Suppose you have been asked to submit an article for publication in your organization’s newsletter, about a global health topic and how policies and practices at the local level can affect global health. Choose one global health topic from the list (or use another of your choice):

  • Mental health.
  • Communicable diseases (HIV/AIDS, influenza, malaria, tuberculosis).
  • Non-communicable diseases (cancer, lung, and heart disease).
  • Maternal and child health (prenatal care, midwife education, childhood vaccinations).
  • LGBT health.
  • Disabilities.
  • Global water supply and safety (GlobalHealth.gov, n.d.).

Look in the Capella library and on the Internet for very recent peer-reviewed articles, statistics, and professional nursing information on the global health topic you selected.

Linda has been a nurse educator at LiveWell Medical Center for about 3 years. Studies of parenting find that low family income and maternal hardship hamper children’s cognitive and social competence. 14 Moreover, parents in poor living environments have difficulty nurturing and protecting their children, increasing the likelihood that children will gravitate into activities and peer associations leading to school dropout, premature sexual experience, use of drugs, and other deviant behavior. 15 Family deprivations also increase the probability of abuse and neglect of children, who then seek to escape the household early, associate with inappropriate peers, form tenuous sexual partnerships, have early pregnancies, and often replicate the pattern of inadequate parenting they experienced as children. 16

Recommendation

Payments to health plans and providers should promote quality health care and improved health and functional status for all patients, including vulnerable populations. Adjusting payments for differences in health or functional status is especially important for Medicare, Medicaid, and other payers that have significant enrollment of individuals with chronic illness or disability so that health plans and providers have an incentive for developing innovative models of care that best serve these individuals

Additional investment should be provided for developing, evaluating, and supporting effective health care delivery models designed to meet the specific needs of vulnerable populations. The lack of evidence of effective approaches to enhance the health and functional status of persons with chronic illness or disabilities suggests the need for significant additional investment in research and innovation for health care and rehabilitation programs serving these patients. In addition, telemedicine and similar innovations, incentives for health care professionals to practice in underserved areas, and enhanced availability of prehospital emergency services should be assessed as approaches for improving the access to care of those facing geographic barriers to appropriate care.

As a baccalaureate nursing student, you are developing new competencies in leadership, and in order to achieve mastery, you must apply those competencies to live practice experiences and situations. This Leadership Learning Experience (LLE) is designed to allow you to choose a clinical focus (e.g., practice, policy, education, population) in which you apply your leadership problem–solving skills. The LLE requires engagement with other people within the setting to complete.

As with all projects, you should think how you, as a nurse, function in the following roles: detective, scientist, and manager of the healing environment.

Requirements:

Your submission must be your original work. 3.  Analyze the state of the situation using current data.

a. Analyze areas that might be contributing to the problem or issue.

4.  Propose a solution or innovation for the problem or issue.

a.  Justify your proposed solution or innovation based on the results of your investigation and analysis.

5.  Recommend resources to implement your proposed solution or innovation. Include a cost-benefit analysis of your proposed solution or innovation.

6.  Provide a timeline for implementation based on your proposal.

7.  Discuss why each key stakeholder or partner is important for the implementation of the solution or innovation.

a.  Summarize your engagement with the key stakeholders or partners, including the input and feedback you received.

b.  Discuss how you intend to work with those key stakeholders or partners in order to achieve success.

8.  Discuss how your proposed solution or innovation could be implemented, including how the implementation could be evaluated for success. 

B.  Explain how you fulfilled the following roles during your process of investigation and proposal development:

1.  scientist

2.  detective

3.  manager of the healing environment 

C.  Submit the completed attached “Professional Verification Form” from the organizational leader advising you in your leadership experience. 

D.  Acknowledge sources, using APA-formatted in-text citations and references, for content that is quoted, paraphrased, or summarized. 

E.  Demonstrate professional communication in the content and presentation of your submission.

In this Assignment, you will analyze recent presidential healthcare agendas. You will also prepare a fact sheet to communicate the importance of a healthcare issue and the impact on this issue of recent or proposed policy.

To Prepare:

  • Review the agenda priorities of the last three U.S. presidential administrations.
  • Select an issue related to healthcare that was addressed by each of the last three U.S. presidential administrations.
  • Reflect on the focus of their respective agendas, including the allocation of financial resources for addressing the healthcare issue you selected.
  • Consider how you would communicate the importance of a healthcare issue to a legislator/policymaker or a member of their staff for inclusion on an agenda.

  • Who was the entrepreneur/champion/sponsor of the healthcare issue you selected?

Part 2: Fact Sheet or Talking Points Brief

Based on your Agenda Comparison Grid for the healthcare issue you selected, develop a 1-page Fact Sheet or Talking Points Brief that you could use to communicate with a policymaker/legislator or a member of their staff for this healthcare issue. Be sure to address the following:

  • Summarize why this healthcare issue is important and should be included in the agenda for legislation.
  • Justify the role of the nurse in agenda setting for healthcare issues.
