NURSE’S ROLE

One way informatics can be especially valuable is in capturing data to inspire improvements and quality change in practice. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) collects data related to adverse events and safety concerns. If you are working within a practice setting to implement a new electronic health record (EHR) system, this is just one of the many considerations your team would need to plan for during the rollout process. Details:

The first step of the EBP process is to develop a question from the nursing practice problem of interest.

Select a practice problem of interest to use as the focus of your research.

Start with the patient and identify the clinical problems or issues that arise from clinical care.

Following the PICOT format, write a PICOT statement in your selected practice problem area of interest, which is applicable to your proposed capstone project. PICO STATEMENT

The PICOT statement will provide a framework for your capstone project (the project students must complete during their final course in the RN-BSN program of study).

Conduct a literature search to locate research articles focused on your selected practice problem of interest. This literature search should include both quantitative and qualitative peer-reviewed research articles to support your practice problem.

Select six peer-reviewed research articles which will be utilized through the next 5 weeks as reference sources. Be sure that some of the articles use qualitative research and that some use quantitative research. Create a reference list in which the six articles are listed. Beneath each reference include the article’s abstract. The completed assignment should have a title page and a reference list with abstracts.

ETHICAL DILEMA

ETHICAL DILEMA

Deciding to place a loved one into a long-term care facility can be extremely difficult. Even more difficult is the thought of your loved one’s rights being violated while in long-term care. Patient healthcare rights are not as clearly defined as one would expect, and there are long-term care and other healthcare facilities that create their own sets of patient rights. However, there are also certain indisputable rights afforded to patients across the board.

Read the case study titled “A Legal and Ethical Dilemma”, located on pages 463-465 of your text. Next, use the Internet or Strayer Library to research information on a patient’s right to die. ETHICAL DILEMA

Write a four to six (4-6) page paper in which you:

  1. Describe the legal and ethical dilemma discussed in the case study. Analyze the key ways in which a patient’s right to die relates to this specific case.
  2. From your research, specify the potential repercussions for failure to comply with the wishes of a patient who has requested to withhold a life-sustaining procedure. Next, take a position on whether the patient’s right to die or the patient’s right to be protected from harm should take precedence in this case. Provide a rationale for your position.
  3. Imagine that you are a part of the ethics committee investigating this case. Determine the main facts pertaining to the issue that the committee should consider. Suggest one (1) step that the facility should take next in order to resolve the dilemma. Provide a rationale for your response.
  4. Use at least three (3) quality academic resources. Note: Wikipedia and other similar websites do not qualify as academic resources. ETHICAL DILEMA

EXPERIMENTAL AND NON-EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH

Per Study.com (2017), Experimental research is when a researcher can manipulate the predictor variable and subjects to identify a cause-and-effect relationship. This typically requires the research to be conducted in a lab, with one group being placed in an experimental group, or the ones being manipulated, while the other is placed in a placebo group, or inert condition or non-manipulated group. A laboratory-based experiment gives a high level of control and reliability.

Per Study.com (2017), Non-experimental research is the label given to a study when a researcher cannot control, manipulate or alter the predictor variable or subjects, but instead, relies on interpretation, observation or interactions to conclude. Typically, this means the non-experimental researcher must rely on correlations, surveys or case studies, and cannot demonstrate a true cause-and-effect relationship. Non-experimental research tends to have a high level of external validity, meaning it can be generalized to a larger population. EXPERIMENTAL AND NON-EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH

The four most commonly used designs for research studies are descriptive, correlational, quasi- experimental, and experimental.”(Grove, Gray & Burns, 2015). Descriptive and correlational designs can be referred to as non-experimental designs because the focus is on examining variables as they naturally occur in environments and not in the implementing of a treatment by the researcher. In experimental design researchers uses random assignment and they manipulate an independent variable around a controlled variable. A true experimental design there must be randomizing, a control group and manipulator of a variable when examining the direct cause or predicted relationships between variables. In a quasi-experiment one of these aspects is m issing, typically the random assignment of subjects to groups. (Sousa, Driessnack & Mendes, 2007). EXPERIMENTAL AND NON-EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH

EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH

The experimental research design is a framework system constructed to evaluate the interrelation of actions and reactions among absolute and conditional variables. (Grove, Gray, & Burns, 2015, p. 212).

