How these measurement systems and measurement methods impact organizational goal setting in the areas of overall performance and financial stability

The process of constructing a balanced scorecard for either financial goal setting or tracking of patient and employee satisfaction can be controversial. For example, a hospital’s financial scorecard provides a snapshot of gathered data for the hospital, but the data may be out of context, which makes it difficult to identify specific problems. It is evident that both scorecards and dashboards have a place in the health care setting; however, will all organizations and accrediting bodies agree on the aspects of implementation, data analysis, and levels of effectiveness?

To prepare:

  • Consider      the various uses of scorecards and dashboards presented in this week’s      Learning Resources and media presentation.
  • Reflect      on how these measurement systems and measurement methods impact      organizational goal setting in the areas of overall performance and      financial stability.
  • Explore      the key indicators involved with scorecards and dashboards as well as the      external quality standards to which they are compared.
  • Ask      yourself: What do the metrics used in the balanced scorecard and dashboard      mean to my organization and nursing practice? Has my organization      established goals for these metrics and are they currently being met?

By tomorrow Tuesday 12/19/17 12 pm, write a minimum of 550 words essay in APA format with 2 references from the list of required readings below. Include the level one as numbered below:

post a cohesive scholarly response that addresses the following:

1) Select any setting (Hospital) and describe the extent to which the patient’s experience of care is measured, tracked, and set for improvement goals.

2) Evaluate whether goals at your organization are established for these metrics and whether or not they are currently being met.

3) Describe some of the provocative issues that have or will emerge. For example, what has been the impact of CAHPS or HCAHPS in the setting described (if applicable).

Reflecting on Your Writing: Instructor Feedback

As a scholar and part of the intellectual community, you will want to understand ways to integrate feedback to be able to join a larger conversation. A significant part of scholarly writing is revising based on your colleagues’ feedback, and now that you have a substantial amount of writing; it is time to reflect on the ways you have incorporated your Instructor’s feedback.

This week’s Learning Resources will help you examine rhetorical strategies for placing yourself in the scholarly conversation, such as using the personal pronoun, “I.” For this Discussion, you will reflect on how your voice fits into the scholarly conversation—beginning with the conversation between your Instructor and yourself. This initial Discussion is part of a continual conversation during the remainder of this course as your Instructor and yourself revise, review, and reflect on your writing.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review      the Learning Resources on audience and sentence structure.
  • Reflect      on your ways you have incorporated your Instructor’s feedback and your      part in the scholarly conversation. You may even choose to consider how      you approached this specific Assignment in relation to scholarly voice and      transitions.

By Tuesday 12/26/2017, in APA format with at least one reference,

Post a 1- to 2-paragraph reflection on your use of your Instructor’s feedback throughout the past few weeks of this course and your participation in the scholarly conversation. (Note: You may choose to reflect specifically on how you will apply scholarly voice concepts in this week’s Assignment.)

The Maria story The case study

Maria is a 35 year old insulin dependent diabetic who currently takes good care of herself. She didn’t take good care of herself as a teenager. She is on an insulin pump to try to control her blood sugar, but has recently passed out in public several times.

What conditions causes her to pass out (hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia)

Why does this condition develop

What are the treatments for early stages of this condition

Given that she has been a diabetic for so long, why doesn’t Maria realize she is in trouble before she pass out

The impact of the mobilization effort on hospital staffing and care patterns

Overview

Create an 8–10-slide mobilization plan PowerPoint presentation (with detailed speaker’s notes) for a mobilization plan by your health care organization to commit 20 nurses to participate in a 4-month-long multinational effort to treat patients exposed to a highly contagious virus in a hot zone in Africa.

Nursing leaders must incorporate approaches that are inclusive and respectful of all stakeholders in the health care workforce, patient population, and the larger community that is served by the organization. Communication among members of teams, between departments and service lines, within large networks, with strategic business partners, and with patients, families, or support persons requires awareness of various facets of effective communication and cultural competence. A mobilization plan for an international medical mission requires careful planning of organizational structure roles, power distribution, and team member empowerment.

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:

· Competency 1: Identify nursing leadership priorities using a systems perspective.

. Identify the major stakeholders within the health care system that would be affected by the mobilization plan.

· Competency 2: Apply systems theory and systems thinking to facilitate health care delivery and patient outcomes.

. Apply systems thinking to determine the impact of the mobilization effort on hospital staffing and care patterns.

