Walden University offers a variety of nursing specialties from which scholars can choose based on their desired career path. Walden’s online programs for nursing meet rigorous standards for academic quality and integrity, and the College of Nursing didactic faculty all hold doctorates (Walden, n.d.). The staff of Walden including the academic and student success advisors are dedicated to ensuring that you have made the right choice in a specialty in the Master’s program. Choosing Education as my specialty was a no-brainer for me. While pursuing my Bachelor’s degree, I excelled in my Nursing courses and that lead me to start tutoring other students that were struggling in various courses. While tutoring, it inspired me to want to become a Nursing school professor which is one of the reasons I decided to pursue my Master’s degree. Knowing how hard it was to obtain my Nursing degree, I knew I wanted to be a part of making the journey easier for future students. The United States is currently experiencing a nursing professor shortage. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, U.S Nursing schools turned down 80,407 qualified applicants from baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs (AACN, 2020). Program Specialty

As a nurse, I want to give back and provide education and mentorship to students the same way I received it. I’ve always enjoyed

teaching and offering tips that help other students and coworkers succeed. Being a nurse, you are always learning throughout your career and that is one of the reasons I decided to be a nurse. Helping people who feel that certain tasks or concepts are challenging is so fulfilling to me. Since I am a new graduate Nurse, I am unsure about what my end goal is for my career. I’ve struggled back and forth in deciding if I wanted to be a Nurse Practitioner in the future. Knowing that I wanted to be an Educator indefinitely, I decided to pursue that career path first, and then if I decided I want to be an NP I could pursue that as well.                                          Professional Organization

Joining a professional organization is essential in furthering and growing your nursing career. These memberships provide various opportunities to network and learn practices that can contribute to your duties as a nurse and a leader. While engagement in professional organizations can prove to be a valuable personal investment of a nurse’s time and money, it is up to the organization’s board leader to promote the most current and relevant professional development opportunities to support and influence their members (Cherry, 2019). This is why finding a qualified and accredited organization that best fits your personal goals and growth. One professional organization that is affiliated with my Education specialty is the American Association of Colleges of Nursing as I mentioned previously. This organization works to establish quality standards for nursing education and promotes public support for professional nursing education, research, and practice (AACN, n.d.). To become a part of this organization, you must apply as an institution so that all faculty and students become members. As a future educator, I would recommend that the school that I teach at becomes a member of this organization. This membership ensures that students and faculty are receiving the proper education and quality needed to serve today’s population. I hope that one day I can be a member of this organization through an elite and accredited Nursing program. NURS 6003 Discussion Examining Nursing Specialties

Chanel,

Thanks for your post. I am pursuing my Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a specialty in nursing education. As you mentioned, there is a nursing professor shortage. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a 17% increase in demand for nurse educators through 2029 (Walden University, n.d.). This is one of the many reasons I felt a calling to return to school for a MSN. Many well qualified students are turned away due to lack of faculty in nursing schools (Shipman & Hooten, 2008). This disturbs me and drives me to recruit other great nurses to become involved in academic teaching.

Joining a professional organization is a great way to continue your professional development and network with other colleagues in your specialty. You mentioned the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and joining requirements are for institutions to apply and includes memberships for all faculty and students. The AACN is a wonderful organization if you are affiliated with an institution with membership. If you are not, I would recommend joining the National League of Nurses. This organization allows individual membership at a low cost of $80 per year. Membership benefits include their publication “Nursing Education Perspectives” which includes research articles on the advancement of nurse education (NLN, n.d.). Discussion: Examining Nursing Specialties

You have probably seen one or more of the many inspirational posters about decisions. A visual such as a forked road or a street sign is typically pictured, along with a quote designed to inspire.

Decisions are often not so easily inspired. Perhaps you discovered this when choosing a specialty within the MSN program. This decision is a critical part of your plan for success, and you no doubt want to get it right. This is yet another area where your network can help, as well as other sources of information that can help you make an informed choice.

To Prepare:

  • Reflect on your decision to pursue a specialty within the MSN program, including your professional and academic goals as they relate to your program/specialization.

By Day 3 of Week 10

Post an explanation of your choice of a nursing specialty within the program. Describe any difficulties you had (or are having) in making your choice, and the factors that drove/are driving your decision. Identify at least one professional organization affiliated with your chosen specialty and provide details on becoming a member.

