For this discussion, you will choose from one of the three “You Decide” case studies included in Case Studies in Abnormal Psychology. The case study you choose for this discussion will also be the case study you will use for your Psychiatric Diagnosis assignment in Week Six.

In your initial post, you will take on the persona of the patient from the case study you have chosen in order to create an initial call to a mental health professional from the patient’s point of view. In order to create your initial call, evaluate the symptoms and presenting problems from the case study, and then determine how the patient would approach the first call.

Create a document that includes a transcript of a call from the patient’s point of view based on the information in the case study including basic personal information and reasons for seeking out psychotherapy. The call may be no more than 5 minutes in length. Once you have created your transcript you will create a screencast recording of the transcript using the patient’s voice. Overview of Assignment: The goal of this assignment will be to demonstrate your understanding and ability to apply developmental theories to various domains of adolescent development, and to summarize current research findings about adolescent development as presented in course content. Students will write a 3-4 page essay applying developmental theories, course content, and scholarly resources to the prompt described below. Students will need to answer the prompts using appropriate developmental theories, course content, and outside scholarly resources. Students will follow APA formatting guidelines for their essay.

Essay Prompt:

In Chapter 10, we examined the way the school context impacts adolescent development. Yet we also discussed how there may be mismatch between the needs of developing adolescents and the instructional design and school climate of many typical middle and high schools. For this essay, you will need to describe how you would design the “ideal middle or high school” that would best meet the developmental needs of adolescents. You can decide if you want to design a middle or high school. For your design, consider how you would structure the physical building, school calendar, daily schedule, course offerings, instructional methods, and classroom management that would best meet the needs of adolescents. You do NOT need to draw a physical design, but instead just describe the design with words.

While you will need to incorporate content from Chapter 10, you will also need to go back and apply content from other chapters throughout the semester that would describe the developmental needs of adolescents, including cognitive, social- emotional, and physical development. You can earn 10 points of extra-credit if you find a peer-reviewed psychology journal article directly related to a specific topic we’ve covered in this class and write a brief 300-word-long paper about the article that addresses the questions listed below. For example, you could use an article from the journal Psychological Science. You must use the PsychINFO database to find articles. The journal article cannot come from a newspaper (e.g., Orlando Sentinel) or mass-circulated magazine (e.g., Time, Newsweek, Psychology Today). Also, the journal article cannot be an article that you were assigned to read for this class (or any other class you are taking with me). Also, the article cannot be one that you used for your Experiment 1, Correlation Project, Experiment 2 or Experiment 3 papers. The rationale for this rule is that you must do something extra in order to earn extra-credit! 🙂

You can repeat this exercise for another article and write a maximum of two papers for a maximum total of 20 points that you would earn if you found two articles and wrote a summary for each one.

Papers must be paraphrased (written in your own words with no direct quotations from the original sources). Also, papers need to be submitted in Microsoft Word format (.doc or .docx).
