identify three ways the growing diversity of the health care workforce affects the management of a health care organization today?

Cultural Competency in Health Services

 Participate in the discussion by analyzing each response for completeness and accuracy and by suggesting specific additions or clarifications for improving the discussion question responses. Your comments should pose questions, further the discussion of the topic, reinforce a response, or add another dimension to the discussion. Always use constructive language.

Discussion Question 1: Cultural Competency in Health Services

The field of cultural competence has recently emerged as part of a strategy to reduce disparities in access to and quality of health care. Since this is an emerging field, efforts to define and implement the principles of cultural competence are still ongoing. Cultural competence in health care describes the ability of systems to provide care to patients with diverse values, beliefs and behaviors, including tailoring delivery to meet patients’ social, cultural, and linguistic needs.

Part I. Define cultural competency and describe its overall importance in the delivery of health services?

           Part II. Do you believe the healthcare delivery system is culturally sensitive in its delivery of services? Defend your position.

Discussion Question 2: Effects of Diversity on Health Services

Diversity often is used in the context of legal requirements as mandated by discrimination and harassment laws, and in the past has referred to “protected classes,” such as gender, race, color and religion. In fact, diversity encompasses all of the potential differences that affect how we interpret and behave, differences that are so commonly encountered that we might fail to understand their power. It is important to take a look at how diversity impacts a growing and changing healthcare industry.

Part I. Identify three ways the growing diversity of the health care workforce affects the management of a health care organization today?

           Part II. Discuss what management can do to enhance their own and their employees' awareness of the growing diversity of the community served?

provide strategies for individuals and communities to improve environmental health.

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:

SHOW LESS Assess basic environmental health principles, theories, and issues. Define the term environmental health. Assess how healthy cities relate to environmental health. Analyze obstacles for a city in becoming a healthy city. Describe the financial issues involved in creating a healthy city. Analyze how environmental health is an individual concern. Analyze how environmental health is a global concern. Apply personal and professional decisions based upon an understanding of environmental risks. Describe how a city could become prepared for disasters. Assess benefits of developing a healthy city to one’s self, family, and community. Communicate effectively in a variety of formats. The purpose of this assessment is to consider aspects of what makes a healthy city and to integrate your research to provide strategies for individuals and communities to improve environmental health.

To begin, suppose you are working with your city planner to develop a healthy city initiative for your city (or a city near you). You are tasked with developing a report that will be presented to your city council.

Craft a 4–5-page written document that could be presented to your city council, addressing the following points:

What is environmental health? Why is creating a healthy city important to environmental health? What could your city do to become a healthy city? What would be the obstacles to change, and why are they obstacles? What financial issues would have to be considered? How would these changes benefit you, your family, and your community? What could your city do to become better prepared for disasters, both natural and human-made? Why should environmental health be considered an individual concern? Why should it be considered a global concern? What could you or your family do—in your home, your neighborhood, and your workplace—to reduce your personal impact on the environmental health of your city?

To deepen your understanding, you are encouraged to consider the questions below and discuss them with a fellow learner, a work associate, an interested friend, or a member of the business community.

For the following questions about disaster preparation, refer to the “Make a Plan” and “Test Your Readiness Quotient” resources linked in the Resources under the Required Resources heading.

What kinds of disasters, both natural and man-made, are most likely to occur in your area? How would you be notified of an emergency situation in your community? How many of the Readiness Quotient Test questions would you be able to answer as “Yes”? What steps could you take to achieve 10 out of 10 “Yes” answers? What is your disaster plan? For the following questions about your personal impact on environmental health, consider the course as a whole.

Providing Total Eye Care to the Rural Population

Assignment: Marketing Health Care Services

Strategies used to market health care services are typically different than strategies used to market health care products. From intangibility to the natural inconsistencies in the delivery of services, traditional marketing strategies must be modified so that there is a greater focus on marketing relationships and quality care. Therefore, when developing marketing plans, it is important for organizations to consider the 5 I’s of marketing health services: inconsistency, inseparability, intangibility, interaction, and inventory. For this Assignment, use the 5 I’s to examine the health care service in the Aravind Eye Care System: Providing Total Eye Care to the Rural Population case study provided in the Learning Resources. Then provide recommendations for marketing the service.

To prepare:

  • Review the Aravind case study in the Learning Resources.
  • With the 5 I’s of marketing in mind, reflect on the health care service provided by the organization and its personnel.

The Assignment

In a 4- to 5-page paper, address the following:

  • Using the 5 I’s of marketing, analyze the health care service provided by the organization in the scenario.
    • Inconsistency: Is there consistency in the quality of care?
    • Inseparability: When providing the service, do providers demonstrate biases toward or against patients and their families (i.e., racial biases, age biases, gender biases, etc.)?
    • Intangibility: What are the intangible characteristics of providers (i.e., demeanor, posture, etc.)? How do providers behave toward patients?
    • Interaction with consumers: Is the organization patient-centered or physician-centered?
    • Inventory: How much time is spent on providing the service and how much time is spent on non-service-related activities?
  • Recommend strategies to market this service to health care consumers. Include how these strategies might improve operations.

Focus on how the theory was applied in practice and how this information may help guide you in the development of your public health campaign

Assignment: Applying Theory to Practice and Research

There are four common theories often used in public health. They are: the Theory of Reasoned Action, the Health Belief Model, the Theory of Planned Behavior, and the Trans-theoretical Stages of Change. While these are not the only theories used in public health, they are most often utilized in the field. As a future public health leader, it is imperative to have a firm understanding of these four widely used theories so you can understand what motivates and influences people to change their behavior or attitudes related to public health issues. For this Application Assignment, select one article for each theory or one article that discusses all of the theories and summarize the information. Focus on how the theory was applied in practice and how this information may help guide you in the development of your public health campaign (Prescription Drug Overdose)

Submit the assignment (4 pages not including title and reference page)

· Select one article on each of the following theories: Theory of Reasoned Action, Health Belief Model, Theory of Planned Behavior, and Trans-theoretical Stages of Change or select one article that discusses all of the theories;

· Summarize how each theory is applied to practice;

· Explain two strengths of each theory;

· Explain at least two limitations of each of the theories;

· Select one theory you would like to use in the development of your public health campaign (PRESCRIPTION DRUG OVERDOSE) and justify your selection.

Support your Application Assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation. You are to provide a reference list for all resources(MIN 4). Your written assignments must follow APA guidelines. Refer to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association to ensure your in-text citations and reference list are correct

Review the Week 3 Case Study (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. This case study focuses on a vulnerable young woman who is facing many risk factors.

  • Discuss several risk factors that may impact health outcomes for vulnerable populations.

Assurance is one of the three core functions of public health. Find a resource in your community (other than WIC) that could assist Mary during her pregnancy. Start by searching the Internet for your local health department's website. What services does it provide for pregnant women, those living in poverty, or those with mental health concerns? What about your local welfare office? Does it provide prenatal or mental health services? Are there any service organizations, crisis pregnancy centers, or churches providing help for pregnant women or those experiencing mental health concerns? (The Internet, your local newspaper, and the telephone book may also help you locate resources.)

  • Briefly describe the types of services that you found.
  • Choose one agency and assess this agency in terms of the 4 A's. Is it accessible, acceptable, affordable, or available for Mary or other pregnant women that you case manage?
  • Are there adequate resources for other vulnerable populations in your community?
