Paper Outline

Paper Topic: Social Media and its Effects On Children’s Psychology

Introduction Possible ideas for the introduction

There has been an increase in penetration of technology within the current society which has laid an effective platform for an increase in social media use within the modern societies, including among children. According to Statista, some of the most widely used social media platforms used by children include Instagram, snapchat, Facebook, and Twitter (Statista, 2022). However, the increase in social media use is associated with several adverse impacts on children including development of psychiatric disorders which are carried on to adolescence (Cataldo et al., 2021). This paper analyzes some of the psychiatric disorders associated with use of social media among children.

Thesis Statement: Social media has adverse impacts with on the psychology of children which can affect their mental wellbeing and cognitive development.

Main Point: Social media use is associated with depressive symptoms and mood disorders

Examples/Details/Explanations:

  1. Passive use of social media where by one browses through comments and news is associated with aggravated depressive symptoms since it makes children experience a reduced sense of belonging (Cataldo et al., 2021).
  2. Among younger people, social media use is commonly associated with increased feeling of emotional loneliness (Bonkaksen et al., 2021).
  3. Loneliness is associated with an increased risk of depression (Wang et al., 2021).

Main Point: Social media use among children is also associated with increased risks of anxiety.

Examples/Details/Explanations:

  1. Cyberbullying is commonly associated with an increased risk of developing anxiety and psychological distress.
  2. Time spent on social media was directly correlated with the likelihood of developing anxiety and other psychological challenges (Keles et al., 2019).
  3. Increased use of social media among children is associated with an increase in anxiety as a result of negative experiences such as an increased propensity for comparison among children.

Main Point:  Too much screen time causes sleep issues like insomnia.

Examples/Details/Explanations:

  1. According to Pirdehghan et al. (2021), social media use is linked with sleep disturbance among adolescents.
  2. Sleep disturbance is a precursor of most psychological disorders including depression and anxiety disorders (Franceschini et al., 2020).
  3. Thus, sleep disturbance is closely associated with an increased risk of poor mental health among children and adolescents by acting as a gateway for other psychological disorders.

Conclusion Reworded Thesis

  1. Social media use is associated with adverse psychological impacts on children
  2. Common psychological impacts include depression, anxiety, and loneliness.
  • Psychological issues perpetrated by adverse online experiences including bullying.

Food Desert

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) (2012) defines “food deserts” where people have limited access to a variety of healthy and affordable food, are commonly households with low incomes, inadequate access to transportation, and a limited number of food retailers providing fresh produce and healthy groceries for affordable prices tracts tend to have smaller populations, higher rates of abandoned or vacant homes, and residents who have lower levels of education, lower incomes, and higher unemployment.

History of Waianae

The U. S Census (2021) demonstrates a correlation between higher poverty rates and food deserts, like in Waianae Hawaii. Here on Oahu, it is known as the “forgotten coast.” The history of Waianae was that it was a Native Hawaiian fishing village. Soon after Westernization started it was used for sugar cane plantations. Once WWII started, the plantations were closed, the Federal government took over much of the land and no industry was ever reestablished in this community (REAL, 2021).

Pros and Cons

The pros is that it is a tight knit community filled with local families that support one another and carry on with many Native Hawaiian traditions. The land is undeveloped and there are no large tourist hotels.

The cons is that the people are disadvantaged due to transportation, access to food, healthcare and have to travel longer distances into other communities to work.

Notes about the pictures:

There are not any Dollar Stores in Hawaii. Locals in this community use Longs Drugs as a “dollar store”

Restaurants are all focused on cheap, unhealthy food options.

Epidemiology and Public Health Discussion

The Food Sections in the Dollar Stores

The stores are beautiful, and I have realized that the price tags of items are cheap. Every item costs less than a dollar and others one dollar. The stores have several supplies, and the food section has chunky foods. The other store has food supplies that are imported from overseas. In the first store I visited, I learned that it has some benefits and demerits in the community. The food was cheap, and most of them contained sugars thus, the families with lower incomes dominated the store because it had a lot of people, especially women. This store feels the requirement because it provides the American Dream to low-income customers for a dollar a day. The store also establishes a sense of profusion by filling its store with several products set on the shelves with cheap price tags (Chenarides et al., 2021). Consumers also make more intelligent decisions by shopping in the store. I also found out that the customers find shopping in the store rewarding.

