Discussion Topic 1: Describe and discuss at least two of the nursing and/or midwifery workforce factors that are known to influence the quality and safety of healthcare delivery, such as avoidable adverse events and/or hospital-acquired complications.

Discussion topic 2: Read the conclusions made in study, Aiken et al., 2017. These can be seen both in the abstract and the section of the journal paper titled conclusion. In light of the conclusions made in the reading Aiken et al 2017: What are the implications of the results of this study for nurse managers and for bedside nurses?

Contribute to the group by being creative in your approaches to topics, being relevant to the presented viewpoints, and attempting to motivate the discussion. Be aware of grammar and sentence mechanics. Use proper etiquette. Remember that being respectful is critical.

Please remember that the values of mutual respect that is part of this unit of study extends into the virtual classroom environment. Participation in these discussion boards is required. Participation alone is not enough; a thoughtful and meaningful approach in your posts is required.

For this assessment you must copy and paste content from the contributions that you posted to the on-line discussion group. You will need to copy and paste your 2 posts from the discussion areas, including the date and time of your post to a word document.

This assessment should include a header with your name and unit of study. You should upload your word document to the Assessment 1 area of VU collaborate. You may use evidence or references to support your posts. References, in APA format, cited and the end of posts do not form part of the word limit.

Assessment 2: Essay – journal critique

OVERVIEW

This is an academic essay. You are required to conduct a critical appraisal of a primary research paper. Follow the criteria as set out in the rubric. Critical appraisal can be done in a range of formats but you must follow the rubric criteria. Headings below have been suggested and these are based on the rubric or assessment criteria.  Two papers are provided and you choose one.

DETAILS

You should follow the format of an academic essay and use well-structured headings. Headings are signposts and give clarity to writing. 
We strongly suggest the critical appraisal has headings for the following areas: 
1.         Introduction 
2.         The research problem and its significance 
3.         The research design and the methods. 
4.         Findings and their relevance to contemporary nursing policy and practice 
5.         Conclusion 
It is important you refresh your learning about academic essay writing and refer to the marking guide (assessment rubric). A range of resources to assist with Assessment 2 have been provided in VU collaborate. This includes a complementary activity to help you write critically, how to write an introduction and conclusion, and how to tackle essay writing in general. Be sure that if you struggle with assignment writing to attend the complementary activity. If you are entering from Diploma level it is essential you attend the complementary activity. 
The critical appraisal will be marked on the following areas: Introduction; The research problem and its significance; 
The research design; The research methods; Findings and their relevance to contemporary nursing policy and practice; Critical analysis; Use of evidence; Grammar, spelling and punctuation; Sentence, paragraph structure and sequencing; Closing paragraph(s)/ conclusion; Sources and referencing.

Read the marking criteria when planning and writing the critical appraisal 
There should be evidence of critical analysis of the research not just a gathering of information.
