Nursing Leadership And Management – Questions

1. Try taking a different route to class the next time it meets. Before you do this, think about how many changes, large and small, you will have to make to do this.  a- Will you have to leave earlier to be in class on time?

b- Will you meet different people on your way to class?

c- See different sights?

d- Would you change your route to class on the day of the final exam?

e- Why or why not? Summarize the positives and negatives of this small change. Relate your responses to this change to the way staff nurses feel when an administrator makes what he or she thinks is a “minor” change.

2. Think about a change that has occurred in your life. Some examples may be a change of role, a move, a marriage, a birth, a divorce, or a death.

a- How did you react to the change?

b- Would you have reacted differently if you had had more information?

c- Using Lewin’s model, describe the basic elements in the situation and how you eventually achieved a comfortable outcome.

Management and leadership competencies and how development of these competencies could be evidenced in a professional practice portfolio

Assessment 1

Written Assignment :

Developing a Professional Practice Portfolio TASK RATIONALE / AIM: According to the Registered Nurse Standards for Practice (2017), to provide safe, effective

nursing care, nurses must maintain capability for practice through lifelong learning and

professional development (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia [NMBA], 2017). This assessment is designed to provide you with the understanding and skills required to

develop a professional practice portfolio which can evidence your capability for practice as a

Registered Nurse. TASK INSTRUCTIONS: This task comprises three components. 1. Professional practice portfolio use Professional practice portfolios are asserted to be beneficial to demonstrate the capability for professional nursing practice. • Describe a professional practice portfolio and the recommended components. • Present a written argument for the use of a professional practice portfolio to

demonstrate professional nursing practice. This argument should demonstrate critical

thinking and analysis of the issues; include why portfolios should be used and a

discussion of the benefits and challenges of using a professional practice portfolio to

demonstrate capability for professional nursing practice. • Discuss and differentiate between management and leadership competencies and

describe how development of these competencies could be evidenced in a professional

practice portfolio. • Support your argument with at least seven scholarly sources from 2011 onwards. Page 1

2. Professional standards Standard 3 “Maintains the capability for practice” (NBMA, 2016) includes seven points.

The fourth point states the Registered Nurse (RN) “accepts accountability for decisions,

actions, behaviours and responsibilities inherent in their role” (NMBA, 2016).

• Chose a situation from your clinical placement where you were delegated an action or

responsibility by your RN clinical practice partner or clinical facilitator and describe

this situation. Your description should include five key elements; context of nursing

practice and health care delivery (where this occurred), who was involved, what you

were delegated, how you enacted the delegated action/responsibility and the outcome

of the situation. • Critically discuss how you demonstrated professional nursing practice, within

your student nurse scope of practice, and reflect upon accountability for your

decisions, actions, behaviours and responsibilities. • Support your discussion with at least three scholarly sources from 2011 onwards. Point of clarification: • The Registered Nurse standards document describes how the seven standards are

interconnected (see Figure 1, NBMA, 2016). Your clinical situation may incorporate a

description of you enacting one or more of the standards e.g. assessment (Standard

4), developing a plan (Standard 5), providing nursing care (Standard 6), or evaluating

care outcomes (Standard 7). 3. Peak professional nursing organisation A peak organisation (also known as a ‘peak body’) is a term for an advocacy group or trade

association (it may be in nursing, or medicine, or any ‘trade’), an association of industries

or groups with allied interests. They are established for the purposes of developing

standards and processes, or to act on behalf of all members. There are many peak bodies

in nursing, ranging from general organisations, such as the Australian College of Nursing

(ACN) to specialised organisations such as the Australian College of Critical Care Nurses

(ACCCN) or the Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association (APNA).

• Consider where your professional interests lie and identify and report on a

peak professional nursing organisation relevant to your career path. • This report must include the membership requirements, whether this organisation

supports advanced or specialty practice, how this organisation supports and leads

professional nursing practice, what professional opportunities are provided through

the professional organisation and a justification why it is relevant to your intended

career path. Page 2

OTHER ELEMENTS: • You do not need to include an introduction or conclusion to this written assessment • Use a heading for each of the three components of the assessment • Provide one reference list at the end of your written assignment which presents

all references (from the three components) in alphabetical order. • State your word count (excluding your reference list) on the Assignment Coversheet. • Do not exceed 2,000 words. Words over 2,000 will not be read or marked. • Submit your DRAFT assignment via Turnitin as per the instructions on your

USQ course site.

HEALTH COMMUNICATION AND PUBLIC HEALTH CONCERNS

DUE 3/2/18 8 P.M EST

MIN 3 REFERENCES, APA FORMAT

TITLE: HEALTH COMMUNICATION AND PUBLIC HEALTH CONCERNS

To begin developing a campaign, first identify a public health issue which you are interested in. Then research the public health issue to determine whether it is actually a critical issue. For example, if you want to help reduce drug use among urban youth, you need to investigate whether this is a critical issue among that group or if there are other more pressing issues. Research is an essential component to building an effective public health campaign. You must also consider what marketing strategies you might employ and how you might utilize public relations with your target audience.

