Examining rhetorical strategies for placing yourself in the scholarly conversation

Reflecting on Your Writing: Instructor Feedback

As a scholar and part of the intellectual community, you will want to understand ways to integrate feedback to be able to join a larger conversation. A significant part of scholarly writing is revising based on your colleagues’ feedback, and now that you have a substantial amount of writing; it is time to reflect on the ways you have incorporated your Instructor’s feedback.

This week’s Learning Resources will help you examine rhetorical strategies for placing yourself in the scholarly conversation, such as using the personal pronoun, “I.” For this Discussion, you will reflect on how your voice fits into the scholarly conversation—beginning with the conversation between your Instructor and yourself. This initial Discussion is part of a continual conversation during the remainder of this course as your Instructor and yourself revise, review, and reflect on your writing.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review      the Learning Resources on audience and sentence structure.
  • Reflect      on your ways you have incorporated your Instructor’s feedback and your      part in the scholarly conversation. You may even choose to consider how      you approached this specific Assignment in relation to scholarly voice and      transitions.

By Tuesday 12/26/2017, in APA format with at least one reference,

Post a 1- to 2-paragraph reflection on your use of your Instructor’s feedback throughout the past few weeks of this course and your participation in the scholarly conversation. (Note: You may choose to reflect specifically on how you will apply scholarly voice concepts in this week’s Assignment.)

Assignment: Adding Your Evaluation

Assignment: Adding Your Evaluation

How does your voice fit in the scholarly conversation? How can you revise and align your opinions to participate with the intellectual discussion of your fellow scholar-practitioners?

For this Assignment, you will review the Learning Resources on sentence structure and audience. With the principles outlined in the Learning Resources in mind, it is time to join the conversation by adding your own evaluation of the three paragraphs you have written from the journal article you selected in Week 2.

To prepare for this Assignment:

  • Review      the Learning Resources on audience, sentence structure, and, if necessary,      the MEAL plan from Week 4.
  • Review      the content of your selected journal article.

The Assignment:

Revise the three paragraphs from the Week 4 Assignment, adding your own evaluation of the article’s main points. In the MEAL plan, this portion is referred to as the A section, or analysis, and is often the most difficult portion to include.

Add 1–2 sentences to each paragraph, detailing your analysis of each main point.

Demonstrating leadership and assist new nurses to adapt to the work environment

You have been working on a busy orthopedic unit for 6 months. The average patient length of stay in the unit is 4 to 7 days. The program from which you have graduated has subsequently graduated a new class, and three of the new graduates are coming to work on your unit. The nurse manager has told you that she is counting on you to demonstrate leadership and assist these new nurses to adapt to the work environment Based on the behaviors of an effective leader found in this chapter, how will you assist your new colleagues?

The six-step coaching process to develop a coaching and development plan

Coaching Employees

Consider the following scenario:

You were very pleased with your decision to select Mala during your last recruitment initiative. Just out of college, Mala has the enthusiasm and professional drive that could benefit your health care organization. However, you recognize that Mala will have a lot to learn in a clinical setting. As a nurse manager, you have led many successful group trainings, but have far less experience coaching employees one-on-one. You wonder how you should approach this relationship and what steps you should take to increase the positivity and effectiveness of this experience.

Coaching is an ongoing process that is an integral function of the management role. It focuses on the development needs of the employee and is built on a relationship of trust between the leader and follower. Coaching is a powerful activity that demonstrates value of and respect for the employee. In this Assignment, you examine how you could serve as a coach to facilitate an individual’s professional development.

To prepare

  • Reflect on the information shared in the article, “Coaching Nurses: A Real Example of a Real Difference.” Which of these best practices might you use to strengthen your own coaching skills?
  • Review Chapter 7, “Coaching and Developing Others” in the course text, From Management to Leadership: Strategies for Transforming Health Care. Consider how the author compares coaching staff in a health care setting to coaching athletes, directing a movie, and conducting a symphony. Then, examine the six steps of the coaching process. How does each of the coaching steps build upon one another to create a positive and effective coaching experience?
  • In preparation for this hypothetical coaching exercise, identify one individual, staff member, or employee (from your current organization or a past setting) who could benefit from coaching. Create a pseudonym for him or her.
  • Use the six-step coaching process to develop a coaching and development plan.

