Evidence-based practice is essential to nursing. According to Melnyk and Overholt (2018) the practice of monitoring outcomes is important for delivery of best practices when knowledge of the results of provided care determines the quality of services as evidenced by their impact on the patient, healthcare services systems, and cost. It is no secret that as healthcare evolves and practitioners gain knowledge through outcomes, the overall quality and delivery of healthcare improves. Knowledge is power.  Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing

Dissemination Approach

Ford et al. (2011) identified the step-by-step process of implementing an EBP change: Engaging stakeholders, securing administrative support, meeting preparation, review of compiled work, and execution of the meeting. Because I thoroughly enjoy public speaking and engaging an audience, I would most likely utilize a presentation approach to disseminate my EBP idea via unit-level or organizational-level presentations. Impacting an organization unit by unit is most affective as you can cover more ground and provide the education in intimate settings.  Another approach I would lean toward would be the drafting of publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Nursing journals make their way around, so this approach could reach a vaster audience. There is not a particular approach that I find least favorable because I am up for a challenge and am open to various approaches.

Barriers

Some barriers would be staff or organization interest or dedication to certain subject matter. In a study conducted on healthcare professional views on barriers to implementation of EBP, Madhuvu et al. (2022) identified deficits in nurses’ knowledge of and adherence to evidence-based practice and inadequate use of evidence to underpin practice. I honestly see how this can be an issue. Many days on the unit, you are just trying to make it through the shift and keep everyone stable and alive. As nurses we have such a vast array of knowledge that we tend to compartmentalize things that are irrelevant to everyday practice. We do what we need to keep moving, never really pausing; autopilot if you will. This is not the best practice, but in the current healthcare climate, it is the practice. Evidence base practice refers to using the best available evidence for decision-making and providing efficient and effective care for patients on a scientific basis. Systematic implementation of EBP can enhance healthcare safety and improve patient outcomes.

It is well known that evidence-based practice (EBP) is an indispensable part of health care and plays a critical role in reducing practical variability, enhancing health care quality, perfecting the health care system, improving patients’ outcomes, and decreasing costs.

EBP promotes the quality, efficacy and cost-effectiveness of psychotherapeutic interventions and reduces the likelihood of harm.

EBP leads to the generation of new knowledge.

By promoting knowledge translation, EBP facilitates the clinical decision-making process for practitioners.

Dissemination as a planned process that involves consideration of target audiences and the settings in which research findings are to be received and, where appropriate, communicating and interacting with wider policy and health service audiences in ways that will facilitate research uptake in decision-making. Dissemination strategies aim to spread knowledge and the associated evidence-based interventions on a wide scale within or across geographic locations, practice settings, or social or other networks of end-users such as patients and health care providers. One of the dissemination strategies I will utilize in this project is poster presentation, which provides a visual representation of your research through text, charts, graphs, and other visual aids. A poster presentation allows viewers to read your research material at their own leisure and to interact with you. The purpose of a research poster is to visually represent the general overview, data, and most relevant findings of a research project. Typically, research posters accompany an oral presentation of the project conducted, but should also be able to independently represent the research. Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing
