What are your and your peer nurses’ ethical responsibilities to ensure that such an incident would not again occur?

FOR PHYLLIS YOUNG

For this discussion, respond to the following questions.

Elder abuse has become a growing concern as the American population ages and the elderly make up a larger percentage of the population.

  • Discuss the various forms of elder abuse and the court decisions that have helped to define elder abuse and standards of care.
  • Read the case study in Exercise 20–4, “Witnessing Patient Abuse,” (Guido, p. 437) of Legal and Ethical Issues in Nursing text and then respond to the following questions:
    • Did the elder abuse in the case study constitute civil or criminal abuse? State the rationale for your position.
    • Ethically, how should the elder resident in the case study have been treated? What ethical principles were violated in the case?

Your initial post is to be about 150 words, referenced with at least one APA formatted reference.

EXERCISE 20-4

Ethical Scenario 20–4 Witnessing Patient Abuse

An 83-year-old resident of a nursing home was physically in good health, but had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. At times, this resident would become confused and wander toward the doors of the nursing home, looking for her parents and a way to exit the facility. To prevent her from leaving the nursing home, the resident was fitted with a special bracelet that automatically locked an outer door if she came within 30 feet of the door. For fire-safety purposes, the door automatically unlocked within a 15-second time frame. Thus, staff members had essentially a 15-second time frame to notice an elopement attempt and redirect the resident.

Early one morning, the resident was trying to get out through the door and a staff member came up behind her, slapped her on the buttocks, grabbed her by the shoulders, turned her around, and shoved her back into an interior hallway. This episode was reported to the director of nurses. The director interviewed the other nursing staff members who were present during this incident; the director also examined the resident, noting that a red mark was present on the resident’s buttocks. The director then reported the nursing staff member to the proper state agency, and the staff member was charged with criminal abuse of a nursing home resident.

Without argument, the treatment of this patient was abusive. You are one of the nurses who witnessed and later testified to this incident. Ethically, what should you have done at the time of the incident? How might you have prevented the overt abuse that the resident encountered? What are your and your peer nurses’ ethical responsibilities to ensure that such an incident would not again occur?

 Re:Topic 1 DQ 2

Nursing Research

I have noticed that the nurse workplace has many hazards, an issue that puts their health at risk. Nurses are exposed to a lot of dangers that through their contact with physical and psychological job demands and patients. Such hazards include infectious diseases, drug toxins, violence in cases where the patients have mental issues and radiations (Alavi, 2014).  In respect to this, nursing research should be conducted on their workplace hazards. One of the reasons for these studies is to ensure that appropriate measures to protect nurses from workplace hazards are discovered such as materials to prevent nurses from contracting infectious diseases. These measures will ensure that nurses are comfortable while doing their jobs, which will make them more productive. When an employee in any institution is satisfied in their workplace, they tend to give their best. Also, this will ensure that nurses work without the fear of getting sick.

Another reason is that it these research will shed light on new hospital technologies that protect the nurses’ health. Some machines used in hospitals pose more risks to a nurse’s health by exposing them to radiations. It is, therefore, necessary to identify such devices through carrying out nursing research, and using the information gathered to replace such devices with other safer technologies. Finally, nursing research will help to identify and solve various psychological effects that nurses experience in their work.  Most people in hospitals have all sorts of diseases that can end up deforming the physical appearance of a patient. Therefore, a nurse dealing with such patents can get affected psychologically. In such cases, the nurse will need professional help to aid them to overcome these effects.

Formulate a PICOT statement for your capstone project.

A PICOT starts with a designated patient population in a particular   clinical area and identifies clinical problems or issues that arise   from clinical care. The intervention should be an independent,   specified nursing change intervention. The intervention cannot require   a provider prescription. Include a comparison to a patient population   not currently receiving the intervention, and specify the timeframe   needed to implement the change process.

Formulate a PICOT statement using the PICOT format provided in the   assigned readings. The PICOT statement will provide a framework for   your capstone project.

In a paper of 500-750 words, clearly identify the clinical problem   and how it can result in a positive patient outcome.

Make sure to address the following on the PICOT statement:

  1. Evidence-Based Solution
  2. Nursing Intervention
  3. Patient Care
  4. Health Care Agency
  5. Nursing   Practice

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA   Style Guide. An abstract is not required.

This assignment uses a rubric.

You are required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite. Please refer to the directions in the Student Success Center.

Rubric:

The identified problem/issue can be resolved, or a patient outcome can show a marked improvement through a nursing intervention.

2. Clinical problem/issue description includes a developed and thorough explanation of the problem/issue, the setting, the patient population, and the rationale for why it is a problem/issue. The identified clinical problem/issue explains the following elements with detail and clarity: evidence-based solution, nursing intervention, and improved patient care consistent with specific health care agency resulting in nursing practice change. Sound rationale is provided in the discussion of the clinical problem/issue resolution.

3. PICOT statement clearly focuses on the resolution of a clinical problem/issue and aims at improving patient care through the application of an evidenced-based nursing intervention.

4. Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcomes, and Time are comprehensive and thoroughly developed with supporting details.

5. Thesis is comprehensive and contains the essence of the paper. Thesis statement makes the purpose of the paper clear.

6. Clear and convincing argument that presents a persuasive claim in a distinctive and compelling manner. All sources are authoritative.

7. Writer is clearly in command of standard, written, academic English.

8. All format elements are correct.

9. Sources are completely and correctly documented, as appropriate to assignment and style, and format is free of error.
