Instructions
You will use the Omeka platform to develop a digital library prototype, which includes digital collections and online exhibits of digital materials (such as digital images, audio, and video). Collection Discussion Assignment
Sign up for a free-trial Omeka account and set up your Omeka site.
Build at least one collection that contains at least 10 15 items; if you want, you can add more items to your collection or build more than one collection. Your items can be photographs, manuscripts, maps, newspapers, sound recordings, motion pictures, etc.
Describe each item using at least 9 metadata elements. You will employ the following metadata guidelines to guide your metadata records creation process

Create at least one exhibit, which is a guided tour through your items, complete with descriptive text and customized layouts, using the items you added to the collection.
Using a simple page plugin, create an “About” page, which includes:
Description of your collection(s): what they are about, items included, copyright status of items, etc.
Description of your metadata creation: how you arrived at your decisions regarding what metadata fields to use and how to fill out those fields
Description of your exhibit(s): what they are about and what kind of content they contain

Question 2.2: What is a collection? What are the major characteristics of collections in a digital environment?
The term collection is broad, however, a collection in the context of the library world consists of documents that all came from the same source and were obtained together. For instance, a collection could be from a library that is created by information professionals for its members and the community to use (Lee, 2000, p. 1106). An effective collection is one that meets the interests and information needs of its members (Lee, 2000, p. 1109). According to Lee (2000), a collection provides users to quickly and easily obtain quality content (p. 1111). NISO Framework Advisory Group (2007) emphasized nine principles that apply to digital collections. The first principle is that a good digital collection is built on the basis of a clear collection development policy. The second principle is describing collections with important information so that users are able to locate it. The third principle is that the collection is managed throughout its lifespan. The fourth is the collection should be accessible and work with adaptive technologies. The fifth is intellectual property rights are respected in a collection. The sixth is a collection that has mechanisms to measure and supply data to be recorded. The last few principles consist of consistency, fit with the users’ workflow, and will last for a long time (NISO Framework Advisory Group, 2007, p. 4).
Major characteristics of collections in a digital environment include information about the scope, restrictions on access, ownership, and important information about the authenticity of the collection (NISO Framework Advisory Group, 2007, p. 4). In addition, digital collections do not have physical limitations, and they can be obtained online. Collection Discussion Assignment
