Clarifying Professional Values and Purpose

Clarifying Professional Values and Purpose

Strengths-Based Leadership

It is relatively easy to describe our acquired expertise, but most of us struggle when asked to describe our natural talents.
—Rath, 2007, p. 21

Recognizing innate talents is critical not only for leveraging one’s own strengths, but for fostering a workplace environment in which everyone’s contributions are respected and maximized. This is valuable because “the opportunity for individuals to play to their strengths most of the time is the key factor that shows the greatest correlation to outstanding performance in the widest range of business outcomes including profits, productivity, customer satisfaction, and safety and employee retention” (Buckingham, 2011, p. 5). Charged with the complex and considerable goal of promoting health care quality and safety, nurse leader-managers must learn how to draw upon each person’s strengths to foster collaboration toward this shared purpose.

In this Discussion, you assess your own strengths and consider how they can be applied in a health care organization to improve quality and safety.

To prepare:

  • Review the Learning Resources focusing on strengths-based leadership.
  • If you have not already done so, follow the instructions in Strengths Finder 2.0 to complete the online assessment and read the sections in Part II that are associated with your five top strengths.
  • Consider the results of the assessment. What insights, questions, or concerns arise as you think about these results?
  • Think about how your identified strengths relate to your current role as a leader-manager and to the professional contributions that you hope to make now and in the future. Give focused attention to patient safety and health care quality; how and why are your strengths valuable for promoting optimal patient outcomes and creating systems-level change? Clarifying Professional Values and Purpose
  • Evaluate strategies for applying your strengths in the health care workplace. Identify at least two that you can use to add value to a team or workgroup to improve quality and safety.

By Day 3

Post a brief description of your identified strengths and explain how and why they are beneficial in your role as a nurse leader-manager. Explain at least two strategies for applying your leadership strengths in a health care organization to improve quality and safety.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ responses.

Limitations in Providing Mental Health Care

I need it completed in 4 hours

There has been much recent discussion among nurse practitioners and other health professionals over the limitations in providing mental health care (diagnosis, therapy and medication) if you are not credentialed as a PMHNP. Please go to the Texas Board of Nursing and review implications for primary care NP’s who see patients experiencing mental health problems (many patients to be sure). A.

What are the needs for mental health services on a national and local level? How do believe your new role as a PMHNP may influence this? Do you feel the Board is too restrictive or appropriate in their position statement. Please post an initial posting with at least two references. If you are not located in Texas, you may apply this discussion topic to your state. After you have posted your initial posting by the third day of the module, respond substantively to at least two peers by the end of the module.

B.

Do some research about the different rules for PMHNP practice in different states. What are the pros and cons of having Full, Limited, and Restricted practice? What is the situation in your state? Please post an initial posting with at least two current references. After you have posted your initial posting by the third day of the module, respond substantively to at least two peers by the end of the module. Limitations in Providing Mental Health Care

ow health information technology supports evidence-based practice

Before the digital revolution, health information technology supplied very limited support for evidence-based practice. If nurses wanted to be informed about cutting-edge research, their best bet was to either subscribe to leading journals or make periodic trips to the library. With the establishment of research databases, however, nurses became empowered to learn about and facilitate interdisciplinary and translational research. Databases are just one example of how health information technology supports evidence-based practice. ow health information technology supports evidence-based practice.

To prepare:

· Read the following scenario from the text (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018, p. 506):

Twelve-hour shifts are problematic for patient and nurse safety, and yet hospitals continue to keep the 12-hour shift schedule. In 2004, the Institute of Medicine (Board on Health Care Services & Institute of Medicine, 2004) published a report that referred to studies as early as 1988 that discussed the negative effects of rotating shifts on intervention accuracy. Workers with 12-hour shifts realized more fatigue than workers on 8-hour shifts. In another study done in Turkey by Ilhan, Durukan, Aras, Turkcuoglu, and Aygun (2006), factors relating to increased risk for injury were age of 24 or less, less than 4 years of nursing experience, working in the surgical intensive care units, and working for more than 8 hours.

Workflow Analysis in Nursing Discussion

Workflow Analysis in Nursing Discussion

Workflow analysis aims to determine workflow patterns that maximize the effective use of resources and minimize activities that do not add value. There are a variety of tools that can be used to analyze the workflow of processes and clarify potential avenues for eliminating waste. Flowcharts are a basic and commonly used workflow analysis method that can help highlight areas in need of streamlining. Workflow Analysis in Nursing Discussion

In this Assignment, you select a common event that occurs regularly in your organization and create a flowchart representing the workflow. You analyze the process you have diagrammed and propose changes for improvement.

To prepare:

· Identify a common, simple event that frequently occurs in your organization that you would like to evaluate.

· Consider how you would design a flowchart to represent the current workflow.

· Consider what metrics you would use to determine the effectiveness of the current workflow and identify areas of waste.

To complete:

Write a 3- to 5-page paper which includes the following:

· Create a simple flowchart of the activity you selected. (Review the Sample Workflow of Answering a Telephone in an Office document found in this week’s Learning Resources for an example.)

· Next, in your paper:

o Explain the process you have diagrammed.

o For each step or decision point in the process, identify the following: Workflow Analysis in Nursing Discussion

§ Who does this step? (It can be several people.)

§ What technology is used?

§ What policies and rules are involved in determining how, when, why, or where the step is executed?

§ What information is needed for the execution of this step?

o Describe the metric that is currently used to measure the soundness of the workflow. Is it effective?

o Describe any areas where improvements could occur and propose changes that could bring about these improvements in the workflow.

o Summarize why it is important to be aware of the flow of an activity.

· Remember to include a cover page, introduction, and summary for your paper. Workflow Analysis in Nursing Discussion
