Development of a theoretical body of knowledge, unique to the nursing domain, is directly proportional to equivalent strides taken in the area of research. Effective integration of theory and practice is essential for the survival and growth of the nursing profession. To continue the cycle of meaningful advancements, researchers need to identify barriers and overcome them. Along with this, they also need to take note of factors that stimulate the process of theory development. NSG 5002 Week 2 Assignment: Theory Development – Barrier and Stimulants. Let’s examine how knowledge has played a crucial role in setting obstacles in the path of theory development on the one hand and, on the other, how it has facilitated the development of nursing theories. How did knowledge act as a barrier to the process of theory development? How did knowledge act as a stimulant in the process of theory development? NSG 5002 Week 2 Assignment: Theory Development – Barrier and Stimulants
Use of the knowledge of other disciplines was long seen as superior to that developed by nurses. Knowledge breeds knowledge; existing theory now provides impetus for further refinement and development.
Other disciplines, such as sociology, psychology, and physiology, prepared their students to do research in nursing and develop theories for nurses, rather than encouraging nursing to prepare its own students to do research and theory development. NSG 5002 Week 2 Assignment: Theory Development – Barrier and Stimulants Old paradigms are challenged by new ones as they are influenced by social factors, factors in healthcare, and practice changes.
The National League for Nursing (NLN) requirement for colleges and universities often resulted in the development of curricula with esoteric content. The new worldview is less mechanistic, more congruent with women’s views of science and nurses’ views of health; it is more wholistic and ecological.
The knowledge base developed was unrelated to practice and was far removed from preparing students to be change agents in practice. Nurses are trained to observe record, analyze, and solve problems, and this unique source of knowledge has provided research efforts that are, finally, far more based in the practice realm than ever before. NSG 5002 Week 2 Assignment: Theory Development – Barrier and Stimulants
The academic focus was on conceptual models as a way to develop theories and theoretical thinking, and often lost sight of the reason to conceptualize in the first place, that is, the underpinnings of nursing practice and patient care. Nurses spend long hours with patients and family, and are better able to identify and understand patterns of phenomena, rather than perceive health and nursing as a series of isolated incidents.
Development of conceptual models and theories was encouraged as a way to justify and define the status of nursing as a profession, and required the existence of theories. The move toward the development of middle-range theories, rather than grand theories and conceptual models, has allowed nurses involved directly in the provision of care to ask practice-based questions, do research to answer those questions, and develop new information on a more manageable scale.

Article 2 Review

Hegge, M. (2013). Nightingale’s environmental theory. Nursing Science Quarterly, 26(3), 211–219. https://doi.org/10.1177/0894318413489255

In this article the author examines Nightingale’s life and how her experiences eventually lead to her environmental theory. Nightingale started her life in a wealthy family, which gifted her higher education (Hegge, 2013). Despite her privileged life she saw the despair of poverty that affected many of those around her. Nightingale felt a calling to help these people and wanted to become a nurse, but her family strongly disapproved of her choice (Hegge, 2013). However, Nightingale was determined to help those less fortunate. She then started to recruit other women to become nurses as well to help those less fortunate. Through her endeavors Nightingale started to compose her ideals that nature was the driving factor of health (Hegge, 2013). Nightingale began to really solidify her ideals during her time on the front lines.  When Nightingale first arrived at the battlefront the environment was unsanitary; there were rats , filth, and injured men riddled with disease everywhere (Hegge, 2013). Besides offering a cleaning healing environment, Nightingale also brought hope to these soliders; she would walk all the cots with her lamp every night to check on all of her patients (Hegge, 2013). After the war Nightingale took her ideals to India. While establishing a military presence in the area, Nightingale reformed the barracks just as she did before. She took a filthy environment and cultivated an environment and cleanliness (Hegge, 2013). NSG 5002 Week 2 Assignment: Theory Development – Barrier and Stimulants

Nightingale worked her entire life to better humanity. During her life’s work she created the environmental theory nurses still use today. This theory brings necessities to patients, which promotes better outcomes.

