Personal Philosophy of Practice

Being able to articulate your personal worldview can help you formulate a personal philosophy of practice and enhance your influence on patients and the industry. In this assignment, you will have an opportunity to reflect on your current and future practice, and the ways worldview and nursing theory influence that practice.

Draft a 1,000-1,250 word paper in which you:

  1. Describe your personal worldview, including the religious, spiritual, and cultural elements that you think most influence your personal philosophy of practice and attitude towards patient care.
  2. Choose a specific nursing theory that is most in line with your personal philosophy of practice and approach to patient care and discuss the similarities. Explain how the nursing theory reinforces your approach to care.
  3. Include in your explanation a specific example of a past or current practice and how your worldview and the nursing theory could assist you in resolving this issue.
  4. Finally, explain how your worldview and the nursing theory will assist you in further developing your future practice.

Address Questions 1 through 4

You are required to cite five to 10 sources to complete this assignment. Sources must be published within the last 5 years and appropriate for the assignment criteria and nursing content.

Promoting Safety and Quality

Throughout your education, patient safety and improving the quality of patient care have been examined. Through numerous readings and media pieces, you have heard about Never Events. These are serious and costly medical errors that are preventable, such as wrong-side surgery, medication errors, and hospital-acquired infections. Each of these types of medical errors is preventable.

The consequences of such errors are now financial as well as legal and emotional. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services no longer reimburse for medical errors classified as Never Events.

As a nurse, how can you help to prevent these types of medical errors? What is your accountability for clinical outcomes? There are standards and core measures in place that guide nursing practice. In addition, the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) examines those components of clinical care that are specific to nursing.

The NDNQI quantifies, or assesses, these nurse-sensitive components and provides specific feedback on how well nursing practice is being executed in those areas related to patient care.

This week, you will consider a series of articles that focus on strategies for ensuring safety and quality care for patients. You will also explore how successful, efficient teamwork between nurses, nursing leaders, physicians, and other medical personnel can help prevent many of the Never Events from occurring and decrease the likelihood of such events in the future.

Learning Objectives

Students will:
  • Analyze the core measures and standards for nursing practice that promote patient safety and quality of care outcomes
  • Analyze the impact of the nurse’s role in clinical outcomes for organizations
  • Analyze nurse-specific challenges for influencing change in quality improvement
  • Analyze the role of the nurse in supporting the organization’s strategic agenda in improving clinical outcomes

Learning Resources

Prior Knowledge

It is not uncommon for students to be required to complete group projects or to work as part of a team. While obtaining your RN credentials, or at some time in your work career, you have more than likely at some point been part of a unit or a collaborative team. Reflect on that experience of working with others to achieve a common goal. How did the actions of your team members impact your success as a team? Consider how this same philosophy applies within an organization. How might the actions of the individuals influence the success of the organization?

Discussion: Promoting Safety and Quality

In the article “Managing to Improve Quality: The Relationship Between Accreditation Standards, Safety Practices, and Patient Outcomes,” the authors discuss the growing trend by medical insurance companies to eliminate reimbursement for Never Events. As these types of mistakes should be easily preventable, hospitals have developed protocols to lessen or extinguish the occurrence of these events. In addition, The Joint Commission (TJC) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have developed core measures to guide health care providers’ efforts in improving patient safety and the quality of care delivered.

Health care organizations have developed strategic agendas to help meet these standards and reduce the incidence of Never Events. Nurses significantly influence the overall quality of health care provided and play a pivotal role in improving patient outcomes.

For this Discussion, you will consider the standards that are in place for nurses and how they can be used to improve quality of care.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review the information at the Joint Commission and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services websites on the core measures and standards presented in this week’s Learning Resources.
  • Consider the nurse’s role in supporting the organization’s strategic agenda as it relates to improving clinical outcomes.
  • Conduct an Internet search for either a Never Event or a core measure, and select one to address in your post.
By Day 3

Respond to the following:

  • How has the emphasis on quality of care, patient safety, and clinical care outcomes been impacted by specific standards emanating from TJC and/or CMS? Cite your selected core measure or Never Event in your response.
  • What is the impact of the nurse’s role in clinical outcomes for the organization?
  • Discuss nurse-specific challenges in influencing change in quality improvement.
  • How does this influence the ability of the organization to achieve its strategic agenda?