By Day 6 of Week 10

Respond to at least two of your colleagues’ posts by sharing your thoughts on their specialty, supporting their choice or offering suggestions if they have yet to choose. NURS 6003 Discussion Examining Nursing Specialties Sample

Hi Chanel,

I commend you for knowing your desired MSN path you want to pursue early on in your nursing career. It sounds like you do have a great passion for teaching. As you have mentioned in your post, qualified undergraduate and graduate nursing applicants are being turned away due to faculty shortages as the top reason (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2020). As the demand for nurses is continually increasing, this is a genuine concern (BLS, n.d.).  To produce trained nurses, committed nurse educators are a crucial necessity (Gleeson, M., 2020).

Just like you, I also had difficulty deciding which MSN track I would pursue. I struggled between the family nurse practitioner and nursing informatics track. Considering the nature of the job that I will eventually take on after graduation, was a significant factor in determining the best choice. With your willingness to provide genuine guidance and offer constructive feedback to others, you will achieve great things in your chosen MSN career path (Valiga, T. & Thornlow, D., 2018). Good luck on your academic and professional journey. I wish you the best.

Walden University MSN Core Nursing courses – Generic information for success:

  1. Being graduate level adult learners – It is very unlikely that you will experience the quantity of or detailed guidance as in the announcements received in this course. Being so: Read the course announcements thoroughly and completely. Read the course announcements at least daily for any updates. Going forward the Instructors may post items at any time throughout the day or night. I have unfortunately received emails throughout this course with questions for which the information was previously addressed within the announcements. Again, reading the course announcements is imperative for your success.
  2. The utilization requirement of APA within assignments will increase as you progress to courses that are considered “writing intense”. The APA requirement within discussions will remain as you experienced within this course. This course is not considered writing intense. Familiarize yourself with the correct usage of APA 7th edition. It is within every graded item, within every Nursing course going forward. Familiarize yourself and utilize the Walden resources for APA assistance. I have diligently posted links to those resources several times during this course. NURS 6003 Discussion Examining Nursing Specialties Sample
  3. Use ONLY your Walden student email for communication with any Walden University representative. When communicating with your Instructor ALWAYS include your course number and section. Within this course I posted in the announcements numerous times your specific course number and section, as well asked that you include that information when emailing me. Sadly, I received emails that did not include this information, this delayed my assisting you as I had to request your course number and section. This alerts me that course announcements were not being thoroughly and completely reviewed. Going forward it is highly unlikely Instructors will respond to any email other than your Walden student email as email not in Walden origin routinely gets flagged as spam then deleted. Also be fully aware that Instructors required to respond to any email other than your designated Walden Student email.
  4. Be mindful if you do not participate in any Walden course during the 1st week (Day 1 through Day 7) – you will be removed from the course by Walden University regardless of your excuse. Your Instructor has no control over this – it is university policy!
  5. The grading of any assignment cannot proceed by your Instructor unless you submit your assignments via SafeAssign, then in BlackBoard. Traditionally a -0- score will be awarded, with no resubmission availability. At the Graduate level, you are responsible for your work being submitted per instructions AND grading rubric parameters and due date/time. Again, I strongly encourage you to submit your assignments before Day 7 to ensure yourself sufficient time to seek assistance and correct the issue. Remember SafeAssign Drafts and SafeAssign are different!
  6. For Discussions – There is a six (6) day period (Monday, Day 1 through Saturday, Day 6) allowed for the Discussion participation. No allowances for participation will be made outside of the six (6) Discussion active period. Any submitted post outside of the 6-day active discussion period will not be graded and you will receive a -0- score.
  7. Faculty cannot accept or grade any assignment or discussion through email.
  8. Do not wait until Day 7 to begin or submit your assignment. Assignments are due Day 7. At the Graduate level, you are responsible for your work being submitted per instructions, grading rubric parameters and due date and time. Being so = I strongly encourage you to submit your assignments well before Day 7 to ensure yourself sufficient time to seek assistance and correct any issue encountered. I have purposely made myself available to you each day including weekends and responded to you within 12 to 24 hours. Be mindful, Instructors are not required to respond to you on a daily basis. Going forward your Instructors will respond to your Contact the Instructor communications and emails within the required 48 hours’ time period.
  9. As a graduate level student, Instructors will not reach out to you to ensure your assignments/discussions are completed and submitted correctly. As a graduate level adult learner, it is your responsibility to ensure that your discussions and assignments are completed and submitted timely and correctly. As an adult learner, you need to take the initiative and reach out to your Instructor immediately when you encounter an issue. You were offered an online orientation by Walden University – Did you participate in that orientation? If not, I strongly suggest you contact your advisor and make arrangements.
  10. If you experience technical issues, please utilize your resources and contact the Walden Customer Care Team or Walden IT for assistance. Going forward you will encounter several PowerPoint presentations, Walden Templates within your future courses at Walden University, as well be required to submit multiple items with a single submission.
  11. Understand the Time Zones at Walden University and the applicable conversion. Your course calendar is in Eastern Time as is the time/date stamp of submission/participation for your discussions and assignments. Going forward all of your future Nursing courses require that your Discussions, any Quiz or Assignment will continue to be due submitted in Mountain Time.
  12. Have a computer and Internet backup plan. What will you do if your computer crashes or your Internet is not working?  Computer/Internet/work issues are your responsibility. Allowances will not be made due to these issues causing a lack of participation or missed deadline, rather a -0- score will be awarded. Save your work on a flash or hard drive. Know where you can go to access the Academic Skills Center as it is an excellent resource to assist in your success.
  13. For Assignments – Only prior communication with AND Instructor approval will late assignments be considered for grading. Assignments submitted late will be deducted 4% daily until Day 5 OR may deduct the entire 20% regardless of time/day of late submission. This is at the discretion of each Instructor and will vary course-by-course. After Day 5, in any course, the assignment will be scored a -0-.
  14. Be familiar with how to access and utilize the Walden resources. I posted the most useful and frequently utilized resources numerous times within the course announcements.
  15. Ensure your discussions have a substance, depth and breadth, critical analysis, and reflection element within the grading rubric. In short – if your discussion Main Post does not closely compare to the discussion exemplar located within the course resources and announcements posted within this course your grade will be drastically reduced.
  16. Know who and where to submit any documentation if necessary, for allowances for any late or missed assignments. Remember Instructors are not permitted to accept any medical documentation.
  17. Know who your advisor is and how to contact them.
  18. Know where and how to locate your student feedback. This course is 6 weeks in duration – In Week 5 I received emails inquiring as to “I see my grade but don’t know why points were deducted” – It was sadly apparent the feedback being provided was not being reviewed by those students. Your numeric score and student feedback are in different locations – this was addressed in the course announcements. If you cannot locate or have not located your student feedback for discussions and assignments – I strongly encourage you to contact the Customer Care Team as you have missed a tremendous amount of information. Initial Post

