Formulating a question that targets the goal of your research is a challenging but essential task. The question plays a crucial role in all other aspects of the research, including the determination of the research design and theoretical perspective to be applied, which data will be collected, and which tools will be used for analysis. It is therefore essential to take the time to ensure that the research question addresses what you actually want to study. Doing so will increase your likelihood of obtaining meaningful results.

In this first component of the Course Project, you formulate questions to address a particular nursing issue or problem. You use the PICOT model—patient/population, intervention/issue, comparison, and outcome—outlined in the Learning Resources to design your questions.

To prepare:

  • Review the article, “Formulating the Evidence Based Practice Question: A Review of the Frameworks,” found in the Learning Resources for this week. Focus on the PICOT model for guiding the development of research questions.
  • Review the section beginning on page 71 of the course text, titled, “Developing and Refining Research Problems” in the course text, which focuses on analyzing the feasibility of a research problem.
  • Reflect on an issue or problem that you have noticed in your nursing practice. Consider the significance of this issue or problem.
  • Generate at least five questions that relate to the issue which you have identified. Use the criteria in your course text to select one question that would be most appropriate in terms of significance, feasibility, and interest. Be prepared to explain your rationale.
  • Formulate a preliminary PICO question—one that is answerable—based on your analysis. What are the PICO variables (patient/population, intervention/issue, comparison, and outcome) for this question?
  • Using the PICOT variables that you determined for your question, develop a list of at least 10 keywords that could be used when conducting a literature search to investigate current research pertaining to the question.

A Review on How to Access and Implement AHRQ's Evidence-Based Resources to Inform your Clinical Practice

Nurse practitioners (NPs) and other advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) are leading providers of health care services in the United States and will play an increasingly prominent role in patient care as access expands. NPs can play an important role in promoting evidence-based preventive health practices by, for example, incorporating recommendations from the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) into clinical practice. AHRQ has incorporated USPSTF recommendations into the Electronic Preventive Services Selector (ePSS), which is a user-friendly evidence-based decision support tool designed for mobile technology. In addition, AHRQ has a number of other resources, such as the Effective Health Care (EHC) Program, which are designed to provide clinicians with current evidence on a wide variety of tests and treatments.

Your program culminates in a capstone project in MN 600 where you bring together what you have learned and present a project to the academic community. This Assignment

gives you the skills and knowledge to begin collecting credible information needed for future assignments and experience with APA citation by creating your own

annotated bibliography. As you read in the annotated bibliography handout, an annotated bibliography contains two main parts: bibliographic information (in APA format)

and an annotation. Annotations vary, and for this Assignment, your annotations should provide a:

Summary of the book, article, white paper, website, or other resource
Evaluation of resource. Is the source research related? If so, is it a qualitative or quantitative study or mixed?
Fully assess the sources and offer comments or criticisms of it. Is it a reliable source? Is the article current? Is this source scholarly or popular? Can this source

be used in a final paper?
Application to your program or future research
For your annotated bibliography, you will annotate 10 sources with at least five scholarly (peer-reviewed, evidence-based), three articles from professional and

credible websites (i.e., NIH, CDC, etc.), and the remaining two your personal choice, although still credible sources. The topic should be related to your program of

study (nursing education, nursing administration, nursing informatics, or advance nursing practice).

After you have compiled your annotated bibliography, reflect on the sources you used for this Assignment. For example, consider the following questions.

What difficulties did you encounter when evaluating the credibility of your sources?
