The Influence of Mission and Vision on Planning

The Influence of Mission and Vision on Planning

As you read the following mission statements, think about what you might deduce about each organization:

“Nurses advancing our profession to improve health for all,” American Nurses Association

“The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors,” American Red Cross

“The mission of Southwest Airlines is dedication to the highest quality of Customer Service delivered with a sense of warmth, friendliness, individual pride, and Company Spirit,” Southwest Airlines

“To inspire hope and contribute to health and well-being by providing the best care to every patient through integrated clinical practice, education and research,” Mayo Clinic

“Provide telehealth solutions and executive medical research management to enhance and support military healthcare and promote innovative medical technologies,” Telemedicine & Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC) The Influence of Mission and Vision on Planning

“Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful,” Google

An organization’s mission describes its core purpose. In partnership with the organization’s vision, which communicates a future-focused direction, the mission provides a basis for planning and decision making at all levels of the organization.

For this Discussion, you compare mission and vision statements from multiple organizations and consider how these statements relate to planning.

To prepare:

Review the information related to the planning hierarchy and mission and vision statements in this week’s Learning Resources.

Research the mission and vision statements of three different types of organizations: a for-profit health care organization, a not-for-profit health care organization, and an organization outside of health care. As you examine the organizations’ mission and vision statements, consider the following:

How effectively do the mission statements articulate the organization’s purpose? The Influence of Mission and Vision on Planning

How effectively do the vision statements reflect future aims?

Do the mission and vision statements convey who (which groups) the organizations serve? Do they indicate obligations to various stakeholders?

Are the statements an appropriate length?

What do you glean about how leaders in health care and in other industries envision and convey mission and vision?

What do you discern about the interdisciplinary nature of crafting mission and vision statements by looking across organizations, including those outside of health care?

Identify key insights you have gained by comparing the mission and vision statements of these three organizations.

Consider how an organization’s mission and vision relate to the planning hierarchy. For each organization you have selected, think about how the mission and vision could or should influence planning. What elements of each mission and vision stand out as especially significant?

Post a comparison of the mission and vision statements of the three organizations selected. Explain how specific elements of each organization’s mission and vision statements might inform planning in that organization. Include references/links for the organizations’ mission and vision statements in your post.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ responses.

Respond to at least one of your colleagues using one or more of the following approaches:

Ask a probing question, substantiated with additional background information or research.

Share an insight from having read your colleagues’ postings, synthesizing the information to provide new perspectives.

Validate an idea with your own experience and additional resources. The Influence of Mission and Vision on Planning

Crafting a Mission and Vision for an Organization

Crafting a Mission and Vision for an Organization

In Discussion 1 of this week, you examined the mission and vision statements of various organizations and considered the implications of these statements for strategic planning. In this Discussion, you apply the insights you gained to the creation of an organization’s mission and vision statements.

Your Instructor has assigned you to a small group for this Discussion.

Note: You will develop individualmission and vision statements for your initial post. Through the collegial exchange that follows, you will offer each other suggestions for refinement. You will also work in this same small discussion group in Weeks 3 and 4. Crafting a Mission and Vision for an Organization

To prepare:

Evaluate what you have learned thus far about the process of developing mission and vision statements.

Reflect on the case study presented in this week’s media.

Consider what information would help you to create rich and appropriate mission and vision statements for Mountain View Health Center, the organization featured in the case study. Conduct additional research as necessary to strengthen your understanding of the process of crafting mission and vision statements and to deepen your thinking about the organization. For instance, you may research organizations with similarities to Mountain View and examine their mission and vision statements.

Draft a mission statement and a vision statement for Mountain View Health Center. Make the statements as clear and concise as possible. For example, you may want to write one to three sentences for the mission statement and one sentence for the vision statement.

Consider what you have learned about the process of developing mission and vision statements.

Reminder: Develop your mission and vision statements independently, and make your initial postingbefore you view your colleagues’ postings. Crafting a Mission and Vision for an Organization

Post  a mission statement and a vision statement for Mountain View Health Center, the organization featured in the case study. Offer insights you have gained about the process of developing your mission and vision statements.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ responses. Consider the following:

Are the mission and vision statements specific to and relevant for the organization?

Could these statements be implemented?

Are the statements an appropriate length, and do they include the appropriate amount of detail?

Are they clearly written?

How well do the statements relate to the other aspects of planning (e.g., stakeholders, environment, time frame)?

Respond to at least one of your colleagues, noting the strengths and weaknesses of the mission and vision statements, explaining potential implications of these strengths and weaknesses for planning, and suggesting opportunities for refinement. Note: Try to ensure that all postings have a response.

ORGANIZATION ASSESSMENT

ORGANIZATION ASSESSMENT

Preparation

To prepare for this assessment, use the Capella Library and the Internet to study the impact of health system’s power structure on nursing, leadership, diversity related to empowerment in nursing and patient outcomes, and recruitment of a diverse workforce. You may also wish to look for examples of an Executive Summary on the Internet.

  • Identify a type of health care facility and examine the Web site and available public information to review the organization of the nursing department, nursing recruitment, and any information about the diversity of the system’s workforce and leadership.
    • You may use the health care setting in which you currently work or have worked in the past.
    • Describe the type of organization and region. For example: A major Midwestern teaching hospital or a rehabilitation hospital on the East Coast.
      • Do not report the name of the facility. ORGANIZATION ASSESSMENT
  • ORDER   A PLAGIARISM FREE PAPER   NOW

Deliverable:

Write a 2–3-page Executive Summary of Organizational Diversity.

