How may technology be used to overcome resistance to treatment?

Assignment 1: LASA 2—Self-Help Evaluation

The self-help movement has swept the world of substance abuse treatment. A new client may not be aware of any treatment options open to them aside from those of self-help group meetings, such as Alcoholics Anonymous. While self-help groups are not a solution for every client, they have been shown to be useful in some cases.

As future substance abuse counselors, it is important that you explore and be aware of the different self-help groups and what goes on in these group meetings.

Begin this assignment by doing the following:

Attend a self-help group related to substance abuse. There are multiple options including AA Open Meetings, Al-Anon, Women for Sobriety, and so forth. Information is easily accessible on the Internet. Note that some meetings are closed while others are open. At Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), most weekly groups are closed; however, open meetings are held primarily on weekends when all are welcome to attend.

Information for your area can be obtained through “AA Intergroup” at http://aa-intergroup.org/.

Introduce yourself and let folks know that you are a student. Remember to follow the guidelines of confidentiality.

If you are unable to access a twelve-step group because one is not available in your area, either research an online self-help group or research the implications of self-help groups in general including their strengths and weaknesses.

Write a paper about your experience and make sure you cover the following:

  1. Evaluate the self-help group you attended and/or researched. Critique the strengths and weaknesses of self-help groups in terms of their value in the treatment of substance abuse.
  2. Hypothesize what types of clients would be a good match for the group that you attended and/or researched. What types of clients would not be a good match? Consider age, gender, culture, race, sexuality, religion/spirituality, and the severity of substance abuse. Include other evaluation criteria for differential treatment. Explain your reasoning.
  3. Predict how self-help groups are evolving over time. How can technology be used to supplement and/or replace face-to-face support groups?
  4. Appraise the effect on the group experience when involuntary clients are present. Include the effect to treatment, counseling, and collaboration.
  5. Recommend several ways to overcome resistance. How may technology be used to overcome resistance to treatment? Include collaboration issues involved in the treatment of involuntary clients using technology.

Write a paper in Word format and make sure you include a title page and reference page in addition to the 6–8-pages of content. Apply APA 6th edition standards to the format of the paper, and the citation of sources.

Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M5_A1.doc.

By the due date assigned, deliver your assignment to the Submissions Area.

what support mechanisms do you have in place to help you meet your goals?

You have already identified many resources in your network—in this class and outside the university—and within the wider Walden community. Support is best used when you know what you need; it is hard to get support in building a ladder if you do not know what a ladder looks like.

If you have an idea of what a ladder looks like, you can ask for rungs and nails and a hammer. Think of the resources offered by Walden as the rungs and nails for your ladder, but you are the one who must design the ladder. A PDP allows you to design your ladder and identify which supports you need to build it.

Remember that you must help your classmates and colleagues along the way with their ladders too. Think of what you need to give, as well as what you will need to receive, in terms of support and help.

A PDP explains how you, individually, came to the decision to begin your graduate studies, what you envision for yourself and others when you complete the degree, and what objectives or steps you need to define in order to realize your dream and become your previously envisioned “future self.” You will refer to your PDP when you want to check your progress or re-evaluate your goals. It should be motivating and related to the mission of Walden, your mission, and the community of your colleagues. Remember, we are all in this together.

PowerPoint presentations will be used in many of your courses at Walden. This Assignment will also provide an opportunity for you to become familiar with, or become a more advanced user of, PowerPoint as a communication tool.

NOTE: You are strongly encouraged to submit this Assignment as a PowerPoint presentation, but if you are having difficulty with the software, you may submit it as a Word document with sufficient notes to explain each “slide.” Please feel free to contact your Instructor if you need any support with this Assignment.

The PDP should incorporate elements within your specific Program Tab and must address the following:

  1. Where have you been in your life personally and professionally that has brought you to this point? In my life personally I have obtained a Bachelors in Social Work and I have worked in the different mental health fields I have started working in the Criminal Justice field and  I work as a drug and alcohol counselor at a prison,
  2. What is your motivation in choosing this career; why did you choose this profession and aspiration? My motivation in choosing this career is to help  individuals over come their addiction
  3. How do your personal and professional community factor in to the realization of your aspirations—what support mechanisms do you have in place to help you meet your goals?
  4. What are the things you foresee that might get in the way of your plan, and how will you overcome them as well as help others overcome theirs?
  5. Share about your future self. Where do you want to go professionally, and how will you leverage your Walden experience to become this person? What is the best advice you would give yourself now from the point of success when you finish?

Make use of the Notes section within PowerPoint to provide the details of your presentation.

