Evaluate scholarly nursing literature that supports evidence-based nursing practice.

Question Description

Prepare two educational handouts (two pages each), one for community members and patients and one for health care providers, that provide information about common bacteria or viruses and how to reduce the risk of infection. Both handouts can be written about food borne illness or influenza.

  • Competency 1: Evaluate scholarly nursing literature that supports evidence-based nursing practice.
    • Identify timely evidence-based data needed to explain a potential health threat.
    • Apply evidence-based research to a health care initiative.
  • Competency 2: Explain ways to promote safe, quality, evidence-based care to populations and communities in health care environments.
    • Apply evidence-based research to a health care initiative.
    • Explain the factors that can adversely affect the health of individuals.
    • Describe evidence-based preventative measures to increase safety.
  • Competency 4: Communicate in a manner that is consistent with expectations of nursing professionals.
    • Write content clearly and logically, with correct use of grammar, punctuation, and mechanics.
    • Correctly format citations and references using APA style.
To deepen your understanding, you are encouraged to consider the questions below and discuss them with a fellow learner, a work associate, an interested friend, or a member of your professional community.
    • What nursing organizations are responsible for ensuring safe, quality care?
    • Why is it important to identify causative agents and modes of transmission?
    • What identified key nursing interventions protect the public against food-borne bacteria and viruses?
PREPARATIONSearch the Internet for scholarly and professional peer-reviewed articles on food-borne illness or virus prevention. You will need at least three articles to use as support for your work on this assessment. In addition, look for statistics on cases of food-borne illness or influenza in your community. Sites such as the CDC, WHO, and state or public health departments provide the most current and reliable data.DIRECTIONSYour employer is hosting a Healthy Mind and Body Fair in your community. Your manager has asked for your help in creating educational materials about food-borne illnesses like E.coli or viruses such as influenza. The goal is to provide information about how to reduce the risk of infection. You have been asked to create two informational handouts on the same topic:
    1. One handout is for participants (community members, patients) that raises awareness about the transmission of common bacteria or viruses and how to prevent the spread of these common infections. Consider health literacy levels when preparing the handout for non-medical populations.
    2. The second handout is directed at allied health care providers. This material should provide a higher level of information and detail about the subject.
Each handout should cover the following:
    • Provide information about the illness and transmission.
    • Provide recent statistics of cases in the community, with sources noted.
    • Describe the scope of illness (symptoms, severity, adverse outcomes).
    • Describe both treatment and prevention options, with an emphasis on prevention.
    • Relay any new research or treatment modalities.
    • Include information your readers will want to refer to in the future. This includes Web sites or tips for finding additional information or additional resources.
Consider the reader when creating your handouts, and be creative!Format the handouts as follows:
    • Break up content into short paragraphs.
    • Use bullet points and lists whenever possible.
    • Use sub-headings to isolate different topics within the documents.
    • Remember, say no more than what is necessary; the urge to say too much can ruin a good handout.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTSEach handout should meet the following criteria:
    • Contain 500 words (2 pages).
    • Must be readable, concise, with a logical ordering of ideas.
    • Include a minimum of three references. (These must be recent, from within the past five years.) The same resources can be used for both handouts.
    • Provide adequate documentation of ideas and appropriate APA citation of relevant literature.
    • Assignment submission should include one complete document, prepared as follows:
      • Title page for the participant handout.
      • Participant handout.
      • Reference page in alphabetical order for the participant handout.
      • Title page for the allied health care provider handout.
      • Allied health care provider handout.
      • Reference page in alphabetical order for the provider handout.
      • Be double spaced in Times New Roman font, 12 point.
I have provided the example of what it should look like in the file section

Students,

I was disappointed in the overall grades for the assignments this week. Several of you did not use APA to format your papers nor use the example provided at the beginning of the course. The students that did use those resources received high grades because they were able to meet the criteria of the assignment.

For week 4, make sure you use APA for your papers. Address the strengths and weaknesses of each question. The example provided demonstrates how the paper should be set up with headings.

Read the comments on your papers. If you did not format your paper at all I only wrote on the paper not in APA.

Make sure the references you are using are peer reviewed and within 5 years unless it is a classic. The most common peer reviewed resources are books and journals. Websites are not peer reviewed, especially websites. Slideshare is not a peer reviewed source. Stay with books and journals for your references.

Assignment 3: Persuasive Paper Part 1: A Problem Exists

ELIZABETH FOSTER

November 5, 2017

PROFESSOR HOLLY SPRINKLE

STRAYER UNIVERSITY

Should laws governing nursing homes be changed?

Although the nursing homes are filled with the elderly, should they be made to relingquish all of their property to pay for nursing home. Is the system failing the elderly?

