NURS6221 Differences at Work and “Identity Abrasions”

NURS6221 Differences at Work and “Identity Abrasions”

Week 8 Discussion

A more diverse workforce can create abrasive interactions that require your attention as a nurse executive. Miscommunication, misunderstanding, or entrenched and antiquated attitudes and beliefs may result in situations where one employee is offended, perhaps deeply, by others. These “identity abrasions” that occur when ideas and attitudes clash naturally vary but relate most typically to gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, and other defining qualities of individuals.  NURS6221 Differences at Work and “Identity Abrasions”

This Discussion provides examples of conflict situations and offers an opportunity to consider how you would respond as a nurse executive. Given understanding and empathy are key in supporting employees, approach each vignette from the perspective of the individual who feels wronged and what that individual may need in terms of resolution.

To Prepare:

Review the Learning Resources on diversity and inclusion in healthcare organizations.

Your Instructor will identify three “Differences at Work” vignettes as the focus of this Discussion. Read the three case studies and choose one as the subject of your Discussion post.

Identify the issues in your chosen case study and reflect on how a diversity and inclusion perspective might mitigate, address, or contribute to the concept of “identity abrasion” in the workplace.

Consider how this situation might affect organizational performance, staff morale and retention, and/or competitive advantage.

Consider how you would respond if you were the employee in your chosen vignette and what kind of support and resolutions you might seek, or what you would recommend to this individual in terms of responses. NURS6221 Differences at Work and “Identity Abrasions”

By Day 3 of Week 8

Post the following:

Briefly describe the case study you selected, and explain the elements of “identity abrasion” in the employee’s experience. From the position of the employee, describe what actions and strategies would be most welcome and effective for resolving this conflict situation. Support your post with Learning Resources or current literature.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ responses.

By Day 6 of Week 1

Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days, preferably one colleague who selected the same case study and one who selected a different case study. For a colleague with the same case study, compare your understanding and analysis of the situation and expand on or propose different strategies or actions for responding to the employee’s experience. For colleague(s) with different case studies, explain your questions or insights on the case study from the colleague’s description and suggest additional or alternative responses. Support your ideas with Learning Resources or current literature. NURS6221 Differences at Work and “Identity Abrasions”

NURS 8114 Discussion Philosophy of Nursing Practice

NURS 8114 Discussion Philosophy of Nursing Practice

NURS 8114 Discussion Philosophy of Nursing Practice

For this first course Discussion, you will present a philosophy of nursing practice that draws on your experience, area(s) of expertise, and beliefs. Looking ahead to your role as a DNP, also consider how to expand your awareness of issues beyond your own current practice—such as regarding diversity, global health, collaboration—and how to fulfill the Walden requirement to advocate for social change.

In short, begin now to commit to a higher level of contribution and practice as a DNP and to reflect that commitment in your philosophy of nursing practice for today and the future. As you continue through the course, note this image will appear with each Discussion and indicates an opportunity to connect your thinking with that of colleagues, for learning with and from one another.

To prepare:

Review the Week 1 Learning Resources. Pay particular attention to the Chapter 1 reading from McEwen and Wills, “Philosophy,

Science, and Nursing.”

  • Reflect on your nursing experience, expertise you have developed, and beliefs about nursing and nursing practice you have formed as a result.
  • Consider how your philosophy of nursing practice is shaped by these elements.
  • Consider goals for expanding your professional awareness through the DNP program and the requirement as a Walden student to be an advocate for social change. How can your philosophy of nursing practice support you in these areas? How can these goals and Walden social change requirement enrich your philosophy of nursing practice? NSG 6001 Assignment: Genitourinary Learning Points Review

NSG 6001 Assignment: Genitourinary Learning Points Review

Review provided a bulleted list of learning points from the clinical case and the salient features of patient education.

Included key points about patient’s presenting diagnoses, how learner arrived at each diagnosis, and the rationale behind suggesting the diagnostic tests.

Listed learner’s understanding of patient education for cardia care gathered from research.

