An analysis of whether or not the policy meets the needs of the population groups most affected by the policy

Sometimes, during heated discussions and debates about social policy, the underlying reasons for the policy go unnoticed. Advocates and policymakers may become so committed to their perspectives and to winning the debates that they lose focus on the larger context surrounding an issue. The purpose of policy is to improve the lives and well-being of individuals and groups in our society. As you assume the role of a social work policymaker, consider the importance of keeping the needs and experiences of vulnerable populations at the forefront of your mind in your advocacy efforts. This can help to assure effective policy practice.

For this Assignment, you will analyze a state, federal, or global social welfare policy that affects an at-risk, marginalized, oppressed, underrepresented, or over looked group population. Finally, consider the impact of social policy from the perspective of the group you selected.

By Day 7

Assignment (5-7 double-spaced pages, APA format). In addition to a minimum of eight scholarly references, which may include electronic government documents and reputable websites, your paper should include:

A description of the current policy approach for addressing the social issue you selected

A description of the current policy goals for addressing the social issue you selected

A description of the population the current policy approach covers

An explanation of the funding levels for the current policy approach and whether they are sufficient to address the issue

An explanation of how this policy may affect at-risk, marginalized, underrepresented, overlooked, or oppressed populations. Identify a specific at-risk population.

An analysis of whether or not the policy meets the needs of the population groups most affected by the policy.

Recommendations for alternative policies that would address the gaps identified in the policy. Please be specific in recommendations.

· How does false memory development affect how we learn effectively?

Knowledge Acquisition and Memory Development

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, please read all the required readings and the Instructor Guidance, as well as view all required multimedia. It is suggested that you also review the recommended resources for this week as a number of them may assist you in creating this written assignment with links to applicable articles.

Too often, when we learn about memory development, we forget that this has a direct relationship to effectively learning. Knowledge is essentially a memory and how well we process information affects our performance at many levels. For this paper, you will be explaining some of the cognitive-based ideologies that explain how memory development works, how it is affected by outside variables, and strategies for improving one’s own information processing effectively. You will demonstrate an understanding of psychological research methods and skeptical inquiry by correctly utilizing support resources within your writing.

Discuss the following in your paper:

· What is memory development and how does it relate to acquiring new knowledge?

· Why is it important to successfully move information from working (short-term) memory to long-term memory (effective information processing)?

· What strategies can be utilized to move knowledge from working memory to long-term memory more effectively? (List a minimum of three strategies.)

· How much does attention and perception play a role in successful development of schema?

· How do the types of memories (knowledge) affect how we effectively process information?

· Consider the following:

· Semantic memories

· Episodic memories

· Autobiographical memories

· How does false memory development affect how we learn effectively? Is anyone immune?

Instructor Comments/Instructions:

Each week you’ve been learning important tools and strategies to keep you moving forward and juggling life, in general. This assignment will help you to identify career resources and explain how the skills and strategies you are learning can help you with your networking.

Ch. 6 on careers can help provide you with ideas for needed resources. This week’s brief articles and video on the Electronic Reserve Reading page also provide helpful information.

Answer all of the questions in the following table.

Respond in 50 to 100 words:

1. Who are the people in your life that can help you build your professional and academic networks? Consider your friends, family, current and past co-workers, current and former classmates, teachers, community members, and neighbors.

2. What is a professional organization you would like to join? How can joining this organization benefit you in terms of networking?

Describe how that behaviorist would teach an adult a new skill

Behavioral Theorists

Post your response to the topic below with at least 300 words.  Cite information from at least one academic source, such as your textbook or an article from the Argosy Online Library, to support your statements.  Use current APA standards to properly cite your source(s).

Discussion Topic

Pavlov, Watson, and Skinner are considered the originators of behaviorism. All contributed to learning theory. All three of the researchers studied the effects of the environment on learning.

Select one of the three behaviorists who, in your opinion, offers the most compelling argument for the use of behaviorism when teaching a new subject to an adult and to a child. Identify that behaviorist, then answer the following questions about his approach:

  1. Describe how that behaviorist would teach an adult a new skill. Be specific; what is the skill?
  2. What steps would the behaviorist use?
  3. Would that behaviorist use a different approach with a child?
  4. Why do you think this behaviorist’s approach is best?
  5. What issues or problems do you find in the other two behaviorists’ approaches?

How do the theories view adult development?

THEORIES

Now that you have read and reviewed theories of development, take your learning a step further by testing your critical thinking skills on this scientific reasoning exercise.