I have been an RN(ADN) for approximately 20 years, and I have seen many changes in healthcare. I was working in the ICU and decided I needed a better work life balance. So, I took a job as a clinic float nurse. I was able to still have some variety, provide direct patient care, patient education, assistance with procedures, IV starts, and foleys. I eventually stopped floating and starting work in one department where I was able to still have direct patient care and room patients. As nursing has changed within the organization that I work, RNs no longer room ( now MA and LPNs do) and most of my work time is spent on the phone triaging patients, calling results, and refilling medications. I have very little direct patient care. I enjoy and I miss direct patient contact and providing education. With the lack of direct RN patient care, I have witnessed the negative impacted it has had on patient care and outcomes. Patients and families are not receiving culturally competent care or the information and education that is needed to better manage their care and/or  make informed decisions. I am all for providing culturally competent care and treating the whole person mind body and spirit. I decided I wanted to make a difference, provide direct patient care, and improve healthcare disparities. I felt like the FNP was the most versatile and will allow to do so. According to Walden University (n.d.) the online FNP program focuses on evidence-based techniques that can enhance the quality of care and patient outcomes.

I did not have any difficulties in making may choice. I am excited to see where this journey goes and the impact I will make on healthcare and improving disparities.

Joining a professional nursing organization is needed for lifelong learning, develop and maintain competence, enhance nursing practice, and support the achievement of career goals (Gaines, 2019, para.2). One professional organization that would be beneficial for FNPs is the American Association for Nurse Practitioners ® (AANP). The AANP’s mission is to empower all NPs to advance quality health care through practice, education, advocacy, research, and leadership. To become a member requires a membership application and an annual membership fee. AANP membership offers free CE activities, current health care topics, advocate at state and national levels,  and resources for professional growth.