A self–assessment of your current sense of power within your organization and the profession

  • Reflect on your personal current sense of power within your organization and the profession;
  • Do a self–assessment of your leadership skills by doing the How Good are your Leadership Skills? assessment at http://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newLDR_50.htm
    • How did you score? You do need not to reveal this in your paper, but hopefully it will guide you in how to apply the concepts to your own situation.
  • Reflect on your motivation for increasing your power within your organization and/or within the nursing profession.
  • Do a self–assessment of your leadership motivation by doing the assessment The Leadership Motivation Assessment found at http://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newLDR_01.htm
    • Again, it is not necessary to post your score but hopefully it will guide you in how to discuss your motivation at this point in time.
  • Review the information on power in the Learning Resources and conduct additional research on your own to examine strategies that seem relevant and worthwhile for helping to enrich your power as a nurse leader.
  • Identify specific strategies you can use to develop and leverage sources and types of power to achieve desired outcomes.

To Complete

Write a 2– to 3–page paper, not including the cover and Reference page, describing:

  • A self–assessment of your current sense of power within your organization and the profession;
  • A self–assessment of your motivation for increasing your power base;
  • Write a detailed plan for enhancing your power as a nurse and a leader–manager, including specific strategies for achieving that plan.  Be sure to include strategies for mobilizing the power of nursing for social change, empowering others, and building a personal power base.

The Impact of Intrinsic Motivation

Assignment: The Impact of Intrinsic Motivation

Reflect for a moment on your nursing career. About what are you most passionate? When do you feel you are at your best? What brings you the greatest satisfaction in your work? Positive feelings in the workplace are usually fueled by intrinsic motivators: healthy relationships, meaningful purpose, competence, choice, and progress. As a nurse manager, it is helpful to recognize what motivates you to perform well in your own job. You should also take time to understand the motivations of employees. By speaking to staff about their interests and professional goals, nurse managers can build relationships and thus provide appropriate motivators.

For this Assignment, you examine your personal work experiences to determine which of the five intrinsic motivators are more influential in shaping your positive feelings about the workplace.

To prepare

  • Reflect on your work history, from your first job to your current employment.
  • Select one time period or situation in which you felt professionally happy, motivated, and fulfilled in your job. What do you remember most about this time period? What are, or were, the various personal and professional factors that helped to shape these feelings?
  • Select one time period or situation in which you felt professionally unhappy, disengaged, and unfulfilled in your job. What do you remember most about this time period? What are, or were, the various personal and professional factors that caused these feelings?
  • Review the selected pages from Chapter 7, “Coaching and Developing Others” in the course text, From Management to Leadership: Strategies for Transforming Health Care. Consider the potential influence of the five intrinsic motivators during your chosen time period or situation.
    • Which intrinsic motivators seem to resonate more with your own perceptions of job fulfillment?
    • Which motivators do you believe have greater influence on your professional well-being?
  • Review the media, “Fostering a Positive Workplace.” How can nurse leaders use their awareness of the five motivators to engage and retain nursing staff?

To complete

By Day 7 of Week 8

Submit a 3- to 5-page paper in which you do the following:

  • Appraise a time when you have felt professionally fulfilled. Describe the setting, your job title, and the roles and responsibilities in which you were engaged. Identify your own key intrinsic motivators and explain how these were evident in this situation. Cite specific examples.
  • Appraise a time when you have felt professionally unfulfilled. Describe the setting, your job title, and the roles and responsibilities in which you were engaged. Explain the motivator(s) that were absent and how this impacted your professional performance. Cite specific examples.
  • Discuss how you, as a nurse manager, might implement organization- or department-wide changes that would create an environment that engages staff through one or more intrinsic motivators.
