My practice area is adult gerontology primary care nurse practitioner, and I did an article search for this subject.  Baker, Schipper, McCumber, and Fay (2021) discussed the benefits for both patients and nurse practitioner (NP) students in an article discussing the use of long-term care (LTC) facilities for preceptor sites.  NP students must meet a certain number of clinical hours as part of their program requirements. Since my program is adult gerontology nurse practitioner, an important clinical setting includes long-term care facilities consisting of adult patients.  Baker et al (2021) suggest findings indicate LTC settings that use NPs have seen improved pain management and functional ability, reduced falls, pressure injuries, and acute re-hospitalization. Miller (2019) suggests having experience as a registered nurse is not equivalent to graduate education and certification of a nurse practitioner and further explains that advanced practice nurses with primary care concentrations cannot practice outside of their scope such as in acute settings. Miller (2019) further discusses the necessity of preceptor facilities learning the different scopes of practice to train the student NP to care for that specific population.NURS 6002 Week 4: Scholarship and Nursing Practice Paper

The database I chose is CINAHL plus with full text.  One of the challenges I faced in searching for this article is using the right keywords to search for an article.  Bramer, De Jonge, Rethlefsen, Mast, and Kleijnen (2018) suggest using more specific terms for first article searches and then more generalized terms and also include Boolean to filter out irrelevant search results.  At first, I tried adult gerontology primary care nurse practitioner. Overall, I found about 5 articles related to the topic, so I did not have much to work with. I decided to expand the subject and changed the search term to adult gerontology nurse practitioner and found 25 articles.  I think this database can be useful to others as you can specify if you want peer-reviewed articles, add specified dates, and many other search options.NURS 6002 Week 4: Scholarship and Nursing Practice Paper

The Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) plus database serves nurses, students, researchers, educators, and other health care professionals through its authoritative index of health care literature (Wright et al., 2015). The database enhances access to book chapters, audiovisuals, standards of practice, dissertations, clinical trials, legal cases, full-text journals, etc. (LibGuides: Database Searching Tutorials: Further Information and Training: Cinahl Plus with Full Text, n.d.). CINAHL plus has a straightforward interface with perceptible cited references and basic and advanced search options. Additional search tools that can help adjust the scope and focus of a search include the use of stop words, wildcard and truncation symbols, field codes, etc. The CINAHL plus database is without a doubt a valuable resource for nurse professionals. Hello ,

Thanks for your post. I do agree that LTC facilities who use NP do see improved pain management, reduce fall and lower acute rehospitalization. Most of my nursing years were spent at LTC facilities. Implementing a nurse practitioner-led pain team in LTC significantly reduced resident’s pain and improved functional status compared to usual care without access to a nurse practitioner (PubMed, 2016). We had an NP in house Monday through Friday, this made it so easy to provide care to our residents. The NP saw residents who had change in their condition; she reviewed and addressed consults and also updated the families. Having her in house prevented delay in treatment. Whereas, other places I worked without the NP onsite, it was difficult to have the doctor return calls in a timely manner. At times, I had to call the doctor two to three times before getting a returned call. NPs are more available then most attendings to quickly assess and care for any urgent matter that may arise and by doing so reduce hospitalizations and liability issues (Pakizegee et al, 2019).NURS 6002 Week 4: Scholarship and Nursing Practice Paper

Using the Walden Library

The mental health field has been my primary area of interest in my professional roles as a nurse. Salamanca-Buentello et al (2020) present an ingeniously put-together discussion on the social, ethical, and cultural dimensions of mental health screening among adolescents and children in developing nations. In most jurisdictions, mental health and psychiatry has been sidelined from the mainstream health care industry (Wainberg et al., 2017). I accessed this article through the PubMed database (PubMed, n.d.). PubMed works closely with the MEDLINE archive to enhance access to academic resources. The lack of auto-filled user data as part of the navigation features in the database rendered the use of the platform quite difficult. Auto-suggestion considers the use of end-user search terms, keywords, etc. The PubMed database has a wide variety of peer-reviewed academic resources and for this reason, it would be useful to my colleagues. The mental health field needs more providers and awareness as it is sidelined. MEDLINE database definitely has a more advanced search. It would benefit the student if they were looking for something specific to find any article, but it looks quite involved. “MEDLINE is a project that oversees the selection of NLM-approved journals. MEDLINE is the main part of PubMed, an online, searchable, database of research literature in the biomedical and life sciences.”(MedlinePlus and MEDLINE/PubMed, 2021) They do work together but I do agree PubMed is easier. I personally like the Walden University journal and articles tab within the library.(Publications: Journals & Articles, 2020) It’s a lot simpler than Medline and PubMed to me. But writing and research is not my strongest subject.

Mental health is an interesting field with so much room for exploration as there are so many components to psychiatric care. Especially during COVID pandemic, I imagine there are endless articles regarding increased mental health needs. A cross sectional study comparing cancer patients’ mental health pre and post covid pandemic revealed increased mental health burden specifically from increased anxiety and depression (Bauerle, Musche, Schmidt, Schweda, Fink, Weismuller, Koehler, Herrmann, Tewes, Schadendorf, Skoda, & Tuefel; 2021).  This is not surprising as social isolation and loss of loved ones from infection are contributing factors. I noticed you chose databases like medline and pubmed for searching articles.  I decided to use CINAHL plus with full text.  I checked boolean/phrase, full text, and peer reviewed articles in between the years 2013-2020, which revealed over 20,000 articles.   To narrow down the search, I added the word covid and narrowed the search down to 29 articles. Searching medline was a challenge for me since I was not able to locate many PDF’s of the entire article that CINAHL provides.  I found this tool useful for finding specific topics and filtering in certain qualities of an article. Journal databases do not differentiate whether the articles are credible (Payne, 2013).  The article further explains the benefits of implementing shepardizing, a process used in legal research databases to track whether articles are credible, in healthcare databases.  I think this method would be useful for health care.  As a student, I find myself sifting through many articles and reading the details of it to see if it has quality content.  This method could help eliminate the hassle.  NURS 6002 Week 4: Scholarship and Nursing Practice Paper

PubMed is a great resource for peer-reviewed articles and it is very accessible at the Library’s Find @ Walden service. It does not only provide free access to full text literature but also to the many journal articles that are still in-process, NIH-funded research projects, selected articles from PubMed Central, and books from the bookshelves of NCBI. There are two ways in finding full text articles in PubMed, such as through Find @ Walden finder service and Free/open access options from various publishers. In cases when the desired research article is not available in Walden University, students as well as the faculty could request for purchase through the Document Delivery Service. A request link appears at the site if ever the full text of the article is not currently available in the university library, including the link to the DDS policy and Frequently Asked Questions. However, every person must adhere to the 30-article lifetime limit (W University Library, 2020).