Example

The aim of the paper article is to determine the predictors of health promoting lifestyles in pregnant women based on the Pender’s health promotion model constructs (Bahabadi et al., 2020). The article acknowledges there is need to avoid problems during pregnancy critical period by adopting the health promoting behaviors among women given that pregnancy causes changes in their lifestyle. The problems experienced by women during pregnancy period include risk of obesity and diabetes, need for caesarean section and likelihood of preterm delivery.  A descriptive study of a sample of 300 pregnant women was done to determine the correlation between constructs of the Pender’s health promotion model and lifestyle. Questionnaire was used to collect data for the study while analysis was done using the analytical and descriptive approaches. Findings from the study revealed that there was a positive significant relationship between perceived benefits and social support constructs of Pender’s health promoting model with the health-promoting lifestyle among pregnant women (Bahabadi et al., 2020). The results also reveal there was a significant negative correlation between the construct of perceived barriers with the health-promoting lifestyle among pregnant women. However, all the three variables namely perceived barriers, social support and perceived benefits could significantly explain the variance in health promoting lifestyles among pregnant women. The study concludes that these constructs of the Pender’s health promotion model are recommended to be predictors of health-promoting lifestyle in pregnant women. The adoption of health-promoting behaviors is critical towards preventing complications in pregnancy including multiple admission, early neonatal death, low birth weight, bleeding and maternal infection (Bahabadi et al., 2020). Health promoting behaviors include proper nutrition, prenatal care, effective communication with others and work and rest schedule. The Pender’s health promoting model helps in promoting and making decisions regarding health-promoting behaviors. NSG 5002 Week 2 Assignment: Theory Development – Barrier and Stimulants

Case Study in Caring Application of Watson’s Theory of Human Caring to End of Life Care in the Burns Intensive Care Unit: A Case Report

The case report involves a 22-year-old burn victim K.K. and the care that was provided to him while he was in the intensive care unit for life-threatening burns.  Burns affect a patient physically by leading to fluid volume loss, pain, and electrolyte imbalances (Bayuo, 2017).  But burns also affect and individually mentally and spiritually and they now have to live a life with decreased function and face the psychological impact that death may occur (Bayuo, 2017).  As a nurse, dealing with burns has been found to be exhausting due to the physical trauma that they must care for (Bayuo, 2017).  The case study listed is about a patient named K.K, a 22-year-old male that suffered extensive burn injuries to his bilateral upper and lower extremities, posterior trunk, and bilateral fractures to both of his legs (Bayuo, 2017).

Jean Watson’s theory of caring was utilized by the nurses caring for K.K. in which the goal was to connect with him in a genuine way and create a transpersonal relationship (Bayuo, 2017).  A transpersonal relationship involves being present and open minded with a patient so that both the nurse and patient can connect spiritually and emotionally (Bayuo, 2017).  By creating this relationship K.K. was found to become more interactive with the medical personnel around him and he began talking about memories and friendships he has created in his life.  This transpersonal relationship created a trusting environment where K.K. was able to live out his final days with a good quality of life when referring to the mind and spirit (Bayuo, 2017).  Watson’s theory in this case study was considered a success and provided K.K. with a quality of life even in his final days (Bayuo, 2017). Environmental Theory of Florence Nightingale Sample 2

Nurses should always strive to create a safe environment for patients regardless of the care they need. The most crucial responsibility that nurses are tasked with is to utilize their knowledge and resources to assist patients while they recover. This is the definition given by Florence Nightingale in the environmental theory. This theory urges the nurses to use the environment to their advantage while aiming to gradually restore patients’ health.

In the article, Nightingale Environmental Theory: The Mother of Nursing by Karimi and Alavi, the authors begin by defining the environment that Nightingale meant. The theory defines the environment by researching more about various cultures and circumstances that could help nurses leave more impact in the patients’ lives. The environment also has social policies that demean the health of human beings thus causing suffering and making the population unsafe. The article also shows the life of Florence and her achievements in modernizing the nursing practice.

The article by Gilbert on Nightingale Environmental theory shows how the theory has transformed  the nursing practice. The reforms made by the environmental theory are crucial in the practice of infection control since it has been hugely applied during the global pandemic that recently affected different parts of the world. Considered one of the most deadly viruses in the world, coronavirus patients have had a rough time coping with the virus. Even with a high number of deaths recorded, infection control is an integral part of nursing that has made it easier for nurses to create a safe environment for patients affected by the virus. Nurses have continuously worked hard to promote good health, well-being, and good outcomes for patients. The nursing profession has a high demand since nurses are expected to change patients’ lives while meeting the global need for providing quality healthcare services.

Florence nightingales Concepts Example Week 2 Discussion

There are many nursing concepts other than the concepts explored within the metaparadigm of nursing theory. For instance, a family nurse practitioner can apply one of the leading concepts of decision making when exploring the best alternative to make a sound intervention. The concept of decision-making allows the provider to make sound choices and solutions based on the available alternative and collected information (Medeiros et al., 2015). In most cases and especially in the nursing realm, the decision-making process significantly affects patient outcomes. Role transition from a registered nurse to an advanced practice nurse is another concept that can be applied to all advanced nursing practice roles. This concept has different ideologies that connect with individual roles and which different roles of advanced can be applied into practice (Medeiros et al., 2015). For example, when transitioning from RN to FNP roles, different factors and attributes are considered because they can differ from RN to CRNA. When shifting roles from RN to FNP, there is a change from an experienced person to inexperienced, potentially leading to loss of competence and confidence (Medeiros et al., 2015).