Read the following scenario:

Scenario:

The city in which you work has undergone a significant population shift within the last 10 years, due to increased employment, education opportunities, and an influx of immigrants and refugees. To put the population shift in perspective, the local school district enrollment report states that nearly 100 languages are spoken in the schools, up from 32 languages in the last census. Senior leadership has asked you to examine all types of multiculturalism and diversity within your health care organization. ORGANIZATION ASSESSMENT

To do this, you will need to use a system perspective to examine the relationship between a diverse workforce and patient outcomes; identify gaps between best practices and the organization’s diversity policies, and make a recommendation for organizational change.

In the Executive Summary:

  • Analyze the impact of a diverse workforce on patient outcomes.
    • In what ways or situations might multiculturalism and diversity impact health care delivery or patient outcomes?
    • How is diversity defined in the organization?
  • Analyze how the health care system integrates diversity and multiculturalism into its practices.
    • Is the make-up of the organization’s leadership representative of the patient and employee populations? Is this important? What would you change?
    • Explain how multiculturalism and diversity can impact health care delivery or patient outcomes.
  • Analyze current recruitment and retention policies to identify gaps between best practices and current policies.
  • Assess the level of integration and importance of multiculturalism and diversity in a health care organization.
    • Are all types of diversity recognized and included?
    • Provide support for your position by including 2 or 3 examples of the integration of multiculturalism and diversity into the organization.
  • Recommend evidence-based changes to the organizational structure and systems leadership that empower a diverse workforce.
    • What changes would you champion as a health care leader to make the system more responsive to patients and the organization’s workforce?

Make your document easy to scan for readers by:

  • Using subheadings to organize content.
  • Using bullet points and phrases for main points, in addition to short, succinct paragraphs.
  • Including a visual, such as a graph, table, or chart. ORGANIZATION ASSESSMENT

Additional Requirements

  • Written communication: Written communication should be free of errors that distract from the overall message.
  • APA formatting: Resources and in-text citations should be formatted according to current APA style and formatting.
  • Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point, double-spaced.
  • Length: Summary report should be 2–3 pages.

Transitioning From Closed to Open Systems

How do effective nurse leaders and others approach problem solving and decision making in organizations? As suggested in this week’s Learning Resources, systems theory provides a valuable way to assess situations and prepare to address problems.

For this week’s Discussion, you identify an issue or process that could be improved and apply knowledge and strategies related to systems theory.

Note: You may find it helpful to view the Assignment instructions and use the same problem for this Discussion.

To prepare:

  • Review the information presented in this week’s Learning Resources on systems theory and the difference between open and closed systems. Transitioning From Closed to Open Systems
  • Reflect on the practices and processes with which you are familiar in your organization. Identify one problematic issue or process that could be improved.
  • Consider the problem from a closed-system perspective. Then think about how the issue or process you selected could be addressed by viewing it from an open-system perspective. How would the transition from a closed- to an open-system view help you and others to address the problem and improve outcomes?

ASTHMA Assignment

Complications of asthma can be sudden. Consider the case of Bradley Wilson, a young boy who had several medical conditions. He appeared in good health when he went to school, returned home, and ate dinner. However, when he later went outside to play, he came back inside wheezing.

An ambulance took him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead (Briscoe, 2012). In another case, 10-year-old Dynasty Reese, who had mild asthma, woke up in the middle of the night and ran to her grandfather’s bedroom to tell him she couldn’t breathe. ASTHMA Assignment

By the time paramedics arrived, she had passed out and was pronounced dead at the hospital (Glissman, 2012). These situations continue to outline the importance of recognizing symptoms of asthma and providing immediate treatment, as well as distinguishing minor symptoms from serious, life-threatening symptoms.

Since these symptoms and attacks are often induced by a trigger, as an advanced practice nurse, you must be able to help patients identify their triggers and recommend appropriate treatment options. For this reason, you need to understand the pathophysiological mechanisms of chronic asthma and acute asthma exacerbation.

To Prepare

  • Review “Asthma” in Chapter 27 of the Huether and McCance text. Identify the pathophysiological mechanisms of chronic asthma and acute asthma exacerbation. Consider how these disorders are similar and different.
  • Select a patient factor different from the one you selected in this week’s Discussion: genetics, gender, ethnicity, age, or behavior. Think about how the factor you selected might impact the pathophysiology of both disorders. Reflect on how you would diagnose and prescribe treatment of these disorders for a patient based on the factor you selected. ASTHMA Assignment
  • Review the “Mind maps—Dementia, Endocarditis, and Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)” media in the Week 2 Learning Resources. Use the examples in the media as a guide to construct two mind maps—one for chronic asthma and one for acute asthma exacerbation. Consider the epidemiology and clinical presentation of both chronic asthma and acute asthma exacerbation.

To Complete

Write a 2- to 3-page paper that addresses the following:

  • Describe the pathophysiological mechanisms of chronic asthma and acute asthma exacerbation. Be sure to explain the changes in the arterial blood gas patterns during an exacerbation.
  • Explain how the factor you selected might impact the pathophysiology of both disorders. Describe how you would diagnose and prescribe treatment for a patient based on the factor you selected.
  • Construct two mind maps—one for chronic asthma and one for acute asthma exacerbation. Include the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and clinical presentation, as well as the diagnosis and treatment you explained in your paper.
