How a nurse leader–manager may use just culture as a framework to create or maintain a focus on accountability and outcomes throughout a group

  • Review the information on just culture presented in the Learning Resources.
  • For this discussion, you will use the Regulatory Decision Pathway found in Russell, K. A. & Radtke, B. K. (2014).
  • Examine an adverse event at the unit level in your organization or one with which you are familiar and apply the Regulatory Decision Pathway.
  • Compare the findings of the Regulatory Decision Pathway  to what actually happened at the unit in your organization. Was the event deemed: bad intent, reckless, at risk, or human error? According to the pathway, do you now think it was the correct action?
  • Think about how a nurse leader–manager may use just culture as a framework to create or maintain a focus on accountability and outcomes throughout a group. What actions could be taken if a systems–related error was made or if an error resulted from risky behavior?
  • How might role conflict and/or ambiguity have contributed to the situation?

By Day 3

Post a description of an adverse event in your organization and your analysis of the issue using the Regulatory Decision Pathway. Explain how role conflict or ambiguity might have influenced this situation. Apply the principles of just culture as you explain how you, as the group’s manager, would handle the situation.

The importance of self-assessment and reflection

Details:

This assignment focuses on the importance of self-assessment and reflection.

Self-Assessment

Self-awareness is essential for developing leadership skills. Recognizing your own strengths, weaknesses, and values, and understanding emotional intelligence and learning styles can help you to be a more effective nurse leader.

For this assignment, you have the opportunity to take a variety of self-assessments to learn more about yourself and identify your assets and weaknesses as a leader. This will assist you in discovering how you can improve your own self-leadership skills. You will be asked to think critically about your results and submit a reflection as directed below.

Complete each of the following self-assessments. Be sure to document the results of each assessment to assist you in completing the reflection portion of the assignment below.

  1. Emotional Intelligence Assessment: “Emotional Intelligence Test”: http://testyourself.psychtests.com/testid/3038
  2. Personality Assessment: “Personality Traits Test”: http://testyourself.psychtests.com/bin/transfer?req=MnwyMjk2fDE5NTM1MTV8MXwxfDE=&refempt
  3. Learning Styles Assessment: “The VARK Questionnaire: How Do I Learn Best?”: http://vark-learn.com/the-vark-questionnaire/
  4. Values Assessment: “Values Profile”: http://testyourself.psychtests.com/bin/transfer?req=MnwzMzE5fDE5NTM1MTV8MXwxfDE=&refempt
  5. Values Assessment: “Rokeach Values Survey”: http://faculty.wwu.edu/tyrank/Rokeach%20Value%20Survey.pdf
  6. Diversity Assessment: “Cultural Competence Self-Test”: http://www.healthystartpinellas.org/pdf/Self_Assess_5.pdf

Self-Assessment Reflection

Becoming self-aware is an ongoing process requiring introspection. The more often people practice self-reflection, the more opportunities they have to understand their own behaviors and adapt their approaches to working with other people, which can improve both your own and other’s abilities to meet their professional goals.

In a 750-1,000 word reflective essay, address the following:

  1. Briefly summarize the results of each self-assessment.
  2. Identify the leadership style that closely aligns to your philosophy of care, and explain what appeals to you about that style.
  3. Reflect on how you might incorporate elements of that particular style as you exercise leadership in a practice or health care organization setting.
  4. Discuss any particular areas for improvement the assessments helped you identify and some steps for improving your leadership capabilities.

You are required to cite three to five sources to complete this assignment. Sources must be published within the last 5 years and appropriate for the assignment criteria and nursing content.

Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) with bilateral iliac stents

As with your prior weekly posts, you need to organize your responses under the heading of each question. Please carefully read the questions and fully answer all aspects of each question.

Fred is an 83-year-old male who is being admitted to the medical-surgical unit status post fall. He is alert and oriented and reports that while visiting a local casino with his wife Margaret earlier this evening, he tripped over a curb and fell landing on his right side. After receiving morphine in the emergency room prior to transfer to your unit, Fred is rating his pain at 6/10. He has multiple bruises from his jawbone to his knee as well as a slight rotation of his right leg.

Past medical history includes: myocardial infarction (MI) x 2, peripheral vascular disease (PVD) with bilateral iliac stents, non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), sleep apnea, and degenerative joint disease.

Medications include: aspirin, Plavix, Lopressor, Lisinopril, and Metformin.

