not be accurate for African American women. Read the article “Ethnic-Specific BMI and Waist Circumference Thresholds” and create a 4- to 5-page report in Microsoft Word document that covers the following:

  • Explain why the current BMI scale may not be an accurate measure of obesity for African American women.
  • How can these findings impact the manner in which physicians communicate with their female patients about weight loss and disease prevention? In your explanation, be sure to describe at least one positive and one negative implication that these findings might have on how physicians counsel their female patients regarding weight-loss.
  • What influence might these findings have on societal perceptions of body image and weight loss?
  • Explain how an accurate perception of body image is associated with appropriate weight-control behavior.
  • What social and cultural factors influence African American women’s risk of becoming obese?
  • What role do the media play in promoting healthy eating behaviors in women and girls?
  • What can be the implications for healthcare policy as a result of the findings of the study?

Support your responses with examples.

Assignment 2 Grading Criteria

Legal and Ethical Conduct

All nurses need to be familiar with the laws and regulations that govern their practice: their state’s Nurse Practice Act, ANA’s Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, specialty group standards of practice, etc. In addition, basic ethical principles guide nurses’ decision-making process every day. ANA’s Code of Ethics and ANA’s Social Policy Statement are two important documents that outline nurses’ ethical responsibilities to their patients, themselves, and their profession. This said, there is a dilemma: The laws are not always compatible with the ethical positions nurses sometimes take. This Discussion focuses on such a dilemma.

To prepare:

Review the relationship between the law and ethics.

Consider the ethical responsibility of nurses in ensuring patient autonomy, beneficence, non-malfeasance, and justice.

Read the following scenario:

Lena is a community health care nurse who works exclusively with HIV-positive and AIDS patients. As a part of her job, she evaluates new cases and reviews confidential information about these patients. In the course of one of these reviews, Lena learns that her sister’s boyfriend has tested HIV positive. Lena would like to protect her sister from harm and begins to consider how her sister can find out about her boyfriend’s health status.

Consult at least two resources to help you establish Lena’s legal and ethical position. These resources might include your state’s Nurse Practice Act, the ANA’s Code of Ethics, ANA’s Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, and internal or external standards of care.

Consider what action you would take if you were Lena and why.

Determine whether the law and the ANA’s standards support or conflict with that action.

TECHNOLOGY IMPACT ON HEALTH SECURITY INFORMATION

  • Examine the impact that internet technology has on the security of health-related information
—Discuss different ways the Internet impacts health care, for example, WebMD. Discuss and list the pros and cons of each application, website, online journals, or other including accuracy of the information in each one. Discuss security issues of each and provide recommendations to resolve these issues. .

Assignment Instructions:

  1. Form a group of two students. Topics will be assigned by week 2.
  2. Address this issue through the lens of the nurse informaticist
  • Consist of 15–20 slides in length, including the title and reference slides.
  • Use the following bolded topics and subtopics (required) to guide the flow of discussion in your presentation.
  • Define and describe the issue. (one to two slides)
    • Describe the background and history of the issue. (two to three slides)
    • Perform a review of the literature. (three to four slides)
*Summarize what is known about the issue.*Discuss solutions to the issue as identified from the literature.
    • Explain how the issue is being addressed at the organization where each team member is employed. (one slide per organization)
    • Propose a best practice solution integrating information from the review of literature and from team member’s organizations. (one to two slides)
    • Conclusion – one slide
Use course content, your textbooks, professional journal articles, and professional websites as references for your work. (A minimum of 10 professional references with at least five (5) nursing journal articles required.)
  1. Submit your assignment electronically in the designated location. Sometimes, a voice-over PowerPoint presentation is large and will not submit if the size is larger than the designated drop box. Review the size of your file and check with your instructor regarding any size limits for submission.

Group Presentation Tips: When submitting a PowerPoint written by multiple people, keep the following items in mind: Keep format and font the same throughout the presentation; make sure content flows between slides, avoid duplication of information; and each team person should be responsible for reading the completed presentation, making sure format, grammar, APA format, and content are seamless and flow. In other words, a group presentation should read as though one person was responsible for the writing. It should not be obvious to the reader that more than one person was involved in the assignment. Voice recordings should be done in a quiet environment with easily audible sound levels.

VISUAL AID SYSTEM

This is a discussion forum . You are to make at least three significant posts that help develop the discussion around these topics. You should also thread your posts to related information. You must read what others post and connect your thoughts to those already on the board. Working on different topics is strongly suggested, but not required. Staying with the discussion throughout the week is strongly encouraged.

  • There are 4 topics and you may participate in discussion on any or all of the topics.  While you should incorporate the content of readings into your posts, I discourage exclusive quoting or paraphrasing of the material. Instead, I ask you to present your own understanding of the information by sharing your knowledge and incorporating the information you learned by providing your own examples.
  • From Sunday-Sunday, you should make at least three posts to the board. All posts should be 200-250 words and must be connected to the ongoing discussion (which is why you must read and keep up with the discussions) and should be connected literally by threading to the existing discussion. You do this by clicking “reply” at the bottom of the post you want to connect to NOT “reply” under the topic. Exception: If you are the first to post on a topic, you are starting the discussion by clicking reply under the topic.

Describe a real-life scenario in which the speaker’s visual aids might detract from the desired audience response. Be specific in explaining what went wrong with the visual aids and suggest alternative visual aids to remedy the situation. Compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages of the visual aids you might use in an upcoming speech.

Remember that your discussion response must include the following:

  1. A reflection on the concept we are discussing. Give us a summary of things you learned about this concept from your assigned chapter readings.
  2. A thorough example/discussion to support your reflection.
  3. A final statement that tells us what you take away from this week’s lesson.
  4. Properly formatted in-text citations and references.
  5. Strong grammar, spelling, and mechanics.
  6. In total your discussion should be at least 250 words.