The Federal Government should not allow this to happen to the elderly. What are they doing to resolve this matter.

Nursing home care is undeniable expensive, what happens when you’ve worked all your life and you plan to have a nice nest egg stored away for and your loved ones only to sell it in order for you to live out the rest of your life in a nursing facility?

There should be laws in place for any individual that is experiencing a medical disease or can no longer care for themselves and is under doctor’s order must transistioned into a nursing home. The nursing homes all have different prices that they charge. Usually payments will be made through Medicare, Medicaid, private insurances or personal monies that have been saved. When I was completing the paperwork for my mother to be admitted into a nursing facility, the admission office kindly told me that her Medicare will not cover her stay because she was diagnosed with Dementia which means her level of care will more than likely remain the same for the duration of her stay at the facility so therefore is best that the paperwork be drawn up so that Medicaid which is a state/federal health insurance program for low income patients. Which the nursing home care is covered through Medicaid and plus the facility is garuanteed to get paid.

Over all, 31.5 percent of Medicaid’s $400 billion in shared federal and state spending goes to long-term care for the elderly and the disabled. According to the U.S. Bureau of the Census, slightly over 5 percent of the 65+ population occupy nursing homes, congregate care, assisted living, and board-and-care homes, and about 4.2 percent are in nursing homes at any given time.

With more than 70 million people enrolled in Medicaid, the program certainly faces long-term financial challenges. Federal Medicaid spending is projected to grow 6 percent a year on average, rising to $650 billion in 2027 from $389 billion this year, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

“Certainly, nursing homes would be part of those cuts, not only in reimbursement rates but in reductions in eligibility for nursing home care.” (www.nytimes.com/2017/06/24)

Skilled nursing staff consisting of RNs, LPNs, and certified nurses’ aides (CNAs) are available to provide 24-hour medical attention. Skilled nursing facilities are commonly used for short-term rehabilitative stays. Extending stays into longer-term care must be medically necessary for the treatment of a serious medical condition and is largely dependent on state and federal benefit regulations. Interview with Water’s Edge Health Care and Rehabilitation Center (my mother is a residence here)

Explain economic, social, political, environmental, complexity, inequity, ethical/moral, etc

We are definitely under staffed and paid. There hasn’t been any raises in three years. Unfortunately a lot of our nurses due to child care issues will have to switch off shifts just so they’ll be able to work. Upper management doesn’t address the problems at hand instead they keep patching things up around here and nothing is being done about it. Who’s in charge of decision-making and withthe end-of-life care. The staff has lack of resources so that we may perform our job duties as needed. We have made suggestions to the management team that maybe they should bring in some animals to get the residents involved more and to cheer them up. Have more Family and Friends Day instead of once a year. Get the youth/community attention about our aging residents. Give the residents more to eat so they’re not unhappy throughout the evening. We need to adopt a better system with dealing with the residence monthly Patient Allowance Exchange-give them more than $35.00 a month to spend on personal items.

No matter what, I will still be part of the care team. I will still be my mother’s advocate. I will give much of my attention and my life to help her. I have learned to accept and respect reality. I try hard to have a life of my own so that I don’t get burned out. That’s a wining situation for both sides.

Dr. Snuggles, a hospital intensivist,* works 12 hours on and 12 hours off in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) at Riverfront Medical Center. What Dr. Snuggles lacks in looks, he makes up for with self-confidence and a cheeky sense of humor.

Question Description

Despite being married for 20 years to the same woman, he propositions almost every female he meets. No one takes him seriously, and the women joke back and forth with him. That is, until a rumor begins to circulate Dr. Snuggles really is having an affair.

As the nurse manager of the MICU, you are used to the rumor mill. You have a million things on your plate, and this item goes on your very long TO DO list. You make a note to yourself that when you have time, you will speak with Dr. Snuggles in private. You will tell him that while no one has formally complained, his behavior is bordering on sexual harassment and people are saying things.

You go home after a long day and fall asleep as soon as your head hits the pillow.

At 3 am, the phone rings. The caller’s voice is slurry, as if he’s drunk.

“Dr. Snuggles is having an affair with Bob.”

You are half asleep and say, “Who is this?”

“Dr. Snuggles is GAY.”

The caller hangs up. You check the caller ID. The number is blocked.

Now you are wide awake. Bob is an RN who reports to you in the MICU. An excellent nurse, Bob works alongside Dr. Snuggles every day. Ridiculous. Dr. Snuggles is married. Bob is a consummate professional, well liked, respected by his peers. What an outrageous phone call.

When you arrive at work the next day at 7 am, the morning nursing report is abuzz. Several other people received the same anonymous phone calls. Bob is not on that shift, nor is Dr. Snuggles, so there’s no way to address this matter right away. You get to work on the pile of papers on your desk. Late that day, you open your interoffice mail and a find a piece of paper that appears to have been printed on a computer. The large blocky font spells out: “Bob and Dr. Snuggles are GAY.”

