This activity examines whether African American males may be prone to higher levels of stress and thus susceptible to high blood pressure. Read the following passage from George Bishop’s Health Psychology (1994) and answer the following discussion questions.

 

Blood Pressure in Black Americans: The Role of John Henryism

John Henry, the legendary black steeldriver, is a symbol of the belief that a person can overcome any obstacle through enough hard work. According to the legend, John Henry was a champion steeldriver (a person who uses steel stake and sledge hammer to make holes for explosives) on the C&O Railroad when he bragged that he could drive more steel than a steam-driven machine being used by a competing contractor Personality Activity 1 Stress. A contest was arranged in which John Henry indeed beat the machine, but afterward died from his efforts (Botkin, 1944). In their work on “John Henryism,” James and his colleagues (James, Hartnett, & Kalsbeek, 1983; James, LaCrois, Kleinbaum, & Strogatz, 1984) draw an analogy between John Henry’s efforts and those of black Americans who have worked to overcome daunting odds in their struggle for economic self-sufficiency. According to this reasoning, the belief that any obstacle can be overcome by hard work and determination can lead to chronic, excessive arousal when the person is continually required to overcome obstacles such as discrimination based on lack of formal education. In turn, this excessive arousal may be one of the factors leading to hypertension among African Americans, particularly those with limited education.

To test this hypothesis, James and his colleagues (James et al., 1983) developed an eight-item scale for John Henryism, including such items as “Once I make up my mind to do something, I stay with it until the job is completely done” and “I feel I am the kind of man who stands up for what he believes in, regardless of the consequences.” This scale was then administered to a group of Southern, working-class black men during an interview in which they answered questions about educational background, life aspirations, and various health issues. In addition, blood pressure measures were obtained. The results showed that men who are high on John Henryism and had fewer than 11 years of education had higher diastolic blood pressure than did those who were either low in John Henryism or had more education Personality Activity 1 Stress

              Another study explored the role of John Henryism in the relationship between occupational stress and blood pressure. The results showed that although black men who perceived themselves as being successful tended to have lower diastolic blood pressure, this was not true for those who were also high in John Henryism. In addition, diastolic blood pressure was particularly high for men who were successful but high in John Henryism and felt that they had been hindered by being black. These data lend support to the hypothesis that hypertension in black American males may, at least partly, be a function of barriers faced by black Americans and beliefs about how those barriers can be overcome.

This assignment will walk you through the steps to create crisis response plans, which is a critical job skill for counselors of children and adolescents. Using the Group Crisis Intervention Template, you will:

· Develop a one-time group crisis intervention plan that will help children or adolescents deal with the loss of classmates.

· Develop a one-time group crisis intervention plan to assist their parents and other concerned community members.

· For each intervention plan, describe how you will adapt these groups so that they are beneficial for individuals from different cultural backgrounds and are inclusive of individuals with exceptionalities.

Counselors who work with children and adolescents rarely work only with children and adolescents! They are often asked to help with prevention efforts, consult with schools or other groups that serve children, educate parents and teachers about children’s mental health needs, and advocate for changes in communities and schools. Therefore, any counselor must understand how these multiple systems operate and must be knowledgeable about the programs and networks that support the mental health of diverse children and adolescents in the community.

For this assignment, you will describe how you would work with diverse individuals and two different constituencies by developing a group crisis intervention proposal for the Middle Valley Consortium. Your proposal is being requested because the community is still reeling from the shocking death of two middle school students, who overdosed on prescription drugs. Your community is diverse, so your crisis groups will include members from several different racial and ethnic backgrounds. Sometimes when counselors have had little exposure to children with exceptionalities, their feelings of pity overwhelm their clinical judgment and their usual counseling approach. Estimating the Benefits and Costs of Your Choices

According to studies of graduates of bachelor-degree programs in psychology, entry-level positions tend to pay relatively little and may be relatively unsatisfying. Although the positions, pay, and reported job satisfaction of psychology majors tend to significantly improve many years after graduation, those who enter the workforce immediately upon graduation risk at least a few years of less-than-satisfactory employment (Landrum & Elison-Bowers, 2009; Rajecki & Borden, 2011).

Although graduate school can be a route to a better paying, more satisfying job, and career, it is quite expensive. A doctoral degree results in most students entering into debt for as much as $75,000 to $200,000 (Stringer, 2016). The median debt incurred for a master’s degree is approximately $25,000 (Kantrowitz, 2011).

Tasks

Using your textbook, the Internet, and the Argosy University online library resources, research possible choices, such as entering the workforce immediately upon graduation, or enrolling in a graduate school. Based on your research, respond to the following:

  • Select one of the options: entering the workforce upon graduation or attending graduate school. For your selected option, identify at least five benefits and at least five risks associated with that choice. For example, if you choose to enter the workforce immediately upon graduation, identify the benefits and risks of doing so.
  • Design a poster illustrating the risks and benefits. Include visual aids, such as clipart, photos, graphs, figures, or tables, to add to the poster’s visual appeal. You can create your poster in Microsoft Word or Microsoft PowerPoint format using the templates provided.
    • If you have chosen to enter the workforce, imagine you are designing the poster for display at a job fair at which you are a recruiter trying to convince new graduates, of undergraduate programs, to work for your organization.
    • If you have chosen to enter graduate school, imagine you are designing the poster for display at a professional conference where you hope to recruit undergraduate seniors to apply to your graduate program.
  • Download and review a copy of either the Microsoft Word poster template, or else the Microsoft PowerPoint poster template.
  • Support your statements with information from academic sources, one which can be your textbook. Be sure to include in-text citations and a reference list visible on the poster, near the bottom or end.
