Discussion: Diversity in the Workplace

NURS 6221: MANAGING HUMAN RESOURCES – Discussion 9 (Grading Rubic Attached)

Discussion: Diversity in the Workplace

Creating and managing a diverse workforce is a process, not a destination.

—R. Roosevelt Thomas, Jr.

What concepts come to mind when you think of diversity? What kinds of diversity exist in your workplace? How does diversity impact communication, working relationships, productivity, and patient care?

In the workplace, focusing on differences can create divisiveness. Nurse managers should approach diversity as a way to highlight, communicate, and build on the commonalities of their workforce. Modeling this behavior can encourage appreciation for diversity and create a more positive workplace environment. When managing a diverse workforce, nurse managers should never make assumptions about an individual’s motivations, goals, or work ethic based upon personal traits such as age, gender, race, or culture. Nurse managers should strive to facilitate an inclusive environment for all.

To prepare

Review the article, “Diversity within Nursing: Effects on Nurse-Nurse Interaction, Job Satisfaction, and Turnover.” Examine Figure 1 on p. 218. Determine how these and other diversity issues might impact the interaction of nurses in the workplace.

Consider situations in your current organization or one with which you are familiar in which obvious diversity exists. How do these types of diversity issues affect the daily work environment?

Examine this week’s Learning Resources to identify strategies for finding commonalities among workers. How might these strategies also help to increase appreciation of diversity within the workplace?

Post an explanation of how diversity-related issues impact your current organization or one with which you are familiar. If you do not believe there are any issues related to diversity, explain how this workplace instills a culture of acceptance and positivity. Conclude your posting by describing at least two commonalties everyone in this workplace shares and at least one new strategy you could implement to increase appreciation of both differences and similarities.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ responses.

Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days using one or more of the following approaches:

Appraise a colleague’s strategy by providing insight into whether or not this strategy could effectively mitigate diversity issues. Support your comments by using authentic examples and references to this week’s Learning Resources.

Suggest an additional strategy a colleague could use to mitigate diversity issues.

NURS DNP: Professional Opportunities for Doctorally Prepared Nurses

Discussion: The Doctoral Degree and Professional Nursing Practice

Why did you decide to enroll in graduate school? What informed your decision to pursue your chosen degree? How will earning this degree influence your career?

This week, you consider the characteristics of various programs, including the DNP and the PhD. The focus of the DNP degree is on clinical practice, whereas the focus of the PhD is on research. In conjunction with other professional colleagues, DNP- and PhD-prepared nurses often collaborate to analyze critical issues and find appropriate ways to address them.

This first Discussion provides an opportunity for you to examine what it means to earn a doctorate and how your selected degree program relates to your professional goals.

To prepare:

Consider the reasons you have chosen to pursue an advanced degree. How do you anticipate that earning this degree will support your professional goals?

Reflect on the comments shared by the experts in this week’s media regarding the value of a DNP degree and the various roles available to DNP-prepared nurses, as well as the characteristics of the PhD program and opportunities for PhD-prepared nurses.

Based on the information presented this week, have you developed any new ideas or goals for your future? If so, what are they?

Post a cohesive response that addresses the following:( 1TO 2 PAGES )

What does it mean to be a nurse with a practice or research doctorate? What are the expectations associated with this degree? How might this be different for a nurse who holds a different degree?

How do these considerations relate to your motivation to pursue a doctoral degree right now?

Chapter 10, "Introduction to Middle Range Nursing Theories"

Middle Range or Interdisciplinary Theory Evaluation

Assignment 2: Middle Range or Interdisciplinary Theory Evaluation

As addressed this week, middle range theories are frequently used as a framework for exploring nursing practice problems. In addition, theories from other sciences, such as sociology and environmental science, have relevance for nursing practice. For the next few weeks you will explore the use of interdisciplinary theories in nursing.

This Assignment asks you to evaluate two middle range or interdisciplinary theories and apply those theories to a clinical practice problem. You will also create a hypothesis based upon each theory for an evidence-based practice project to resolve a clinical problem.

Note: This Assignment will serve as your Major Assessment for this course.

To prepare:

  • Review strategies for evaluating theory presented by Fawcett and Garity in this week’s Learning Resources (see under list of Required Readings and attached pdf file)
  • Select a clinical practice problem that can be addressed through an evidence-based practice project. Note: You may continue to use the same practice problem you have been addressing in earlier Discussions and in Week 7 Assignment 1.
  • Consider the middle range theories presented this week, and determine if one of those theories could provide a framework for exploring your clinical practice problem. If one or two middle range theories seem appropriate, begin evaluating the theory from the context of your practice problem.
  • Formulate a preliminary clinical/practice research question that addresses your practice problem. If appropriate, you may use the same research question you formulated for Assignment #4.

Write a 10- to 12-page paper (including references) in APA format and a minimum of 8 references or more, using material presented in the list of required readings to consider interdisciplinary theories that may be appropriate for exploring your practice problem and research question (refer to the sample paper attached as “Assignment example”). Include the level one headings as numbered below:

1)       Introduction with a purpose statement (e.g. The purpose of this paper is…)

2)       Briefly describe your selected clinical practice problem.