However, the store has a disadvantage to the community because it complicates it. The price tags on the shelves are low, meaning that it targets the neighborhoods with the low-income community, especially the society of Black individuals, thus discouraging the healthy eating options, especially the groceries. This also contributes to the economic anguish because it eliminates the local jobs. The location of these stores is not in the city but the rural town. In my view, the stores develop faster because it has a lot of consumers, and their unchecked development harms the community. The groceries and the local retail in the area did not have the buyers meaning that the store is the most significant competitor to these groceries even though it does not offer any.

The other store had other items apart from household items, toys, and fast-food products. In the food section, it provided frozen meat and fresh produces. It had several choices. The store had a lesser quantity of food desert, and several individuals from the local community were employed in the store. I also observed that the consumers were free to bargain from the store. This offered the store a higher rating. I learned that the store engages positively with the local community, and it has a community support concept that caters to charitable contributions.

Despite the great offers in the store, it has some disadvantages. I learned that the store was not good for the society it was located in. Society was already struggling to inspire the development of grocery store which offers healthy and fresh produce. Accessing fresh items leads to better outcomes for societies (Laska et al., 2018). Even though the store had fewer items of chips and Twinkies, it was a competitor of the grocery. It sells the fresh produce offered in the groceries; thus, the groceries lack a market for the products thus having a minor incentive to develop in the community.

Other products on the store shelves were expired, and other merchandises were defective. The store also increases segregation, and the products offered are of low quality. The store employs individuals in the local community, and it does not pay them well. In my view, the store’s growth is due to poor economic circumstances. The store has an unjust advantage over the local groceries, thus eliminating going to the grocery store. This initiates the competition in the community. The community also becomes less appealing because property values drop because the people with greater incomes leave the society.

Family Dollar vs. Walmart

At the Family Dollar store I visited, shoppers can find almost everything they need, from household products to everyday groceries in small sizes. For instance, in the food section, various foods were displayed, including but not limited to cereal, produce, cookies, ice creams, and soups. I noticed that the selection of brands was limited. Still, items were more affordable to the community than at the Walmart store located about one mile away within the same neighborhood.

Although Family Dollar had a fewer variety of products, there were less expensive than the Walmart store. As far as sizes, Family Dollar offers smaller sizes, which are more convenient for people shopping for smaller families or single-use, e.g., Campbell soup for single-use, amongst many other products. Family Dollar store’s brand was also cheaper than Walmart’s brand. Overall, small stores such as Family Dollar not only benefit families with low-income but are also convenient for small families. The family Dollar store I visited is strategically located to increase access to low-income communities.

On the other hand, the Walmart store has more healthy choices, i.e., fruits, vegetables, and other nutritious groceries. The main disadvantages of Family Dollar stores are that they offer low-quality, unhealthy foods (Schwartz, 2020). According to Caspi et al. (2017), purchases at small/non-traditional food stores tend to have poor nutritional quality and have been associated with poor health outcomes, including increased risk of obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and many other health conditions.

Negotiation
Susie Smith, a nurse manager of a 77-bed orthopedic unit, is trying to get the pharmacy to deliver medications earlier in the morning. The clinical nurses are unable to schedule procedures in a timely manner, complete all required treatments, and medicate clients on time because of the late pharmacy delivery. Nurse Smith has scheduled meetings with the pharmacy manager. She has determined the exact time required for timely delivery to the unit and for proper client medication delivery. After brainstorming to identify options, she has decided that she will not back down on her demand that the medications be delivered earlier. When Nurse Smith meets with the pharmacy manager, she clearly states the problem and asks for input from his perspective. The pharmacy manager tells Nurse Smith that he cannot change the time schedule because he will upset his workers and their organization. Nurse Smith empathizes with him but reiterates that for quality care, it is essential to administer medications in a timely fashion. Nurse Smith offers to work with him in analyzing delivery times to help develop a different schedule that meets everyone’s needs. The pharmacy manager declines and tells her that it is her problem, not his. What should Nurse Smith do?