For this Discussion, revisit the media titled “Introduction to Communications, Marketing, and Public Relations for Public Health Leaders”. Consider the steps needed to create a public health campaign for the public health issue that interests you. In addition, review the article “Farmers sun exposure, skin protection, and public health campaigns: An Australian Perspective” and pay particular attention to the steps taken to develop this campaign. Finally, review the media titled “Introduction to Communications, Marketing, and Public Relations for Public Health Leaders” and think about how communication of public health issues is vital to the role of a public health leader.

Develop a 1000-word Discussion post that addresses the following:

1) Identify a public health issue for which you are interested in developing a public health campaign.

2) Explain why this issue warrants a public health campaign.

3) Identify a key element of health communication that is essential for a public health leader, in particular a leader who wishes to address the issue you have selected.

4) Describe one potential challenge of developing a campaign for your public health issue and explain one way you might address the challenge.

Differences between neurologic and musculoskeletal condition causing symptoms

APA format, three references, at least 300 words

Review the following case study:

Chief Complaint:

A 23-year-old woman presents with complaints of muscle weakness in the face.

History:

The patient is a 23-year-old administrative assistant who complains of intermittent muscle weakness in her face that has been getting worse over the past 3 months. She also states that as she chews, her jaws feel tired. Swallowing has also become difficult. She reports episodes of double vision (diplopia), which seems to occur after reading for a few minutes in the late evening. With certain strenuous activities or after typing for long periods of time at work, she reports problems with bilateral arm weakness.

Physical Examination:

Notable ptosis (drooping) of the eyelids after repeated blinking exercises. When asked to smile, she appears to be snarling. Reflexes and sensation are normal in both upper and lower extremities. There is considerable weakness of the arms noted bilaterally after exercise.

Case Questions:

  1. Is the patient’s condition neurological, musculoskeletal, or both? Explain why and support your thoughts with evidence-based literature. What would be a possible neurologic or musculoskeletal condition causing the symptoms?
  2. Explain the pathophysiology behind the condition.
  3. What pharmacological agent(s) are commonly used to treat the disorder and how do the agent(s) alter the pathophysiology of the condition?
  4. What would be your educational plan for the patient?

The epidemiologic concepts of time, place, and person to a specific population health problem

Descriptive Epidemiology

HIV/AIDS was first recognized as an epidemic in the United States in 1981. At the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, the life expectancy for infected persons was less than 7 years. Today, because of research and new treatment options, people who begin treatment soon after diagnosis can expect to live a nearly normal life span (Cairns, 2010). The HIV/AIDS epidemic was identified through descriptive epidemiology.

Descriptive epidemiologic studies are often conducted as precursors to analytic studies. Epidemiologic concepts are used to gather data to better understand and evaluate health trends in populations. Data such as characteristics of the persons affected, place where an incident occurred, and time of occurrence are collected and analyzed to look for patterns in an effort to identify emerging health problems. In this Discussion, you will apply the epidemiologic concepts of time, place, and person to a specific population health problem.

To prepare:

  • Consider      a variety of population health problems, and then select one on which to      focus for this Discussion.
  • Identify      a specific population affected by your selected health problem.
  • Research      the patterns of the disease in your selected population using the      epidemiologic characteristics of person, place, and time.
  • Explore      three to five data sources presented in the Learning Resources that could      aid you in describing the population and magnitude of the problem. Analyze      the strengths and limitations of each data source.
  • Consider      methods for obtaining raw data to determine the variables of person,      place, and time for your health problem. Ask yourself: How would the      methods I select influence the accuracy of case identification,      definition, and diagnosis?

By tomorrow Wednesday 03/07/18 by 4pm, write a minimum of 550 words in APA format with a minimum of THREE scholarly references from the list of required readings below. Include the level one headers as numbered below:

Post a cohesive response that addresses the following:

1) Evaluate your selected health problem in the population you identified by describing THREE to FIVE characteristics related to person, place, and time.

2) Appraise the data sources you utilized by outlining the strengths and limitations of each.

3) Discuss TWO methods you could use to collect raw data to determine the descriptive epidemiology of your health problem, determine how these methods would influence the completeness of case identification as well as the case definition/diagnostic criteria used.

Required Readings

Friis, R. H., & Sellers, T. A. (2014). Epidemiology for public health practice (5th ed.). Sudbury, MA: Jones & Bartlett.

Chapter 3, “Measures of Morbidity and Mortality Used in Epidemiology”

Chapter 4, “Descriptive Epidemiology: Person, Place, Time”

Chapter 5, “Sources of Data for Use in Epidemiology”

Chapter 3 examines several measures of disease frequency that are typically utilized in epidemiology.

In Chapter 4, the authors address a basic premise of epidemiology: that disease occurs in patterns reflecting underlying factors (rather than occurring randomly). Using the tools introduced in Chapter 3, it is possible to take a more detailed look at the occurrence of disease, focusing on characteristics related to person, place, and time. This chapter also notes the distinction between descriptive versus analytic epidemiology; descriptive studies characterize the amount and distribution of disease within a population, whereas analytic epidemiology is concerned with the determinants of disease.

Chapter 5 provides information about various data sources that are available to the general public, and the authors examine some of the critical issues related to data collection and use that require careful attention.

Chapter 12, “Information Technology”

In this chapter, the authors examine the use of information technology, noting that research based on richer, more real-time data will inform policy decisions in all parts of the health care system. The challenge of integrating individual patient is mobile applications into the electronic health record are presented.
