Health policy is a description of a set of rules to govern the way the practice of health care should be implemented (Mason, Gardner, Outlaw, & O’Grady, 2016). Policies impact patient care in many different ways. From the admission process to the treatment plan and discharge. Specific policies can influence the type or number of tests given to any patient and what type of post admission aftercare is prescribed. Depending on the institution, some patients can receive inadequate care. Nurses can have significant role in shaping and implementing health policies.
Identify and discuss the spheres of influence and provide an example of each sphere.
Nurses participate in four different spheres of influence (Mason et al., 2016). They are:
Community: A group who shares common interest and goals in mind. Nurses can be a part of of local grassroots organizations, church groups and civic organizations to promote health and provide education about health care topics.
The Workforce and workplace: Organizations and/or facilities. Nurses working in a hospital can influence the local policy making process and advocate for patients and their collegues.
The Government: Funding, regulations, defense, agriculture, disaster response and protection. Nurses can run for office and influence the government from within.
Associations and Interest Groups: Committees, associations, and specialty groups. Nurses can be a part of the state hospital associations and help to influence policy. Elements Of Patient-Centered Care And Cultural Competence
What is the nursing profession’s role in shaping health policy and politics?
Nurses should be involved in shaping health policy and politics at every level. From the hospital policy committee to the state hospital association there are various ways to influence policy. Nurses should participate in the political process, by running for office or at least engaging elected officials in conversation. Our profession is uniquely positioned to be the health care’s force for change.

The World Health organization states health policy refers to decisions, plans, and actions that are undertaken to achieve specific health care goals within a society. Policies impact patient care because they determine who gets health care at what cost and when, how and from who the care is delivered (Mason, Gardner, Outlaw, & O’Grady, 2016). As a nurse it is troublesome to not see all patients treated equally. I have seen many patients hospitalized and given the bare minimum care due to no insurance and sometimes this can create a scenario where a nurse needs to advocate for their patient. Nurses work in four spheres of influence to shape health and social policy to improve health, improve access, safety and quality of care and to reduce the cost of care. The four Spheres of Influence are:
Sphere 1: The community – nurses can serve in volunteer or elected positions that influence health policies in the community or publish articles to educate the community.
Sphere 2: The workplace and workforce – nurses can contact policy makers on policies such as staffing and clinical policies to implement change, or become a member of a board that implements these changes.
Sphere 3: The government – nurses can contact lawmakers with support or opposition, obtain a position in a state or federal agency, and attend open meetings on policy.
Sphere 4: Associations and interest groups – nurses can join groups public policy or legislative work groups.
What is the nursing profession’s role in shaping health policy and politics?
Nurses should be involved as much as possible with shaping health policy and politics whether it is in their workplace, community or on a state or federal level. Nurses see what policies work and which don’t, and how poorly some patients are affected are treated due to certain health policies and politics so the only way to fix these issues is to do something about it. Most nurses are a member of a professional organization in one way or another so that is the first step towards shaping health policy and politics. As a nurse I feel the the best thing I do for my patients every day is advocate for them, and I am able to do this is because I know the needs of my patients. With knowing what our patients need, what works and what doesn’t we are most equipped to influence health policies (Arabi, Raffi, Cheragi, Ghiyasvandian, 2014).