You call Human Resources and get their voicemail recording. The entire department is at an offsite retreat for the day. Callers should try back tomorrow. You get busy with other burning issues and set the Dr. Snuggles matter aside.

At the end of your 10-hour day, you decide to close your office door and stay late to research the matter. You consult the Riverfront Medical Center policy manual. It does not forbid consensual sexual relations between coworkers. However, it does state that if a romantic relationship exists and one of the workers supervises the other, the couple must declare the relationship and find a way to move into different roles. Dr. Snuggles does not supervise Bob. You are Bob’s supervisor. The policy manual is silent on same-sex relationships, except where it applies to benefits for domestic partners. They are not domestic partners. Dr. Snuggles is married to Mrs. Snuggles, a stay-at-home mother of two teenage twin boys who are seniors in high school.

Just as you think it might be a good idea to put your head in the sand and pray the rumor mill shuts down, you hear two people arguing in the conference room next door to your office.

Bob’s voice pierces the wall. “I’m sick of being your work spouse, Snuggles. I want to be your real partner.”

“I told you, I have to wait until the boys are out of the house. This will be hard on them.”

“I’ve been waiting for five years. I’m tired of this charade. I’m telling your wife.”

Something slams into the wall and you jump to your feet. You run to the next room, throw the door open and find Dr. Snuggles and Bob in a passionate embrace.

So much for putting your head in the sand.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. What are the facts in this situation? What is known and not known so far?

2. What is the nature of this organizational problem?

3. What steps should be taken to investigate this further? Is this sexual misconduct? Have Dr. Snuggles and Bob violated any of Riverfront Medical Center’s policies?

4. Does it matter that Bob is a male, not a female RN?

5. What is the role of the nurse manager in this scenario? What immediate action should she take? What longer term actions should she plan?

6. What kind of clinical and financial impacts do you think Dr. Snuggles and Bob’s behaviors might have for the hospital?

7. Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) exist to help employees with personal and family issues, including addictions. Should Dr. Snuggles and Bob be referred by HR to EAP?

8. Have you ever been aware of a romantic liaison at work that made you uncomfortable? Provide your reflections and personal opinions as well as your recommendations for what could have been done differently in this case. Provide a rationale for your response.

Explain how theoretical frameworks influence advance.

Question Description

Explain how theoretical frameworks influence advance.

Purpose

The purpose of this Assignment is to explore how a theorist explicates his or her philosophy and thoughts behind a theoretical field. As in other fields of study, nursing has a plethora of theorists and theories. These theorists have developed their paradigm over time enriching it with research and dialogue with other theorists.

Directions

You are going to explore how a theorist of your choice created his or her theory. Did it develop as an acorn becoming a mighty oak over the decades? Did it arrive as a burst of light like the big bang as some believe created our universe? Was it developed from a blueprint like a spaceship where thousands of scholars worked together to create a rocket to the moon? In point of fact, how is a theory developed? This is what we are exploring.

You will pick a theorist who interests you, it does not have to be a nurse theorist. You may also choose from other disciplines such as: behavioral, leadership, business, education, technology.

You will become the theorist immersing yourself in the writings from the earliest mentioned to the most current.

As you read, look at how you (taking on the persona of the theorist) developed the theory.

In the first stage, theorizing occurs. This is where you, as the theorist, identify the concepts of what nursing is and is not. Perhaps you questioned what concepts were guiding those in nursing practice and then started to question your role. You started asking yourself, “Where am I in nursing, and where the profession is going? Is there some overarching concept that guides the professional in his or her practice?” This is where you recognize that a theory is needed.

In the second stage, syntax is developed. This is where you will define the terms. Look for changing definitions of terms. Consider, for example, Jean Watson. She starts by defining the word “caring.” Within the last ten years she has refined her terminology changing the term caring to caritas. This demonstrates a growth and maturation from decades of research she and other scholars did to produce the theory of caring.

The third stage is theory testing. Defined as the phenomena behind the theory that are exposed through research. The definitions of terms are refined. The theorists and other researchers consider whether this theory helps answer questions that arise in practice. This is where your theory is used in by a widening group of researchers. For example, graduate nursing students request the tool you developed while testing your theory.

The fourth and last stage is evaluation. This is where philosophical debate occurs as the concepts are applied through evidenced based practice in the act of providing nursing care.

Assignment Details

For this Assignment, you are going to write an article for a nursing journal explaining how you developed your theory through the four stages (theorizing, syntax, theory testing, and evaluation). Your paper must be 3 to 5 pages, not including the title and reference pages.
