What other basic rights of an individual may be compromised in times of an emergency?

Rights and Duties during Emergencies

Consider the following scenarios related to interoperability and its impact on emergency preparedness. Utilize your course textbook and assigned readings as well as search the South University Online Library or the Internet to answer the questions that follow each scenario.

Scenario 1

One of the primary goals of the public health system is to protect the general public. The citizens of the United States enjoy specific freedom and basic rights guaranteed by the Constitution. However, in an emergency situation, it is possible that specific rights such as the right to confidentiality of an individual may be compromised in an effort to protect the public.

Research the South University Online Library or the Internet for an article involving quarantining an individual. Based on your research, answer the following questions regarding the above scenario:

· What occurred to warrant the quarantine? Was this justified?

· Does the need to protect the public outweigh an individual’s right to confidentiality? Why or why not?

· What other basic rights of an individual may be compromised in times of an emergency?

Scenario 2

A successful response to an emergency situation often involves collaboration with other agencies in the community and the government. Imagine you are the director of the local health department. You have just received a call about a suspected outbreak of Ebola hemorrhagic fever in the community.

On the basis of your understanding of the topic of “collaboration with agencies and the government” and the above scenario, answer the following questions:

· How would you put your bioterrorism preparedness plan into action? Which agencies will be involved in your plan and why?

· Would the agencies involved be different in case there was a natural disaster such as an earthquake? Why or why not?

Consider strategies for educating patients and families on the treatment and management of the hematologic or metabolic disorder.

Diagnosis and Management of Hematologic and Metabolic Disorders

Case Study 2:

Jimmy is a 3-year-old “picky” eater according to his mother. He refuses to eat anything but waffles for breakfast and macaroni and cheese or chicken nuggets for lunch and dinner. He will eat apples and bananas but refuses all vegetables except corn. After a normal physical examination, you obtained blood testing that revealed the hemoglobin is 11.4 mg/dl and his hematocrit is 30% (both obtained by venipuncture). The CBC revealed microcytic hypochromic RBCs.

To prepare:

•Review “Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders” and “Hematologic Disorders” in the Burns et al. text

•Review and  Analyze the patient information.

•Consider a differential diagnosis for the patient in the case study you selected. Think about the most likely diagnosis for the patient.

•Think about a treatment and management plan for the patient. Be sure to consider appropriate dosages for any recommended pharmacologic and/or non-pharmacologic treatments.

•Consider strategies for educating patients and families on the treatment and management of the hematologic or metabolic disorder.

TO COMPLETE

POST   1 TO 2 PAGES DISCUSSION PAPER ON :

1.An explanation of the differential diagnosis for the patient in the case study you selected.

2. Explain which is the most likely diagnosis for the patient and why.

3. Include an explanation of unique characteristics of the disorder you identified as the primary diagnosis.

4. Then, explain a treatment and management plan for the patient, including appropriate dosages for any recommended treatments.

5. Finally, explain strategies for educating patients and families on the treatment and management of the hematologic or metabolic disorder.

Why are models of cultural competence important as frameworks for program planning in multicultural populations?

***I got 11 out of 23 correct***

of the different models:

Cultural sensitivity is most important for me- finding out what I know, and how to best take care of people from different cultures in a way that makes them feel most comfortable

Please use this part above in the discussion post ^^^

The Purnell and PEN-3 Models for Cultural Competence

  • Examine your own cultural competence through courses readings and personal reflection. You may want to incorporate the Quality and Culture Quiz, linked in Resources, into your personal reflection. Then, think about what you learned through the Purnell and PEN-3 models of cultural competence. If necessary, review Chapter 6 in your course textbook to ensure that you understand the models.
    • Why are models of cultural competence important as frameworks for program planning in multicultural populations?
    • Is there a model you gravitate to more than another? Explain why or why not.

Your initial posting should be at least 150 words, and you must reference the work of another writer (either as a quotation, paraphrase, or summary) to provide support for your ideas. The source can be the course text, another relevant book, any assigned reading, or an article you find on your own through the Capella University Library. Do you have sea change?

“A Sea-Change for Health Care?”

·                     Sea Change Program is dedicated to transforming the culture of stigma around abortion and other stigmatized reproductive experiences. We conduct social science research and partner with organizations to identify, test, and share practices for reducing reproductive stigmas.  We seek a world that upholds the dignity and humanity of people as they move through their reproductive lives. We work to increase the visibility of marginalized reproductive experiences, strengthen connections between people, reproductive health care providers, and their communities, and support the integration of abortion and other reproductive health services into mainstream health care.

1         We engage in projects that highlight innovation by trying new ideas, taking risks, and measuring success.

2         We bring a spirit of collaboration, recognizing that working with individuals, communities, and organizations helps us to communicate a shared vision, learn from each other, and garner the resources and influence we need to change the world.