Five (5) major theories of human development are described, compared, and evaluated in this section. These are the psychoanalytic theories of Freud and Erikson; the behaviorism of Pavlov and Skinner and the social learning theory of Bandura; humanism and evolutionary theory; Piaget’s cognitive theory; and Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory. Although each theory is too restricted to account solely for the tremendous diversity in human development, each has made an important contribution to developmental psychology.

To help clarify your understanding of the major developmental theories, this exercise asks you to focus on the similar, contradictory, and complementary aspects of the five (5) theories. Please answer these questions, and submit your answers on this forum.

1. Which of the major developmental theories are stage theories? Which are not?

2. Which theories emphasize individual conscious organization of experience? unconscious urges? observable behavior? the interaction of nature and nurture?

3. Which theories emphasize the impact of early experience on development?

4. How does each theory view the child?

5. How do the theories view adult development?

6. Do the theories use the same methodology? How does each make use of the scientific method?

7. Which theories have been criticized for being too subjective? too mechanistic? too deterministic? for neglecting the role of biological maturation in guiding development?

develop some hypotheses to   explore, as well as listening to what the client says about himself.

Hector is a 35-year-old Hispanic male. Hector was seriously injured   in an auto accident 5 months ago. He spent 4 months in the hospital.   One leg and hip suffered permanent damage. He will probably always   need a cane and walk with a limp. He also has limited mobility in his   right arm and shoulder and cannot lift anything heavy.

Hector grew up in a family with a construction business. He has been   working in construction since high school. Social work at the rehab   hospital referred Hector to counseling because he is not adjusting   well to his injuries. He is very depressed and angry because he cannot   continue to work in his chosen occupation. Hector says, “What   use am I now? I am the man in the family. I should be strong. I need   to support the family. I don’t want my wife to work. I   don’t know what I am going to do to make a living.”

Hector still experiences severe pain in his shoulder and his leg. He   spends a lot of time watching TV and drinking. At this point, he is   not looking for work. His family has reached out to him but he avoids   interaction with his siblings and his parents because they remind him   of what he no longer can do. He feels shame when he is around family   members because of his disability. His relationship with his wife is   tense because he is often angry and withdrawn.

You are meeting with Hector for the first time and want to get the story.

As we meet with a new client we develop some hypotheses to   explore, as well as listening to what the client says about himself.

Write a 750-1,000-word paper addressing the following:

  1. What are some of primary issues that Hector is   addressing?
  2. What are some of Hector’s feelings?
  3. What are Hector’s behaviors and how are these impacting     his adjustment?
  4. How might Hector’s cultural heritage     be impacting his adjustment to his injury?
  5. What are some     beliefs that may be impacting Hector’s adjustment?
  6. How might Hector’s family background be impacting his   adjustment?
  7. What might be some issues that will need to be     addressed in counseling?
  8. What are the stages of change the     counselor will help Hector through? Provide a brief definition     of each stage.
  9. What steps can a counselor take to help     Hector explore his problems?
  10. Consider the following     counselor skills: eye contact, closed and open-ended questions,     paraphrasing and summarizing, reflection, body language, tone,     listening, empathy, genuineness, unconditional positive regard,     interpretation, tracking, reflecting emotion, active presence,     structuring sessions, encouragement, questioning and clarifying,     counselor self-awareness, tolerating intensity, validating,     challenging, multicultural awareness/acceptance, probing and     questioning, posture. Pick one skill and discuss how a counselor     should use this in their sessions with Hector.

Include at three scholarly references in your paper. At least two   resources should identify issues that need to be addressed when you   are working with someone who is being rehabilitated from a serious injury.

How can counselors challenge a client without getting into a     power struggle with a client, or provoking client   defensiveness?

Write a 750-1,000-word essay outlining at least four guidelines for   effectively challenging a client. For each guideline, provide a   case example illustrating the principle. Address the following in your paper:

  1. How can counselors challenge a client without getting into a     power struggle with a client, or provoking client   defensiveness?
  2. How can counselors help a client to identify     unused resources and strengths?
  3. How can counselors help a     client to identify blind spots while continuing to provide empathy     and support for the client?
  4. How would counselors work     with a client within an interdisciplinary treatment team?
  5. How can a counselor act as a consultant when a practicing     counselor asks for help to strengthen their challenging skills with   clients?
  6. For this part of the assignment, you may write in     the first person. Reflect on your level of assertiveness. Do you     feel you are assertive enough to challenge clients comfortably or do     you feel you are too passive or aggressive? What might keep you from     challenging a client?

Provide at least three scholarly references in your paper.