  1. What are the three forms of communication often used when two sides seek to reach an agreement? Which of those is being used here?
  2. A patient in the orthopedic unit suffers a significant setback in his recovery when he cannot function properly during physical therapy because his pain medications were not available at the right time to enable him to participate pain-free. The physicians on the orthopedic unit speak out in support of the patients’ needs to receive medications in a timely fashion. As a result, a small task group is made up of Nurse Smith, the pharmacy manager, and two staff members from both departments. Because she was the one who tried to spearhead this change, Nurse Smith is made the group leader. Not wanting to alienate the already defensive pharmacy team members, she decides she will only use an empowering style of leadership. Do you agree with her?

Initial Post Instructions

For the initial post, respond to one of the following options, and label the beginning of your post indicating either Option 1 or Option 2:

Option 1: The framers of the Constitution were concerned that everyday citizens would not be able to understand or comprehend the makings of our government. They felt that everyday citizens were uninformed and did not care what was going on in our government. Even today we see where citizens are interested in government affairs seemingly only if our country is in turmoil such as unemployment, recessions, civil unrest, etc. Do you agree with this assessment? Are we uninformed? Do we wait till a crisis happens to voice our opinions?

Option 2: Many experts see the media as biased and more like infotainment. In fact, many people have turned to social networks as an outlet for news instead of CBS, NBC, FOX, CNN and other news stations. Do you see this as an issue? Do you see the news as biased or unbiased? Should there be more restrictions on the news stations?

Be sure to make connections between your ideas and conclusions and the research, concepts, terms, and theory we are discussing this week.

 Student Example

Option 2

As we learned in week two’s lesson, news media has a “huge impact of public opinion and political behavior” (Chamberlain, 2022). I do agree with the experts and feel that the news can be biased. This is an issue because the people deserve to get the story without things being left out or without options. When the news does this it is called sharing politics. They leave out parts or explain something in a way that leans towards their political side.  Everyone had their own options and working at a certain station could have their own politics involved as to what view they want to have on a piece of news. Mastrine gives a great example, “Our team noted that NPR does not give lots of coverage to current hot-button issues frequently seen in coverage on the Right — such as free speech, abortion, or the Second Amendment — and in that same vein, does not give lots of coverage to hot-button issues often covered by the Left — economic inequality, climate change, or social justice initiatives” (year page). This example is what I feel we all already know. Different media outlets have different approaches and views on how they feel about things. I think the news should be given with as many facts as possible leaving out opinions or have two opposing views review the same story. A lot of times when I am interested in a story, I go to different news outlets to hear different views on the same topic. I do not know about the restrictions that can be enforced with news, but I think people generally know which station has what political view, so they listen or watch the stations they agree with more. To have a well-rounded knowledge base when something interests me, I look at the story from as many different sources that I can find to help get a rounded view. I am then able to decipher through the opinions and facts to have my own view. It would be nice to have a news station that reports the same story with different views back-to-back so you do not have to rewatch the same news story just to try and figure out fact verse opinion and make sure nothing was left out of one news story compared to the other.

Workplace Environment Assessment

Workplace Environment Assessment

The safety of the work environment remains a crucial central area that the management is required to focus on to ensure that both clients and the employees are safe and healthy. Safety measures and reporting are some of the criteria used for evaluating the organization and scoring the organization’s performance in terms of quality services and safety to employees (Badri et al., 2018). The purpose of this summary goals is to provide a summary of the outcomes of the work environment assessment earlier complete, a literature review by giving a brief explanation of the theory of concept presented in the articles selected, and evidence-based strategies that can be used to create high-performance interprofessional teams.

Work Environment Assessment

Based on the outcomes from the work environment assessment that was completed on the workplace, the overall civility score was 55, indicating that the workplace was unhealthy. The two and most surprising things about the results were that the workplace does not have a positive environment as it was previously thought. There is a considerable gap between the leadership and the rest of the workers concerning the decision-making processes. The single idea that I believed before the performance of the assessment and was confirmed is the workload of the employees, which is unfairly distributed and the majority of the workers being overworked (Clark, 2015). Therefore, based on the health and the civility of the workplace, the outcomes of the workplace assessment indicate that the workplace is unhealthy and has a lower level of civility.