3         We believe in transparency, seeking to make our work understandable, accessible and useful.

4         We emphasize learning through our research, continuing education, and communication with our colleagues and partners.

5         Finally, we value intersectionality as an approach to viewing the complex matrix of oppression and privilege in people’s lives, and use this analysis to inform our research questions, interventions, and organizational partnerships (“Sea Change Program”, 2016).

What are some red flags that signal incompatibility between the culture and organization?

Believe it or not! Quality does not happen by accident. We must make an intentional effort to measure, assess, and improve performance. Not only must an organization’s board of trustees and senior management be committed to quality but they also must create a framework for accomplishing quality activities and an environment that supports continuous improvement. Lead by example! Active and personal board involvement in quality and patient safety oversight contributes to building a high-performing healthcare organization. In our organization we are striving to become a Highly Reliable Organization. How are you becoming a HRO?

  • While there is no “correct” culture. A culture that works in one organization may not work in another. A culture’s suitability depends on how well it supports the organization’s quality management goals. Is the culture at your facility undermining quality improvement efforts? What are some red flags that signal incompatibility between the culture and organization?

address disruptive behavior of people working at all levels of the organization.

In 2009, The Joint Commission revised its leadership standards to reflect the need for a culture that supports quality performance. Leaders in accredited organizations are expected to “create and maintain a culture of safety and quality throughout the organization” (Schyve 2009, 20). Compliance with these standards requires leaders to

?        demonstrate their commitment to quality,

?        set quality expectations for those who work in the organization,

?        evaluate the culture on a regular basis,

?        encourage teamwork and create opportunities for this collaboration to flourish, and

?        address disruptive behavior of people working at all levels of the organization.

Is your organization meeting TJC standard? If so address the bullets above and tell us how your facility is meeting the standards one by one. If not; what would you implement to address the bullets above?

How would the use of the Roy Adaptation Model assist the nurse in planning the continuation of care for Sgt. Johns?

Part One:

Neuman Systems Models is a flexible and adaptive model which can be applied to various aspects of nursing disciplines. Today, the model is used globally as a nursing conceptual model to guide curriculum development, research studies, and clinical practice in the full array of health-care disciplines.

Define a nursing practice area where you could apply Neuman Systems Model. What patient population would you target? How would you use this model to guide best practices? How would nursing outcomes be determined? Use at least one current research article related to your practice example.

Your initial posting should be at least 400 words in length and utilize at least one scholarly source other than the textbook.

Part Two:

Create a Power Point Presentation to discuss the following

Sgt. Eddie Johns leaned back against the chair in the outpatient orthopedic clinic. His head was killing him! He wasn’t sure which was worse, the “morning after” headache or not being able to sleep at night. At least when he had a few beers under his belt so he could catch a few hours of sleep. It had been like this since he was air evacuated back stateside from Afghanistan after the roadside bomb went off. He was thankful that he had only broken his leg in a couple of places and gotten a bad bump on the head. They called that traumatic brain injury but he didn’t know what that was and really didn’t believe them anyway. He was still thinking just fine. His friend Joe wasn’t so lucky! How was Joe going to learn to walk on those artificial legs? He was still in the hospital in Washington, DC. That was pretty far from his home. Eddie wished he could visit Joe. They had been in the same platoon for 9 months. But, Eddie was glad that he had been able to come back to his own home town for outpatient treatment. It took an hour to get here but at least he could see his girl almost every day. Sure he had moved back in with his mom but it was easier to have someone to help him get around and cook for him. It was a bummer that he couldn’t work right now. He guessed it didn’t matter much since he really didn’t have a job to go back to. He had been replaced at the plant. They said they would find something for him to do once he could get around more easily. Eddie sure hoped the doc would take the pins out of his leg today and give him a clearance to work.

  • How would the use of the Roy Adaptation Model assist the nurse in planning the continuation of care for Sgt. Johns?
  • Describe the influence of Roy’s Theory in guiding the nurse’s actions in promoting Sgt. Johns adjusted self-concept.
  • From the perspective of the Roy Adaptation Model, why is it important for the nurse to listen to Sgt. Johns’ “story” in his own words and not just base her interactions on information from the chart, fellow colleagues, or his family?
  • Based on Neuman System’s Model, identify at least 4 stressors from the case study. Create a plan of care based on Neuman Systems Model for Sgt. Johns.

PLEASE DO NOT FORGET TO CITE WORK ON EACH SLIDE OR OUTSIDE SOURCE. Your PowerPoint should include at least 1 outside reference and your book. The presentation should be 10 to 15 slides in length.