. Identify key actions needed to assure quality of care and safety for mission patients and personnel.

· Competency 3: Analyze the role of multiculturalism and diversity in organizational and systems structure and leadership.

. Examine potential multicultural and diversity issues that mission personnel may encounter.

· Competency 4: Evaluate how power relates to health care organizational structure, behavior, and leadership.

. Describe the medical mission team’s organizational structure and how power is distributed.

. Assess how the organizational structure empowers team members.

. Evaluate potential power issues that may arise when dealing with a multinational contingent.

· Competency 5: Communicate in a manner that is consistent with the expectations of a nursing professional.

. Write content clearly and logically, with correct use of grammar, punctuation, and mechanics.

. Correctly format citations and references using current APA style.

Context

Power

Leadership is often referred to as a power relationship and to be in a leadership role is to have some degree of power (Grossman & Valiga, 2013). The power that comes as a natural part of being a leader can be used most effectively not by control; but by influencing the direction of a group and the accomplishment of a vision. Power does not come just from having a position of authority; but also from having self-confidence, knowledge, a sense of purpose, and commitment to an ideal. Good communication skills, flexibility, a willingness to collaborate with others, as well as being open to other ideas and risks are sources of power. Leaders empower others by sharing the vision and inspiring commitment to a project or mission.

Assessment Instructions:

Preparation

Use the Capella library and the Internet to help you complete this assessment. For help using PowerPoint, refer to the Microsoft Tutorials and other resources located in the Suggested Resources and left navigation menu of the courseroom.

This assessment is based upon the scenario below. The scenario is very limited in detail; where more detail is needed, incorporate any assumptions you make to flesh out the scenario. It is intended to assess your ability to communicate your approach to a challenge by evaluating issues of organization, leadership, safety, quality improvement, multiculturalism and diversity.

Your approach should be very conceptual and high-level.

Scenario

Your health care organization has recently committed 20 nurses to participate in a 4-month-long multinational effort to treat patients exposed to a highly contagious virus in a “hot zone” in Africa. The director of your organization has asked you, because of your previous medical mission experience, to outline nursing-related plans for preparing for the mobilization and present this information at an upcoming staff meeting.

Deliverable: Mobilization Plan PowerPoint Presentation

Create an 8–10-slide PowerPoint presentation (with detailed speaker’s notes) of your mobilization plan. It should be targeted toward members of the hospital’s administrative staff, nurses, and the physicians who will also participate in this medical mission.

· Use bullet points and phrases on the slides.

· The narrative, or explanation for each slide, should be in the speaker’s notes section.

The mobilization plan should address the following:

· Identify the major stakeholders within the health care system that would be affected by the mobilization plan.

· Analyze how the mobilization effort will impact staffing patterns and nursing care at the hospital.

· Describe the medical mission team’s organizational structure of the mission team and how power is distributed.

. Include one slide of an organizational diagram for the mission.

. Describe the roles (in the speaker’s notes).

· Assess how the organizational structure empowers team members.

· Provide 1–2 examples of how team members will have power.

· Identify key actions needed to assure quality of care and safety for mission patients and personnel.

· Evaluate potential power issues that may arise when dealing with a multinational contingent.

· (Be generic; that is, do not address individual nationalities, races, et cetera.)

· Consider interactions with health care personnel from other countries.

· Examine potential multicultural and diversity issues that mission personnel may encounter.

· Consider that the indigenous population may be hostile to treatment.

· Outline possible training requirements to improve cultural competencies of the personnel.

Additional Requirements

· Written communication: Written communication should be free of errors that detract from the overall message.

· APA formatting: Resources and in-text citations should be formatted according to current APA style and formatting.

· Length: Presentation should be 8–10 slides. Include speaker’s notes on each content slide.

· References: Include a minimum of three peer-reviewed resources on the final slide (in APA format).

· General formatting: Choose an appropriate theme if using a template.

Application of evidence-based practice models as a strategy to improve patient safety and other quality dimensions

This week builds on that foundational awareness with a focus on the application of evidence-based practice models as a strategy to improve patient safety and other quality dimensions. In this Discussion, consider how these strategies can sustain practice changes.

