Controversy Associated with Dissociative Disorders Essay Assignment
Dissociative disorders are a group of conditions characterized by disruptions or gaps in consciousness, memory, identity, and perception. In most cases, people experience unhealthy and unwanted escapes from reality, impacting their ability to manage routine activities and enhance the desired quality and independent lives (Saxena et al., 2023). Although these conditions occur as a result of mental and psychological disturbance, they are often associated with controversy due to the diagnostic validity and skepticism associated with the prevalence and the nature of these conditions, such as dissociative identity disorder (DID). Sometimes, these conditions are misinterpreted or overdiagnosed as organic conditions. In addition, these conditions are also associated with misconceptions, cultural norms, beliefs, and practices related to diverse communities and populations (Chien & Fung, 2022)Controversy Associated with Dissociative Disorders Essay Assignment. For instance, some communities associate these disorders with spiritual and cultural factors,. At the same time, some professionals often assume that the occurrence of traumatic events is the precipitating dissociative disorder symptoms, resulting in the need for specialized treatments.
Professional Beliefs about Dissociative Disorders
After working in the mental health and psychiatric department for several years, I have managed patients with dissociative disorders and observed their needs and experiences in the complex clinical environment. My personal and professional beliefs about these disorders are shaped by the current research and evidence-based practices that point to these disorders as complex and challenging to diagnose and manage (Chien & Fung, 2022)Controversy Associated with Dissociative Disorders Essay Assignment. These disorders often arise from failure to apply effective coping mechanisms for the underlying traumatic or stressing issues and activities. Therefore, it may be challenging to diagnose these disorders; most cases are often misdiagnosed. However, I believe that focusing on the unique patient needs and providing trauma-focused healthcare services and stabilization techniques often enhance the healthcare service delivery and management of the underlying individualized needs. In this case, I believe that I have the unique roles in identifying the presenting features and initiating safe, effective, and trauma focused healthcare services that address the unique patient needs.
Strategies for Maintaining Therapeutic Relationships
Maintaining therapeutic relationships with patients with dissociative disorders is often challenging and requires implementation of collaborative and effective strategies that enhance individualized care. Professionals need to establish a rapport with patients, develop trust, and develop a sense of safety. To foster a positive relationship with these particular patients, it is crucial to engage in therapeutic communication, offer reassurance to the patient, and, when addressing the patient’s basic needs, effectively and confidentially (Purcell et al., 2024)Controversy Associated with Dissociative Disorders Essay Assignment. The healthcare provider must also incorporate measures like grounding and self-soothing exercises to strengthen the ability of the patient for managing the disorders and requirements. Thus, education, collaboration, and shared decision-making are critical to building and sustaining therapeutic relationships in this situation.
Ethical and Legal Considerations
Ethical considerations that the nurse practitioner should consider while engaging and handling patients with Dissociative disorders include cultural sensitivity, patient’s rights, and patient autonomy. The provider has to respect and protect the patient’s privacy and confidentiality and implement individualized care with an understanding of patient’s self-determination and choice. The nurse practitioner should also consider the patient preferences and ensure that the service delivery measures reflect this perspective (Boland et al., 2022).In addition, the professionals and stakeholders have the responsibility for risk management to prevent any hazards in the environment (Saxena et al., 2023)Controversy Associated with Dissociative Disorders Essay Assignment. As such, the team should perform a needs analysis, identify the actual needs and deficiencies and decide on the priority health care services which should be delivered to manage the healthcare services. Culturally sensitive care will enable the patient, and the family participate in the decision-making procedures that are related to the management of these requirements and obtaining the appropriate quality healthcare.