A strong element of control is prevalent in experimental research design.  Researchers can maneuver and influence variables to coerce the desired effect. Pre-test post-test experiment design is one of the most common design studies used in medicine and nursing. This research design exhibits increased control over key elements to solidify the validity of the study. This design is where a selected group of subjects receive proposed treatment or therapy, and another group of subjects perceives they are also receiving treatment when they are receiving a placebo or conventional care. The researcher is examining the degree of impact the treatment/therapy has to the group of test subjects as apposed to the no treatment/therapy subjects.  EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH

Non-experimental research (also known as descriptive and correlational) design is a framework system constructed to evaluate naturally occurring variables not manipulated by a researcher and purposed to analyze and interpret the relationship between these variables. Non-experimental research does not include manipulation of the framework or variables. Observation of the interrelationship of variables with no manipulation, or control is evident in a non-experimental research.

Non-experimental research (descriptive or correlational) are used to observe and investigate a group of subjects with similar characteristics to understand, research and study commonality for possible future experimental research.

According to Grove, Gray, and Burns 2015, “descriptive design may be used to develop theories, identify problems with current practice, make judgments about practice, or identify trends of illnesses, illness prevention, and health promotion in selected groups” (Grove, Gray, & Burns, 2015, p. 213). EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH

Experimental research design exhibits strict control and manipulation over variables and environment whereas non-experimental research design lacks control and manipulation of variables and is strictly observing variables in their natural occurrence.

HIV/AIDS

HIV/AIDS

Part I: HIV/AIDS has affected millions of people in the United States and the world since the 1980s. On a global scale, large numbers of people with HIV/AIDS are not receiving the needed treatment. Congress created The Ryan White Care Act of 1990 to assist public hospitals struggling financially from caring for uninsured men and women living with HIV/AIDS. There were four Titles written into The Ryan White Care Act of 1990. In recent years the Titles have moved into five Parts, Part A-F focusing on a variety of topics.

In 2014, the Affordable Care Act gave insurance access to many of the uninsured population. Over the past few decades, countries like England and Canada have a lower percentage of HIV/AIDS cases. Is this due to their healthcare structure? In 4-5 pages, discuss the following.HIV/AIDS

WEIGHING DATA EVIDENCE

WEIGHING DATA EVIDENCE

When conducting original research, the final step researchers must complete is weighing the evidence and interpreting the meanings of their data, statistics, and analyses. This is the culmination of the research process in which all of the research methods and designs can be synthesized into a meaningful conclusion. In this stage, researchers should formulate explanations for what their data indicates, determine whether the data answers their initial research question, identify areas of uncertainty, and consider directions for further research. WEIGHING DATA EVIDENCE

In this Discussion, you focus on one of the research articles that you identified for Part 2 of the Course Project (Literature Review). You then explore the process of how the researchers generated conclusions based on their data, consider other possible interpretations of their data, and formulate ideas for further research.

To prepare:

  • Review this week’s Learning Resources, focusing on how researchers find meaning in their data and generate sound conclusions. Pay particular attention to Table 2 in the article, “Study Design in Medical Research.”
  • Revisit the 5 articles that you identified in Part 2 of the Course Project. Select one to consider for the purpose of this Discussion.
  • Read sections of the chosen article where the data is presented, analyzed, and interpreted for meaning. What reasoning process did the researchers use to formulate their conclusions? What explanation did they give to support their conclusions? Were there any weaknesses in their analysis or conclusions?
  • Consider possible alternate conclusions that the researchers could have drawn based on their data.
  • Examine the findings that the article presents and consider how well they addressed the researcher’s initial question(s). What additional research could be done to build on these findings and gain a fuller understanding of the question?

By Day 3

Post an APA citation and brief summary of the research article that you selected. Describe the data and the results of any statistical tests or analyses presented in the article. Explain how the researchers formulated their conclusion, any weaknesses in their analysis or conclusions, and offer at least one alternate interpretation of their data. Propose at least one additional research study that could be done to further investigate this research topic.