After reviewing the above scenario please answer the following questions.

  1. Based on the information provided, how will you prioritize your care, what assessments will you include and in what order? Please provide rationale for your response.
  2. Considering this patient’s age, injury, past medical history, and list of current medications, what, if any, concerns do you have related to his potential need for surgery?
  3. Should surgery to repair his right femur be required; what type of clearance and pre-op orders would you anticipate receiving related to his diet, meds, lab work, and so on?

Risk management strategies used in the organization's infection control program

Select a health care organization in your community to conduct an interview with an appropriate risk management employee. The organization can be your current employer, or a different health care facility in your community. Acute care, urgent care, large multi-provider private medical clinics, assisted living facilities, and community/public health clinical facilities are all ideal options to complete the requirements of this assignment. Make sure to select an individual who can provide sufficient information regarding how that organization manages risk within its facility to answer the questions below.

In your interview, address the following:

  1. Identification of the challenges the organization faces in controlling infectious diseases.
  2. Risk management strategies used in the organization’s infection control program, along with specific examples.
  3. How the facility’s educational risk management program addresses key professional issues, such as prevention of negligence, malpractice litigation, and vicarious liability.
  4. Policies the facility has implemented that address managing emergency triage in high-risk areas of health care service delivery.
  5. Strategies the facility utilizes to monitor and maintain its risk management program.

Post-interview, compose a 750-1,000 word summary analysis of the interview to include the questions above as well as the following elements:

  1. A brief assessment of the organization’s risk management program, including what works well and what could work better (the pros and cons).
  2. Action steps you would take to improve the program. Select one area and provide your rationale and possible steps required to implement your suggestion.

Cite appropriate references as needed to support your statements and rationale.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

Treatment and recommendations would be appropriate for chronic bronchitis

Review the following case study and complete the questions that follow. For this assignment, write your responses to each question as one narrative rather than separating your responses by question number. Include an introduction and a conclusion. Submit your answers using APA format, well-written sentences, and detailed explanations. Your analysis must be scientifically sound, necessary, and sufficient.

You must also include a bibliography of at least 3 sources (with at least one non Internet source). Your textbook may not be included as a source for this assignment. Refer to the rubric for more information on how your assignment will be graded.

The scope of the problem using both anecdotal and evidentiary information

Current Topics in Nursing Informatics

Each student in this course possesses a unique background and skill set. Drawing from your own career and experiences, identify a current information-technology-related problem or opportunity for improvement.

  • Explain the scope of the problem using both anecdotal and evidentiary information to “build your case”
  • Once you have identified and explained the problem, propose a solution or series of steps to be taken in order to improve the situation
  • Your recommendations for improvement may include design and utilization of new technology or perhaps upgrades to that which already exists
  • Be creative in your approach
  • Explain how the changes will benefit nursing and improve patient outcomes
  • Topics for discussion may include (but are not limited to): legal ramifications of information technology/systems, ethical considerations in information technology, redundancy in documentation, ease of use and navigation in chosen operating system, or the use of data to improve health outcomes
  • Approach this assignment as though you are the advanced-practice informatics nurse responsible for convincing others that a change is needed and then moving forward with planning, implementation, and evaluation of the project

Use language that reflects the proper use of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and word choice. Make sure the paper is well organized, using headings throughout to guide the reader.

Rather have a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist or an Anesthesia Assistant do their anesthesia for surgery debate

250 words 1 reference (from link provided) MUST HAVE IN-TEXT CITATIONS THAT MATCH REFERENCE

In response to DBP # 3 (VA Rule), one of your colleagues posted, “…the authors of the articles are using scare tactics, instead of evidence, …to sway public opinion. A few weeks ago, there was a Facebook post by the ASA circulating that used the same tactics. I opened and read the comments from the public. It was sad how misinformed they [are]. Many of the comments [described] CRNAs [as] inferior and providing poor care. In order to combat this [attitude], I believe the CRNA associations need to start writing and circulating the research articles to prove otherwise.”

Additionally, a CRNA recently posted the following on the AANA’s Connect All Member Community: “…I asked four well-educated, non-medical people at a dinner party, if they would rather have a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist or an Anesthesia Assistant do their anesthesia for surgery. After a few minutes of debate, they decided the Anesthesia Assistant works directly with the Anesthesiologist, so he/she probably knows more than the Nurse…”