Theorists explain the concept of decision making in nursing practice as the use of rational defined procedures to select the best alternative from the several options to solve underlying problems in healthcare. The quality of collected data determines the type of solutions embraced based on the described situation. Conversely, role shifting is described by theorist in three stages. Role transitioning involves moving in, moving through, and moving out to examine the three-phase processes linked with role transition (Medeiros et al., 2015). These two new concepts of Florence Nightingale’s theory serve as the base that allows science and discipline to establish the nursing practice. These concepts also improve care practice by assessing planning, implementation, evaluation, and directing nursing research (Medeiros et al., 2015).  NSG 5002 Week 2 Assignment: Theory Development – Barrier and Stimulants

NSG 5002 Week 2 Assignment: Theory Development – Barrier and Stimulants – Week 2 Project

This week you will turn in a draft of your “Personal Philosophy and Theoretical Concepts” paper. Your paper should contain the following sections:

  • Nursing Autobiography: A brief (1 page) discussion of your background in nursing. This does not include future goals.
  • The Four Metaparadigms: Describe what the literature says about the basic four metaparadigms/concepts of patient, nurse, health, and environment. Do not relate the metaparadigms to the theory you have chosen.
  • Briefly describe the theory you have chosen.
  • Two Practice-Specific Concepts: in separate subsections discuss each of your two concepts:What is the definition of the concept (outside of the theory)? How does your theorist define your concept? How does this concept apply to your clinical setting? Give an example of how nurses in your area provide care that correlates with the theorist’s definition of the concept.

You MUST use the attached template here to complete your paper.

The paper is to be thoroughly researched and well documented, with relevant material from the nursing theorists presented incorporated into the paper. Use the current edition of the APA Manual throughout the paper. Sources should focus on references from nursing theory but may also include conceptual and theoretical material from other professional domains. The paper, excluding references or appendices, is to be limited to 3-5 pages. Writing should be succinct and well organized, as it is impossible for the facilitator to evaluate form and content separately. For Online Campus and Directed Study students, these are Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentations with detailed speaker notes.  MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE SPEAKER NOTES FOR EVERY SLIDE AND USE GRAPHICS.

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.

Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.

Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.

The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument. Weekly Practicum Assignments
Practicum Group Discussions

Overview
Week 1: Identification of a Population in Your CommunityAs a community of practice your task for this week is to collaborate with professionals across the health care system and with your community of practice in the discussion in order to find a gap in care or social determinant that often results in poor health care outcomes. You will begin to take the lead in advocating for and collaborating with others to improve the health care outcomes for populations at risk.
Week 2: Practicum: Epidemiology: Define Your Population and Selected ProblemThis week, you will further refine your population and problem and compare your suspicions about this problem to local, state, and national data on the topic. Your practicum project should come into clear focus as you continue to analyze related health data, and you should consider how you, as the nurse, might help them avoid development of the problem in the first place (primary prevention measures).
Week 3: Practicum: Population Cultural Considerations and Genetic PredispositionsThis week, you will identify any genetic predisposition your chosen population has to a particular disease and develop primary practice interventions that reflect the cultural considerations of the population. Then, you will develop culturally appropriate, measureable interventions to help your population members maintain an optimal state of health, avoiding the problem that you identified them being at risk for developing. NURS 4210 Community Health Issues & Concerns Discussion
Week 4: Evidence-Based Practice and Evaluation of the Project Through Measureable GoalsDr. Marcia Stanhope (2016) explained that evidence-based public health practice refers to those decisions made by using the best available evidence, data and information systems and program frameworks; engaging community stakeholders in the decision-making process; evaluating the results; and then disseminating that information to those who can use the information. Community Health Issues & Concerns
Week 5: Present Your PowerPoint Presentation to Your Community MembersThis week, you will be presenting your practicum project to community members, community professionals, or mentors to elicit their opinions about your project and to gather their suggestions for improvement, which you can then incorporate into the document before it is due by Day 3 of Week 6
Week 6: PresentationsThis week, you will present your PowerPoint presentation to the class incorporating the feedback you received from the presentation to community members in Week 5. The presentation is due in the discussions by Day 3 of Week 6. (Presentation also needs to be submitted to the Week 6 Assignment link.)

Overall Purpose for Practicum: Develop a potential project to improve the health of a specific population of interest or a population at risk.

