She had this surgically repaired 4 days ago and is about to be transferred to a Sub-Acute Rehabilitation Unit with a plan to discharge her home in a week. She has a history of hypertension and osteoporosis and has a significant hearing deficit, requiring bi-lateral hearing aids, which she does not like wearing. She lives with her two dogs and is an enthusiastic volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the local Library. She has a daughter who lives locally. She tells her story: “I tripped and fell over one of my dogs as I was going to feed them, such a nuisance, my GP told me to be careful of falling because of my osteoporosis. I am very keen to get back home to my pets and garden though I do feel a bit worried about falling again now. I have had quite a bit of pain with this operation and today it is quite bad again. The nurses are worried about my wound as it is a bit red, I’m sure it will be alright. It’s hard to sleep in here – even with my hearing troubles it is very noisy! I’m feeling very tired but trying to do my best, I want to be able to get back to my busy life, I am very active and need to be able to drive and get around”. OVERVIEW

This is an academic essay. You are required to conduct a critical appraisal of a primary research paper. Follow the criteria as set out in the rubric. Critical appraisal can be done in a range of formats but you must follow the rubric criteria. Headings below have been suggested and these are based on the rubric or assessment criteria.  Two papers are provided and you choose one.

DETAILS

You should follow the format of an academic essay and use well-structured headings. Headings are signposts and give clarity to writing. 
We strongly suggest the critical appraisal has headings for the following areas: 
1.         Introduction 
2.         The research problem and its significance 
3.         The research design and the methods. 
4.         Findings and their relevance to contemporary nursing policy and practice 
5.         Conclusion 
It is important you refresh your learning about academic essay writing and refer to the marking guide (assessment rubric). A range of resources to assist with Assessment 2 have been provided in VU collaborate. This includes a complementary activity to help you write critically, how to write an introduction and conclusion, and how to tackle essay writing in general. Be sure that if you struggle with assignment writing to attend the complementary activity. If you are entering from Diploma level it is essential you attend the complementary activity.

Marcus recalls the beginning of his career, when he started as a nurse at Grand View Hospital. He had heard the organization was soliciting proposals from various companies so they could weigh the pros and cons associated with adopting a new health information technology system. He has been curious about the request for proposal (RFP) process ever since. Now, as he looks forward to new professional opportunities, he would like to ensure that he develops the skills and expertise needed to formulate an RFP.

 What are your professional aims? How can you apply what you have learned in your coursework to your practicum setting? How will you leverage your experiences in the practicum to facilitate your development as a nurse leader-manager or informaticist?

In this Discussion, you reflect on your aspirations and consider the transitions that may be required to achieve them. You identify professional development objectives and evaluate opportunities for achieving them through your experiences in the practicum.

Think about the professional role changes you have been undergoing or that you may undertake following completion of this MSN program.