Your presentation should be explicit in its detail about what you plan to do at Walden to meet your personal and professional goals.

Why is it so important for parents to understand and know children’s developmental milestones?

DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONES

One of the measurements that can be used to determine a child’s developmental progression is to compare the development of the child to the typical developmental milestones. Some examples of developmental milestones are when an infant first sits up, crawls, and walks. There are also developmental milestones for  social and emotional development, language/communication development, cognitive development (learning, thinking and problem solving), and physical/movement development.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides some extensive information on developmental milestones for infants and young children. Google the keywords “CDC: Developmental Milestones.” Once you reach the site review the developmental milestones from birth through five years. After reviewing the milestones answer the following questions.

1. What is a developmental milestone? Why is it so important for parents to understand and know children’s developmental milestones?

2. Identify and describe at least three developmental milestones you find most interesting between the ages of 2 months and five years. Explain why you find them the most interesting.

3. Were you surprised by any of the milestones to be achieve at a particular age? If so, which one(s)? If not, why?

At the bottom of Developmental Milestones page, there is a link to Developmental Disabilities (or you can Google: “CDC: Developmental Disabilities”). Go to the Developmental Disabilities homepage, click on “Basics,” review the material, and then answer the following questions.

1. What is a developmental disability? What are the Risk Factors and Causes associated with the occurrence of developmental disabilities?

2. Select one of the “Specific Conditions” (either from the Developmental Disabilities homepage or from the menu on the upper left side of the Basics page). Describe the condition you selected. Why did you select this condition? What is one important concept, idea, theory, etc. you learned about this special condition.

3. Do you believe parents today are adequately educated about developmental milestones and developmental disabilities? If so, explain how they are educated. If not, how might we better educate parents about these issues?

4. What questions has the activity raised for you? What are you interested in researching further? “Nothing” scores a zero.

Your paper will be written in APA format with 12pt Times New Roman, 1 inch margins and including a Title Page and Reference Page. I have included a sample paper for you to download and utilize. Please use the paper as it includes the proper headings, margins, and font type and size.

I’ve provided a grading rubric on the last page.

Justify your answers with appropriate reasoning and research from your textbook and the CDC website. Here are some examples of how to cite your references depending on the pages you use. 20

    Guidelinesfor

explain your implicit ethical decision-making style

Assignment 1: LASA 2: Ethical Profile Paper

Directions:

You are to write an ethical profile paper that recognizes the formative influence of your family, heroes, and personal style on you as an ethical professional. This paper will provide a profile of you in regards to your ethical and professional practice. You will be required to include information on who you are as an ethical professional, how this course has shaped your unique ethical decision-making style, and the areas in which you feel still need further development.

Include the following four sections in your paper:

  1. Ethical Autobiography: First, explain how you think through and determine what is “right” and “wrong” (personally and professionally) in your own daily life. Second, identify four examples of ethical behaviors and explain how your cultural heritage has shaped your values. Third, describe the nature of the four ethical behaviors you see in yourself.
  2. Professional/Ethical Hero: First, identify an ethical “hero,” an individual that has most impressed you and serves as your role model because of their professional/ethical presence (i.e., sensitivity, appropriate boundaries, and respect for privacy, ethical commitment, and ethical courage). Elaborate on his or her ethical characteristics. Discuss how this person can (or does) serve as a role model for others in the helping profession. Second, describe how this “hero” has influenced your value system. Click here to read an article on ethical hero.
  3. Ethical Decision-Making Style: This section will articulate your implicit style in terms of ethical decision making. Although there are specific models that help facilitate ethical decision making, everyone has his or her own unique style. Taking into consideration the ethical decision-making models presented in this course, identify the style that reflects your early and ongoing experiences with moral values and issues that has been influenced and shaped by your parents, relatives, peers, and valued adults in your life, such as a teacher or coach. Use what you have written from your autobiography to supplement this discussion. In summary, explain your implicit ethical decision-making style, including how this course and your cultural heritage have served as influential factors.
  4. Professional and Ethical Development: Ethical development is, for most, a career-long process. In the last section of your paper, please identify at least two areas discussed in this module/course where you feel you would benefit from more development. Lastly, suggest ways in which you can acquire your further development.

Please include information from two or more external scholarly references using APA formatting for all citations.

Your paper should be approximately 6–8 pages in length, be double-spaced, in 12 point, Times New Roman font with normal 1” margins; be written in APA style; and be free of typographical and grammatical errors. It should include a title page with a running head, an abstract, and a reference page.

Save the paper as AU_PSY430_M5_A1_LastName_FirstInitial.doc and submit it to the Submissions Area by the due date assigned.