This practicum is designed to help you develop as a scholar practitioner and health leader to promote positive social change in your own community. In this practicum experience you will focus on primary prevention of a health problem in your community (see text for definition.) You already possess the knowledge and skills to help those who are acutely ill. This experience will help learn how to prevent a health problem in a specific population at risk at the community and system level of care (see text for definition). Consequently, because you are well aware of how to care for individuals you will now develop leadership and advocacy skills to improve the health of the community. Collaborating with other professionals and community members in your community will be the key to a successful practicum and project. Collaborate with each other in the discussions, with your instructor, with health care professionals (nurses and other disciplines), with local and state departments of health, and most importantly with the population you hope to help. As an advocate, you will promote positive social change through collaboration with families, communities, and professionals in the health care system. You will develop a culturally relevant proposal that could improve health outcomes for a specific population at risk in your community.

Answer the following questions as you develop your evidence-based, culturally appropriate intervention for your community:

What health issue, problem, or disparity in health outcomes is of concern to you as a scholar practitioner in your community? What gaps in knowledge and care do you see as possible causes for the health issue? What does the health data tell you about the health issue? What does the literature tell you about the health issue? How can you learn about the health issue and about possible solutions from the viewpoint of families, community as a whole, and health professionals in your community? What evidence is there to support your proposal? What is one avenue you could advocate for improved health outcomes and know when a change has taken place?

Suggestions for the Project

Each week’s activities are geared to help you move along with your proposal. Use this time well and utilize some aspect of discussion and assignments in this course (e.g. windshield survey) to support your proposal as well. Read about the whole project before you start.

Suggestions for Discussions

The more you discuss your project with your group the better it will turn out. Consider posting earlier than Thursday to have a better discussion. Provide honest, respectful feedback to each other. Picture yourself as someone practicing in the other student’s community, working with and listening to your colleagues’ ideas weekly (as your read each other’s posts). You are responsible for helping your colleagues make the best decision in class in the same you would be if you were working side-by-side. Community Health Issues & Concerns Assignment

Review the focus for each week of the practicum. The weekly practicum discussions will help keep you focused on your project. You will receive guidance from faculty and help from other students in your group.

DISCUSSION

Overview: As a community of practice, your task for this week is to collaborate with professionals across the health care system. With your community of practice, in the Discussion, find a gap in care or social determinant that often results in poor health care outcomes. You will begin to take the lead in advocating for and collaborating with others to improve the health care outcomes for populations at risk.

Practicum Discussion: During this week, you will identify a population at risk in your community. This population will be the basis for your Practicum Discussions and your individual presentations over the next 6 weeks, as well as the focus of your final PowerPoint presentation in Week 6. To review, a population is a group of individuals who share a common environmental or personal characteristic, such as obese individuals who are at risk for diabetes or cardiovascular disease (populations at risk) or those individuals who are otherwise healthy and could stay healthy if they do not develop risky behaviors (populations of interest). An example of this is teenagers who don’t yet smoke but might consider it due to peer pressure (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2020). Some of the topics you might consider are vaccination compliance, obesity rates among children and adults, teenage pregnancy, or infectious diseases such as Norwalk virus, genital warts, or sexually transmitted diseases/infections. You might look also at emerging public health problems such as Chagas or the Zika virus. Some of the places you might consider looking for information to substantiate and support your ideas about populations at risk in your communities are your local health department, the CDC, and the many evidence-based websites that the CDC supports, such as the CDC Wonder (http://wonder.cdc.gov/). You may also review the work of other community groups that focus on improving health care outcomes for your community. You should begin to support your selection of population and ideas about their health care problems through the use of health data and scholarly literature.

Please address the following points in your Practicum Discussion:

  • Briefly describe your community and then describe your practice setting.
  • What are the determinants of health in your community? (https://www.healthypeople.gov/2020/about/foundation-health-measures/Determinants-of-Health)
  • What are the most prevalent health problems in your community or in your practice?
  • Choose a population at risk and describe the health problem specific to that population. Remember that you will have to define the population’s age, culture, religious beliefs, foods, and traditions eventually as your project progresses. Community Health Issues & Concerns Assignment

Cognitive Neuroscience Essay

Cognitive Neuroscience Essay

Discussion post – 2 to 3 paragraphs

In Module One, you were introduced to the mind-brain problem, where psychologists consider how the brain and the non-physical mind may impact or control behavior. Another important concept in psychology is understanding how the brain develops and changes, and what aids in these changes. Because the field of cognitive neuroscience examines the brain through imaging methods, it is an area of psychology that is poised to answer some of these questions. After completing this week’s readings, answer the following questions: How can current research in cognitive neuroscience be applied to understanding different problems in psychology, including the mind-brain problem and questions concerning brain development and change? How do you think modern imaging methods have helped us understand the brain and solve problems in psychology? Be sure to support your answers with information from the readings. Cognitive Neuroscience Essay

Cognitive Neuroscience Essay

Cognitive Neuroscience Essay
