As an advanced registered nurse in school nursing, I will serve in a low-income and primarily Hispanic community. The Hispanic community faces increased obstacles to obtaining healthcare, higher rates of uninsured, tend to have low educational attainment, higher rates of behavioral risk, higher rates of unemployment, and higher risk for some chronic health conditions (DeNisco, 2021). As a school nurse, I have the unique opportunity to serve the students as well as the community to help promote health and wellness.
I can provide health education to students and their families on healthy lifestyle behaviors such as healthy eating and staying active to promote health and wellness and reduce the risk for chronic health conditions. I can also provide families with anticipatory guidance, parenting tips, and recommendations for wellness/preventative care for students and families. I can help connect families to needed resources so that they can obtain needed health care, including wellness and preventative healthcare, and serve as a care coordinator. I can also provide resources for vision care, hearing care, food, housing, billing assistance, etc. I can provide vision and hearing screenings to students. I can complete a community assessment to determine the needs of the community and then develop health programs to address the community’s unique needs, that incorporate their culture and preferences, to improve the health of the students and community.
We live in a diverse world. The Hispanic population increased by 43% in the United States, making them the fastest-growing population in the United States (DeNisco, 2021). It is important to understand different cultures and have a global perspective, to ensure you are meeting the needs of the patient or community you serve in a culturally sensitive manner, that meets the needs of the patient and not the provider. Taking the time to learn about the Hispanic population I serve, including their culture, values, and beliefs, will help me better understand how to be the healthcare provider they need and thus help reduce inequality.
