The Role Of Supply And Demand In The Healthcare Economy 2

The Role Of Supply And Demand In The Healthcare Economy

During the COVID-19 pandemic, people saw major disruptions to supply lines throughout the country. Nowhere was this more evident than in the healthcare industry. Among the biggest impacts was the disruption in supply lines related to personal protective equipment (PPE) and patient care needs (e.g., beds, ventilators, and medications). Use your text as a resource to complete the following assignment, as well as one other resource from the library. Please cite your sources.

  • Describe the concept of supply and demand and how it relates to the provision of healthcare.
  • Once the concept of supply and demand has been explained as it relates to healthcare, explain how the pandemic contributed to major shortages of needed supplies and equipment.
  • Imagine yourself as the leader of a provider group of some type (e.g., surgery center, orthopedic group, general practitioner’s office). Indicate some of the supply shortages that your group may see in a similar scenario in the future. How can these be offset or averted?
  • Identify, evaluate, and present a strategy that healthcare leaders can implement to avoid real-world supply chain disruption in the future.

Quality And Safety Gap Analysis

Quality And Safety Gap Analysis

As a nurse leader, you must be able to assess your organization’s ability to deliver safe, high-quality patient care. In so doing, you may be required to perform a gap analysis of a quality or safety issue as the first step in improving outcomes. Failure to meet benchmarks for safe and effective patient care can have reimbursement, regulatory, and legal consequences. Quality And Safety Gap Analysis

This assessment provides an opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to successfully implement changes that improve patient outcomes by:

  • Evaluating the current culture of an organization.
  • Performing an outcome gap analysis.
  • Determining what changes are needed to bridge the gap.
  • Examining current thinking on this topic contained in the literature.

Quality and safety are everyone’s responsibility as a team of interprofessional care delivery partners. Together, we develop policies that support quality and safe care delivery. As part of the interprofessional team, nurses are leaders in care and thus are responsible and accountable for leading and providing safe, quality care.

Health care delivery is structured around evidence-based information. Quality is defined by exploring proven, evidence-based information. After reviewing and defining evidence-based information, the interprofessional team applies this knowledge to assess the organization’s or the practice setting’s ability to provide evidence-based care delivery. When a gap in care is identified, it is important to propose an evidence-based change and to execute a plan for improved care.

CASE STUDY 1

Paloma Hernandez is a 26-year-old Spanish-speaking patient who has been coming to the clinic for the last 2 days in a row complaining of abdominal pain that is getting worse. On the first visit, the staff relied on her younger, bilingual daughter to translate. She was treated with Omeprazole and encouraged to take OTC medication. Today she presents with the same problem. Her daughter states it is the same problem but worse today. DIVERSITY AND HEALTH ASSESSMENTS

May 2012, Alice Randall wrote an article for The New York Times on the cultural factors that encouraged black women to maintain a weight above what is considered healthy. Randall explained—from her observations and her personal experience as a black woman—that many African-American communities and cultures consider women who are overweight to be more beautiful and desirable than women at a healthier weight. As she put it, “many black women are fat because we want to be” (Randall, 2012).

Randall’s statements sparked a great deal of controversy and debate; however, they emphasize an underlying reality in the healthcare field: different populations, cultures, and groups have diverse beliefs and practices that impact their health. Nurses and healthcare professionals should be aware of this reality and adapt their health assessment techniques and recommendations to accommodate diversity.

In this discussion, you will consider different socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors that should be taken into consideration when building a health history for patients with diverse backgrounds.

To prepare:

  • Reflect on your experiences as a nurse and on the information provided in this week’s learning resources on diversity issues in health assessments.
  • By Day 1 of this week, you will be assigned a case study by your instructor. Note: Please see the “Course Announcements” section of the classroom for your case study assignment.
  • Reflect on the specific socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors related to the health of the patient assigned to you. DIVERSITY AND HEALTH ASSESSMENTS
  • Consider how you would build a health history for the patient. What questions would you ask, and how would you frame them to be sensitive to the patient’s background, lifestyle, and culture? Develop five targeted questions you would ask the patient to build his or her health history and assess his or her health risks.
  • Think about the challenges associated with communicating with patients from a variety of specific populations. What strategies can you, as a nurse, employ to be sensitive to different cultural factors while gathering the pertinent information?

Post an explanation of the specific socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors associated with the patient you were assigned. Explain the issues that you would need to be sensitive to when interacting with the patient, and why. Provide at least five targeted questions you would ask the patient to build his or her health history and to assess his or her health risks.

Quality Improvement Initiative Evaluation

Quality Improvement Initiative Evaluation

Imagine you have been asked to prepare and deliver an analysis of an existing QI initiative at your workplace. The QI initiative you choose to analyze should be related to a specific disease, condition, or public health issue of personal or professional interest to you, or you may use the hospice information provided in the Vila Health: Data Analysis activity in this assessment. The purpose of the report is to assess whether the specific quality indicators point to improved patient safety, quality of care, cost and efficiency goals, and other desired metrics. Your target audience is nurses and other health professionals with specializations or interests in your chosen condition, disease, or public health issue. Quality Improvement Initiative Evaluation

  • Evaluate the success of a current QI initiative through recognized benchmarks and outcome measures as required to meet national, state, or accreditation requirements.
    • Identify the core performance measurements related to successful treatment or management of the condition. Quality Improvement Initiative Evaluation
    • Evaluate the impact of the quality indicators on the health care facility.
  • Incorporate interprofessional perspectives related to the success of actions used in the QI initiative as they relate to functionality and outcomes.
  • Recommend additional indicators and protocols to improve and expand the outcomes of a current quality initiative.
  • Ensure your analysis conveys purpose in an appropriate tone and style, incorporating supporting evidence, and adhering to organizational, professional, and scholarly writing standards.

Be sure to address all of the bullet points. You may also want to read the Quality Improvement Initiative Evaluation Scoring Guide to better understand the performance levels that relate to each grading criterion. Ms. Smith: Anorexia/Depression/Anxiety

Ms. Smith is an 85-year-old woman with end-stage cardiac disease in a  home hospice program. She has been very comfortable, not experiencing  any other symptoms, and has been quite functional until the last two  weeks. Her family contacts the home hospice nurse concerning her lack of  appetite, “continual sadness,” and anxiety which they feel is affecting  her ability to function.

During a routine home visit by the hospice nurse, the patient relates that she has no appetite and is quite comfortable just having occasional “snacks” when she pleases. However, her family remains adamant that she requires better nutrition, and they request an IV be inserted. In addition, the family believes Ms. Smith is depressed and “too antsy,” and these contribute to her lack of appetite. Mrs. Smith states that she has had trouble with depression for many years but has always tried to find “the brighter side” to fight off the sadness. She also acknowledges that she becomes anxious when her children come to visit, as they “don’t want to admit I am dying,” she says. She reports that she does not always sleep well at night because she is afraid to die and leave her family behind. She says, “I wish I had raised my children better. If I had, there might not be all of this fighting going on about my care. I wish they would leave me alone, so I can die the way I want to.”

Discussion Questions:

  1. How might the hospice nurse incorporate interdisciplinary care for this patient?
  2. What additional assessments would be needed?
  3. What interventions might be considered?
