The Texas Board of Nursing promotes and protects the welfare of Texans, stipulating nurses be licensed and competent to practice (ATrain Education, n.d.). The board, rules, and standards guide professional nursing practice and highlight expectations for nurses to develop competencies. The board’s rules further highlight requirements for nursing education, nursing duties licensure (certification), and nursing practice. The standards are highlighted in laws and rules.Nurses adhere to the Nursing Practice Act (NPA) rules, regulations, and guidelines, and the Texas Board of Nursing (Board) or BON ensures the health practitioners are competent. The Nursing Practice Act of Texas provides for creating the board, and there are Board investigations if there are violations of the Act. The board’s rules stipulate the minimum standards and scope of practice while licensing and regulating nurses in Texas. There are laws and rules to ensure nurses provide safe care services (BON, 2021). However, facilities adopt policies or procedures that are not overseen by the board. At the same time, there are various educational pathways for nurses to get a Texas nursing license, the board issues licenses for those who have gone through approved nursing programs. The board provides positional statements that guide nurses on the scope of practice and patient safety, but the statements are not law. Board rule 217.11 is applicable in nursing practice on standards of nursing practice, and rule 217.12 focuses on unprofessional conduct (BON, 2021). The Nursing Practice Act (NPA) is contained in Chapter 301 of the Texas Occupations Code (TOC), while nurses are expected to be familiar with chapters 303 and 304 (NetCE, 2021). On the other hand, advanced practice registered nurses are expected to be familiar with chapter 305 on the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Compact (NetCE, 2021).ReferencesATrain Education.