Reviewing the Literature

The model or theory presented by the selected article is the DESC model. This model is essential in structuring the civility conversation. T is based on the Team-STEPPs, which is an evidence-based teamwork system used to improve the communication and the skills of the team (Griffin & Clark, 2014). This, in turn, leads to improved safety and healthcare quality. The model works effectively with the cognitive rehearsal to address particular incivility cases.

The selected theory is related to the results of the work environment assessment. The results from the work environment assessment show that the overall civility score was 55. This reveals the unhealthy status of the workplace, hence needs further improvement. The model plays an essential role in addressing the incivility evident in this organization. This can be achieved when the staff and the management work as a team, as supported by this model. Working as a team is an essential intervention in ensuring that both parties understand one another and share the success and the challenges encountered in dealing with organizational safety (Clark, 2015). Since the model is based on the Team-STEPPS, it makes it easier for the management and the staff to improve their skills and communication, which leads to the overall enhancement of the safety and quality of care in the organization. With effective implementation of the model, there will be an improvement in the overall civility score hence an improvement in the health and safety status of the workplace.

The DESC model can improve organizational health and stronger work teams successfully. The use of the model makes it possible to address the uncivil encounter within the organization. It promotes critical conversation with the uncivil colleague hence allowing the staff and management to move forward as a team (Clark, 2015). The model or theory is vital since it makes it possible to have a perfectly prepared team for the conversation whereby each member speaks with confidence and uses respectful expressions. This critical approach ensures an end to the silence that is considered the essential characteristic of incivility.

The encounter with incivility is made more effective by using the model. Ensuring that the staff and the management perfectly understand the tools in the DESC model makes it possible to encounter incivility as a team. The model makes it possible for each member to speak confidently and use respectful expressions (Clark, 2015). This gives the members an opportunity of describing and expresses their concerns to the management and propose alternative approaches that can be adopted to improve the safety and health of the workplace.

Evidence-Based Strategies to create High-Performance Interprofessional Teams

It is essential to ensure that the issues that affect the score of the work environment are addressed ideally. To achieve this process, it is necessary to have excellent strategies that assist both staff and management in dealing with the issue of incivility in the work environment. One of the approaches is to ensure an effective communication process within the organization (Andriani et al., 2018). This intervention is essential in providing that both parties are involved in addressing conflict in the negotiation process to ensure that the shortcomings in the work environment are dealt with accordingly (Clark, 2015). Effective communication is also helping in providing that there is an effective problem-solving process since members consult each other and arrive at an effective solution.

The other strategy is to ensure that there is a culture of collaboration amongst the members. The collaboration process is essential since it allows the members to synthesize their unique strengths brought by each member to the workplace. This approach makes it possible to create a workplace a civil one (Clark, 2015). Therefore, the staff and the management will always focus on the higher purposes, i.e., providing safe, effective patient care and engaging in respectful communication.

It is also essential to improve the successful practices revealed in the workplace environment. Based on the assessment, there was a gap between the leadership and the employees, especially in terms of decision-making. The other issue is the staff’s workload that is unfairly distributed and some of the workers being overworked. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that all the team in the organization is involved in the decision-making process (Clark, 2015). It is also necessary to ensure that the staff is provided with feedback on the successes and the areas that need improvement in terms of the safety and health of the work environment. The other approach is for the organization to ensure an increase in the number of staff since it appears the few available employees are overworked.

Summary or Conclusion

The personal assessment of the workplace indicates incivility based on a civility score of 55. This is a clear indication that the workplace has an unhealthy working environment characterized by the more significant gap between the leadership and the employees in decision-making processes and the workload that the workers experience. Dealing with these issues requires adopting the DESC model that supports effective communication processes that support the civility conversation between the team members (Clark & Ritter, 2018). It also supports a collaborative approach that leads to the exploitation of the unique strengths brought by the members and supports a respectful expression by the members. The model is also essential in helping conflict negotiation, and problem-solving promote the safety and health of both patients and providers.