In children, problems of the urinary system include acute and chronic kidney failure, urinary tract infections, obstructions along the urinary tract, and abnormalities present at birth. NSG 6001 Assignment: Genitourinary Learning Points Review

Diseases of the kidneys often produce temporary or permanent changes to the small functional structures and vessels inside the kidney. Frequent urinary tract infections can cause scarring to these structures leading to renal (kidney) failure. Some diseases that cause kidney damage include:

  • Glomerulonephritis
  • Hemolytic uremic syndrome
  • Polycystic kidney disease
  • Hydronephrosis
  • Urinary tract infections

Disorders of the urinary tract are often related to a blockage that prevents complete emptying of the bladder and often leads to reverse flow of urine. A urinary tract obstruction can cause damage to the urinary tract and kidneys because urine backs-up and pools in various areas along the tract. Pooling of urine in the bladder, ureters, or kidneys can lead to infection, scarring, and long-term kidney failure. Some disorders that cause obstruction of the urinary tract include:

ORDER  A PLAGIARISM FREE PAPER  NOW

  • Megaureter
  • Posterior urethral valves
  • Ureterocele or ureteral duplication
  • Vesicoureteral reflux
  • Neurogenic bladder

Several disorders of the urinary tract only affect males, which are largely related to the male anatomy as well as fetal development. Disorders that affect males may involve the penis, urethra, or testes. Some of the male urogenital disorders include:

  • Undescended testes or cryptorchidism
  • Hydrocele
  • Hypospadias
  • Inguinal hernia
  • Micropenis
  • Testicular torsion

Disorders of the genitourinary system in children are often detected by fetal ultrasound prior to birth. If not detected on fetal ultrasound, often children will develop a urinary tract infection that will prompt your child’s doctor to perform special diagnostic tests that may detect an abnormality. Some diseases of the kidney do not reveal themselves until later in life or after a child has a bacterial infection or an immune disorder. NSG 6001 Assignment: Genitourinary Learning Points Review

Age-related hearing loss (or presbycusis) is the gradual loss of hearing in both ears. It’s a common problem linked to aging. One in 3 adults over age 65 has hearing loss. Because of the gradual change in hearing, some people are not aware of the change at first. Most often, it affects the ability to hear high-pitched noises such as a phone ringing or beeping of a microwave. The ability to hear low-pitched noises is usually not affected. NSG 6420 Hearing Loss in Elderly People

There may be many causes for age-related hearing loss. It most most often occurs because of  changes in the following locations:

  • Within the inner ear (most common)
  • Within the middle ear
  • Along the nerve pathways to the brain

Other things that affect age-related hearing loss:

  • Continuous exposure to loud noise (such as music or work related noise)
  • Loss of hair cells (sensory receptors in the inner ear)
  • Inherited factors
  • Aging
  • Various health conditions, such as heart disease or diabetes
  • Side effects of some medications, such as aspirin and certain antibiotics

The following are the most common symptoms of age-related hearing loss:

  • Speech of others sounds mumbled or slurred
  • High-pitched sounds, such as “s” or “th” are hard to distinguish
  • Conversations are difficult to understand, particularly when there is background noise
  • Men’s voices are easier to hear than women’s
  • Some sounds seem overly loud and annoying
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) may occur in one or both ears

The symptoms of age-related hearing loss may look like other conditions or medical problems. Always consult your health care provider for a diagnosis. NSG 6420 Hearing Loss in Elderly People

Isaac has worked as a staff nurse on the telemetry floor for over 15 years. He holds seniority in the unit. His patient care is satisfactory; however, his interpersonal behaviors are becoming an increasing issue for his coworkers. He throws papers around the unit, gives short answers to questions, and seems generally miserable. He tells the staff that they are lazy and stupid. He is constantly questioning their decisions. You have come from another local hospital in the role of the assistant nurse manager. Based on your observations, you have met with Isaac informally and discussed his behaviors, but they have not changed. Now three new nurses have already come to you saying that this unit is a great match for them, except for one problem. Although they have not identified Isaac by name, they have told you that one of the nurses is extremely abusive verbally, and they have been calling in sick on the days they are scheduled to work with this person. 1. What are your responsibilities as an assistant nurse manager in regard to Isaac’s behavior problem?

2. What is the next step in dealing with Isaac’s behaviors?

3. How will you, as the manager, have Isaac develop more effective people skills?

This is your first position as a nurse manager. The holidays are rapidly approaching, and the hospital policy states that each unit will negotiate holiday coverage individually. You are already getting requests via e-mail and on Post-it notes for holiday time. Several staff members have come to you stating that they “never” seem to get their requests for holidays. Discussion among the staff members is creating dissension and conflict.

1. Discuss the potential impact of this problem on you and the unit staff.

2. Describe a minimum of one positive consequence and one negative consequence of this conflict.

3. Select a model of conflict resolution and explain how you, as a nurse manager, might resolve this conflict. DQ: Responsibilities as an assistant nurse manager
