Issues facing the population of the general community

Every community or its patient population is faced with unique challenges which can require coming up with advocacy ideas in resolving the issues. The Health Department of Washington County, Hagerstown, Maryland, Waynesboro PA, was visited to inquire information regarding the issues that affect the population of the general community or the patient population. During this visit, two issues emerged; opioids and lack of knowledge among the senior citizens regarding the Medicare programs. These issues were found to affect the population of the general community significantly. Therefore, the County Department of Health has a crucial role to play in ensuring that appropriate measures are taken against the issues. HA405 Unit 5 Discussion PU Global Healthcare Advocacy Plan

Opioids are a class of drugs that are available both legally and illegally. The drug is legally prescribed in relieving pain while the illegal category of this drug includes and synthetic opioids like fentanyl. The illegal use of opioids has affected the population because of its addictive effect and increased dependency on their use. Even the prolonged use of opioids as pain relievers may lessen their use, making the pain to worsen. Continued use of the drugs makes the body to become dependent, where failure to use the drugs will cause withdrawal symptoms among users. A person becomes addicted and craves for their use, despite their implications on the user.

Similarly, lack of knowledge by the senior citizens on the Medicare service hinders them from benefiting from the program. The government enacted the Medicare program to provide healthcare insurance to American citizens who are not younger than 65 years old. Lacking the relevant knowledge by the senior citizens denies them the opportunity to service or even use their Medicare services for their health needs. The County Department of Health undertakes advocacy measures to address these problems for the affected community.

The advocacy measure against opioids drugs should include setting up friendly knowledge center resources. These resources will be used to sensitize the community on the health consequences of the prolonged use of opioid drugs. The programs will also educate the community members already affected by the drugs on the most efficient ways of discontinuing their use and assist them with recovery from withdrawal symptoms. The elderly population should also be educated and sensitized on Medicare programs. The elderly citizens will be informed on the benefits of using the programs and how they can seek assistance in the event they encounter problems with the program. These measures will help in addressing the issues that are common with the population in the general community.  HA405 Unit 5 Discussion PU Global Healthcare Advocacy Plan