To prepare:

Read: Newhouse, R.P. (2007) Diffusing confusion among evidence-based practice, quality improvement and research. JONA 37,432-535 (see attached pdf)

Read: Mazurek Melynk B., Gallagher-Ford, L., English Long, L., & Fineout-Overholt, E. (2014) The establishment of Evidence-Based practice competencies for practicing registered nurses and advanced practice nurses in real world clinical settings: proficiencies to improve healthcare quality, reliability, patient outcomes, and costs. Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing 11(1),5-15. (see attached pdf)

We all agree that research is the highest form of reliable evidence, when implemented in an organization that provides the basis for an evidence based practice. FIND a research study published in a peer reviewed journal related to a clinical practice problem that is of interest to you, and which would ultimately contribute to an evidence based practice (See “TeamSTEPPS Improves Operating Room Efficiency and Patient Safety” attached article).

The discussion assignment:

ANSWER the following discussion questions. Include the research study in your post (attach it to the post and post it in doc sharing). See page 11 #15 in Mazurek Melynk, Gallagher Ford, English Long and Fineout-Overholt. In this assignment, you are being asked to critically appraise a single research study for its relevance to a QI practice problem.

Discussion questions:

1) Briefly summarize study findings, conclusions and recommendations. Do you agree with these?

2) As a DNP prepared nurse, would you recommend a change in nursing practice based on the study? Defend and/or justify your decision based on research evaluation principles. In other words, does the evidence generated by this research article signify a need to change nursing practice? If not, why not; if so, why?

The model of nursing care

NR 447 Paper Direction

Directions

Read your text, Finkelman (2016), pp- 111-116 (see attached word doc).

Observe staff in delivery of nursing care provided. Practice settings may vary depending on availability.

Identify the model of nursing care that you observed (see different models in attached word document and select one). Be specific about what you observed, who was doing what, when, how and what led you to identify the particular model.

Write a 5-7-page paper that includes the following:

1) Write an introduction ending with a purpose statement (e.g. the purpose of this paper is…)

2) Review and summarize two scholarly resources (not including your text) related to the nursing care model you observed in the practice setting.

3) Review and summarize two scholarly resources (not including your text) related to a nursing care model that is different from the one you observed in the practice setting.

4) Discuss your observations about how the current nursing care model is being implemented. Be specific.

5) Recommend a different nursing care model that could be implemented to improve quality of nursing care, safety and staff satisfaction. Be specific.

6) Provide a summary/conclusion about this experience/assignment and what you learned about nursing care models.

Write your paper using APA format using Microsoft Office 2010 or later.

Submit this paper no later than 5 p.m. on Sunday February 4, 2018.

Effective Approaches in Nursing Leadership and Management

Effective Approaches in Leadership and Managment

In this assignment, you will be writing a 1,000-1,250-word essay describing the differing approaches of nursing leaders and managers to issues in practice. To complete this assignment, do the following:

1. Select an issue from the following list: nursing shortage and nurse turn-over, nurse staffing ratios, unit closures and restructuring, use of contract employees (i.e., registry and travel nurses), continuous quality improvement and patient satisfaction, and magnet designation.

2. Compare and contrast how you would expect nursing leaders and managers to approach your selected issue. Support your rationale by using the theories, principles, skills, and roles of the leader versus manager described in your readings.

3. Identify the approach that best fits your personal and professional philosophy of nursing and explain why the approach is suited to your personal leadership style.

4. Identify a possible funding source that addresses your issue. Consider looking at federal, state, and local organizations. For example: There are many grants available through the CDC, HRSA, etc.

5. Use at least two references other than your text and those provided in the course.

Prepare this assignment according to the APA guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

You are required to submit this assignment to Turnitin with a percentage less than 20 percent similarity.

The key concepts of risk, risk assessment, risk management, and risk communication

Background and Reference Material

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) sets standards for the United States, and especially for the Federal government. The Federal Information Security Management Act of 2002 (“FISMA”) required risk-based management of security for Federal information systems. NIST produced a Guide for Conducting Risk Assessmentsin 2002 that was revised in 2012.

You will find the revised guide here: http://nvlpubs.nist.gov/nistpubs/Legacy/SP/nistspecialpublication800-30r1.pdf

Although the PDF document is about 100 pages, there are only 38 pages in the guide proper. You will need to review at least a few of the appendices for this assignment in addition to reading the Guide.

You can find more background material with Google and especially Good Scholar. Please note that you can set a date range with Google Scholar, and so get only material published after the rule changes were announced. Try to find at least one publication that is a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
