Reflect on how nurses can disseminate findings from evidence-based practice research.

Creating a Culture of Evidence-Based Practice

An abundance of evidence can be found on almost any medical issue or health topic. Often, the availability of information is not the concern, but rather nurses struggle with how to convey the evidence to others and change practices to better reflect the evidence. Deep-rooted organizational cultures and policies can make some resistant to change, even to changes that can vastly improve the quality, effectiveness, and efficiency of health care. However, there are many strategies that nurses can employ to bring about changes to practice.

In this Discussion, you focus on how to create an organizational culture that supports evidence-based practice.

To prepare:

  • Review the information in this week’s Learning Resources. Examine the various suggestions for promoting an organizational culture that embraces the use of EBP.
  • Reflect on your own hospital’s (or one in which you have worked) support of evidence-based practice. Examine how culture and policies impact the adoption of changes to practice based on evidence. What barriers exist?
  • Consider the models and suggestions for promoting evidence-based practice featured in this week’s Learning Resources. Identify models and suggestions that would work well in your hospital.
  • Reflect on the significance of evidence-based practice (EBP) in health care. What responsibility do nurses have to promote EBP and change practices to better reflect evidence and research findings?
  • Reflect on how nurses can disseminate findings from evidence-based practice research.

How is the training of a professional herbalist similar to that of a Western physician?

Herbalism

Herbalists are specialized CAM practitioners who accumulate extensive knowledge of botanical sources and their proper applications. Professional herbalists maintain a distinct status, undergoing rigorous training as apprentices and gaining immense experience in identifying and preparing organic treatments. Herbalism, as with any healing practice, must observe the impact of treatment on specialized groups.

Based on the above statements, answer the following questions:

· How is the training of a professional herbalist similar to that of a Western physician?

· What are the differences between allopathic pharmacists and professional herbalists?

· Herbalism is sometimes cited as the precursor to modern pharmacy. Is this statement accurate? Justify.

· What is a potential danger of the lack of communication between herbalists and allopathic physicians concerning mutual patient safety?

· What caveats must exist when treating pregnant or breast-feeding women with herbal therapies?

· Parents may feel that herbal medicine is a safer remedy for their children. Is this supported by the herbalists and CAM practitioners?

· Why is herb use for the elderly a particularly important point of discussion for patients and practitioners?

· Have you ever experienced an allergy to a particular plant? How do such allergic reactions factor into herbal therapy practice?

How can personal health record systems and electronic health systems contribute to advancing the role of Consumer Health Informatics ?

does hand washing and appropriate staff dressing among the surgical ward nurses reduce cross infection during patient management?

Course Project: Part 3—Translating Evidence Into Practice

In Part 3 of the Course Project, you consider how the evidence you gathered during Part 2 can be translated into nursing practice.

Now that you have located available research on your PICOT question, you will examine what the research indicates about nursing practices. Connecting research evidence and findings to actual decisions and tasks that nurses complete in their daily practice is essentially what evidence-based practice is all about. This final component of the Course Project asks you to translate the evidence and data from your literature review into authentic practices that can be adopted to improve health care outcomes. In addition, you will also consider possible methods and strategies for disseminating evidence-based practices to your colleagues and to the broader health care field.

To prepare:

  • Consider Parts 1 and 2 of your Course Project. How does the research address your PICOT question? PLEASE REFER TO FILES ATTACHED BELOW
  • With your PICOT question in mind, identify at least one nursing practice that is supported by the evidence in two or more of the articles from your literature review. Consider what the evidence indicates about how this practice contributes to better outcomes.
  • Explore possible consequences of failing to adopt the evidence-based practice that you identified.
  • Consider how you would disseminate information about this evidence-based practice throughout your organization or practice setting. How would you communicate the importance of the practice?

    To complete:

    In a 3- to 4-page paper:

    1) Restate your PICOT question and its significance to nursing practice. My PICOT question is: does hand washing and appropriate staff dressing among the surgical ward nurses reduce cross infection during patient management?

    2) Summarize the findings from the articles you selected for your literature review. Describe at least one nursing practice that is supported by the evidence in the articles. Justify your response with specific references to at least 2 of the articles. Please refer to the articles below:

3) Explain how the evidence-based practice that you identified contributes to better outcomes. In addition, identify potential negative outcomes that could result from failing to use the evidence-based practice.

4) Outline the strategy for disseminating the evidence-based practice that you identified throughout your practice setting. Explain how you would communicate the importance of the practice to your colleagues. Describe how you would move from disseminating the information to implementing the evidence-based practice within your organization. How would you address concerns and opposition to the change in practice?

This part of the Course Project should be combined with the other two components of the Course Project and turned in as your Portfolio Assignment for this course.

Note:  In addition, include a 1-page summary of your project

how do you use health information technology to locate evidence-based practices

Using Health Information Technology as a Source of Evidence-Based Practice

Using Health Information Technology as a Source of Evidence-Based Practice

Before the digital revolution, health information technology supplied very limited support for evidence-based practice. If nurses wanted to be informed about cutting-edge research, their best bet was to either subscribe to leading journals or make periodic trips to the library. With the establishment of research databases, however, nurses became empowered to learn about and facilitate interdisciplinary and translational research. Databases are just one example of how health information technology supports evidence-based practice.

To prepare:

Read the following scenario from the text (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2012, p. 482):

Twelve-hour shifts are problematic for patient and nurse safety, and yet hospitals continue to keep the 12-hour shift schedule. In 2004, the Institute of Medicine (Board on Health Care Services & Institute of Medicine, 2004) published a report that referred to studies as early as 1988 that discussed the negative effects of rotating shifts on intervention accuracy. Workers with 12-hour shifts realized more fatigue than workers on 8-hour shifts. In another study done in Turkey by Ilhan, Durukan, Aras, Turkcuoglu, and Aygun (2006), factors relating to increased risk for injury were age of 24 or less, less than 4 years of nursing experience, working in the surgical intensive care units, and working for more than 8 hours.

Consider how the resources identified in the scenario above could influence an organization’s practice.

Select an issue in your practice that is of concern to you (my area of practice area of concern is the nursing shortage, we often have to work short in my hospital which creates many issues). Using health information technology, locate at least three evidence-based practice resources that address your concern and that could possibly inform further action.

post a description of your practice concern. Outline how you used health information technology to locate evidence-based practices that address this concern. Cite and include insights from the resources. Analyze how health information technology supports evidence-based practice.

What technologies or infrastructure are necessary for the successful practice of telemedicine?

Telemedicine: Benefits and Challanges

Telemedicine can be extremely beneficial for people living in isolated regions and is currently being applied in virtually all medical domains. To address major health issues related to affordability, access, and quality of care, healthcare providers need to consider telemedicine as a reliable option when access to traditional medicine is difficult and out of reach. Healthcare providers, however, must consider legal and ethical issues when planning, designing, and implementing telemedicine. Key among these issues are those of patient confidentiality, privacy, data security, and transmission.

  • How does telemedicine differ from the traditional medicine?
  • What are other legal or ethical issues involved in telemedicine?
  • Which of these issues, in your opinion, will be the most difficult to address?
  • What technologies or infrastructure are necessary for the successful practice of telemedicine?
  • What obstacles can prevent healthcare providers from seeing telemedicine as a reliable option, even when access to traditional medicine is difficult or out of reach?

Drawing on course readings or outside scholarly sources, support your answer with references, examples, and clear rationales.