Support your response with references from the professional nursing literature.

Note Initial Post: A 3-paragraph (at least 250–350 words) response. Be sure to use evidence from the readings and include in-text citations. Utilize essay-level writing practice and skills, including the use of transitional material and organizational frames. Avoid quotes; paraphrase to incorporate evidence into your own writing. A reference list is required. Use the most current evidence (usually ≤ 5 years old).

Read two or more of your colleagues’ postings from the Discussion question (support with evidence if indicated).

HEALTH CARE AGENCIES

Imagine you are a Program Manager or Technical Analyst, working for the World Health Organization (WHO) or Non-governmental Organization (NGO). You have been asked to put together a PowerPoint presentation  of 8-10 slides, not including title or reference slides, about what you learned at the recent World Health Summit. Each slide with content should also include 150-200 word Speaker Notes.  Be sure to include the following information in your presentation:

  • Explain your job duties.
  • Describe the history and development of the Global Health Data Exchange (GHDx), and explain why it was formed.
  • Include the types of services it provides around the world.
  • Explain how the WHO, GHDx, and the World Health Summit are involved in world health, including information about how new technology is provided for foreign countries.
  • Provide and describe the types of health care technology available in foreign countries. This can include low-income, middle-income, and high-income economies.
  • Select 5 of the best health care organizations in the world, and summarize the services they provide. Explain why these are considered the best health care organizations in the world.
  • In a table, outline significant differences among 4 nations offering the best health care as compared to those that provide low-quality health care.

Be sure to support your information by citing at least 2 scholarly references using APA format.

Online Learning Strategies

Online Learning Strategies:  Completing courses in the absence of a physical classroom and frequent face-to-face contact can be challenging, even for those who are comfortable with technology and the online environment. You need to be able to plan and manage your time well, particularly since there is no structured “class time”; communicate clearly and effectively where there is no visual or nonverbal feedback; and use technology effectively.

This Discussion provides you with an opportunity to think about your skills in the above areas, to explore strategies for successful online learning, and exchange strategies with your colleagues.

To prepare:

•Review this Week’s assigned readings from the Walden e-Guide and the document, “Technical Tips for Learning at Walden,” in the Learning Resources. •Review this week’s media program, “Tips for Effective Online Composition and Communication.”

•Think about some strategies you have used, or read about, that may be beneficial for effective planning, time management, communication, and technology use. •Consider how the strategies you have identified can contribute to being a successful online learner.

Post a description of at least one strategy for each of the following areas related to online success: planning, time management, communication, and technology use.

Explain how/why you think use of each strategy will contribute to your success as an online learner.  Support your Discussion assignment with specific resources used in its preparation using APA formatting. You are asked to provide a reference for all resources, including those in the Learning Resources for this course.

  3. Explain how the style and specific visual characteristics of each painting contributed to or reflected its overall content or meaning.
  4. Do these paintings have the same impact or meaning to audiences today? Why or why not?

Include details about the visual characteristics and content of each painting in your response. Provide proper citations for any information from outside sources included in your essay.

Dealing with Change Dynamics

Contemporary Organization Evaluation

Details:

In today’s fast-paced and global community, most organizations are faced with constant change. Research contemporary organizations that are currently responding to a significant change within the industry, such as disruptive technology; state, government, or industry regulations; environmental constraints; judicial or legislative rulings; etc.

Choose one organization from your research that has recently responded to major change or is currently responding to change. Write a paper (1,250-1,500 words) discussing how well the organization is responding to the change dynamics. Include the following:

1. Describe the organization and the change to which it is responding.

2. Discuss the degree to which the change has been disruptive and how the organization has responded to the dynamics created by this change.

3. Evaluate the strategies the organization used in its change plan and determine the level of success the organization experienced with the strategies.

4. Determine the effect the change had on stakeholders, and to what degree stakeholders have resisted. Assess how well stakeholder resistance was addressed.

5. Evaluate the overall implications the change had on interdepartmental collaboration.

6. In your opinion, how well did the leaders of the organization respond and prepare for the change? What worked and what did not work with the strategies they implemented?

7. What modifications would you suggest the leaders of the organization make in order to better address the change dynamics? What additional strategies would you recommend to assist the organization through this change?

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide.