3)       Summarize the two selected theories. Both may be middle range theories or interdisciplinary theories, or you may select one from each category.

4)       Evaluate both theories using the evaluation criteria provided in the Learning Resources.

5)       Determine which theory is most appropriate for addressing your clinical practice problem. Summarize why you selected the theory. Using the propositions of that theory, refine your clinical / practice research question.

6)       conclusion

MY PRACTICE PROBLEM IS AS FOLLOWED:

P: Patients suffering from Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

I:  Who are involved in diabetic self-care programs

C: Compared to those who do not participate in self-care programs

O: Are more likely to achieve improved glycemic control

THE THEORIES USED FOR THIS MODEL ARE:

An abstract is usually a brief outline of the contents of the paper that typically does not exceed 250 words. At the end of the abstract place the phrase Key Words, and denote 3-4 keywords that would describe your paper (as for publication and indexing in CINAHL or PubMed).
  • Pages 3-11: Narrative
    • Heading: Significance and Background: Start the paper with a short paragraph that introduces the health problem in your PICOT question. (Approximately ½-page).
    • Heading: Purpose: Clearly define the global health problem, and discuss why it is important for nursing (why you are discussing this topic).  Discuss what is known about this problem in the United States and in a non-USA country.  For example, if the focus is adult hypertension, discuss guidelines for defining hypertension in the US and in a non-USA country.  (Approximately 1 page).
    • Heading: Methods: Discuss the methods used to select the following research studies.Next use the subheading:
      • Sub-headings: Study #1: Nursing research Study in the USA (Approximately 1½ pages)
      • Sub-headings: Study #2: Nursing Research Study Non-USA (Approximately 1½ pages)
      • Sub-headings: Study #3: Nursing Research Study USA or Non-USA (Approximately 1½ pages)
      • Sub-headings: Study #4: Nursing Research Study USA or Non-USA (Approximately 1½ pages)
    • Heading: Conclusion.  Summarize the key points from your discussion. How would you translate (use) the new evidence found from your appraisals to change practice or answer your PICOT question? (Approximately 1 page).

Nurses play an integral role in the provision of quality health care. In addition, nurses make up for the largest section of the health profession (Haddad & Toney-Butler, 2019). According to the study conducted by Zhang, Tai, Pforsich, & Lin in 2018, there will be a shortage of 154,018 RNs by 2020 and 510,394 RNs by 2030. Nursing shortage is a healthcare issue that could potentially impact the delivery of care and increase medical errors. Some of the factors contributing to nursing shortage are aging RN workforce, the growing elderly population, nurse burnout, high turnover, inequitable distribution of the workforce, and violence in healthcare setting (Haddad & Toney-Butler, 2019; Sawaengdee, et al., 2016).

Nursing shortage is an on-going issue in my organization. I am currently working as an Operating Room Nurse in Florida under the Colorectal and Minimally-invasive surgery service. In the OR, nurses usually work with a specific service to ensure that the individual needs of the surgical team and the patients will be met based on the knowledge and expertise of the nurses in the service. During the past few months, there was a steady increase in the number of nurses leaving the department. Remaining nurses are now forced to take on a different service every day and stay extra hours after shift to meet the OR cases demand. Although nurses were exposed to different services during the orientation period of 6 months, the unfamiliarity to different cases and surgeons alongside work burnout could potentially lead to errors, longer turnover time, and poor outcomes.

Management are actively responding to nursing shortage by hiring new graduates and providing incentives for staying after shifts and for picking up extra days to work. Nursing residency program (NRP) is now being offered to new graduate nurses (NGNs) to solve the issue of nursing shortage and to increase nursing retention. In a study conducted by Ackerson & Stiles (2018), shows that NRP in acute care settings are successful in retaining NGNs, which decreases organizational costs. In relation to picking up extra hours of work, nurses are allowed to leave early when all the cases for the day are done before their shift ends to prevent nurse burnout.

Homework Number 2

For this paper, you need to re-read your Philosophy of Nursing paper you completed in the beginning of the course. Make any changes to it that you feel are needed, and correct anything I pointed out in the grading or rubric for that paper.

Then simply , write out each numbered question and briefly answer it.

  1. As an art and as a science, how has your personal nursing philosophy unfolded?
  2. Have there been ideas that have challenged your personal values or assumptions?
  3. Have there been ideas that have caused you personal conflict and may lead to deconstructing those dispositions in a critical manner?
  4. What actions do you take that illustrate your personal nursing philosophy?
  5. Describe your own definition of the concepts involving the metaparadigm of nursing
  6. Has your first written philosophy of nursing changed? In what ways?

Attach these Q/A to your Philosophy Paper and submit in the appropriate place in week 8.

This paper does not need an abstract or additional references.

Be sure to correct any issues I pointed out in your first paper! I will deduct if you did not read the comments in your first paper and correct accordingly!
