prepare a pamphlet that can be distributed at  mental health clinics, public health centers, and physicians’ offices  explaining the relationship between methamphetamine and mental health

Warm-Up Activity 9.1: How to Prepare a Pamphlet

A pamphlet is an format in which you can present select and concise  information to improve knowledge levels, to change someone’s attitude  toward a subject, to be used in conjunction with other interventions, to  educate patients, their families and professionals, and to target  specific populations.

The Challenge in Preparing a Pamphlet

Writing an effective pamphlet is challenging. You have a limited  amount of space in which to provide information. This is where  organizing and outlining becomes important.

1. Determine the key concepts. Your assignment will outline several or all points that need to be covered.

2. Use headings or subtitles to address those key concepts.

3. Put the key point first in the explanation for each section.

4. Properly cite your supporting resources just as you would do with a  traditional paper. NOTE: Double-check with your Mentor to see if he or  she will accept footnotes rather than a reference section for your  pamphlet if it helps with readability of your information.

5. Graphics, photographs, charts and other illustrations need to be appropriate to the topic and audience.

Creating a Pamphlet

There are a number of software programs including Microsoft Publisher  that are designed to create a variety of different written materials.  But you can easily create your own using Microsoft Word.

Depending on the version of Word that you may have, you can open a  template and simply cut and paste your information into the template. Or  you can search the Internet for a free template.

But you can also create a simple pamphlet in Word by following these steps.

1. Open a new file in Word, name it and save it as you would any other assignment.

2. Go to PAGE LAYOUT>MARGINS>NARROW (1/2 inch)

3. Write your text and insert graphics

4. Go to PAGE LAYOUT>ORIENTATION>LANDSCAPE. Change to landscape – 11 x 8 ½

5. Highlight text.

6. With text highlighted, go to PAGE LAYOUT>COLUMNS>THREE. Click and save.

Your file now is a draft pamphlet that you now can review, revise and proof before you submit it to your Mentor for feedback.

Simple Tips

Effective pamphlets are those that present information that is organized, supported with valid research, and easy to understand.

1. Use short words and sentences. Keep your audience in mind.

2. Use quotes sparingly. As a general rule, quotes have value for  emphasis if you cannot rephrase the information any better in your own  words.

3. Use the active voice. “Families can provide support to children  struggling with homework by”… rather than “Support can be provided by  the family to children struggling with homework by…”

4. Be positive. “Families should” rather than “Families should not”

Presentation Tips

1. Use a simple font and no less than 12 point (footnotes should be no smaller than 9 point)

2. Use the same font throughout.

3. Use color sparingly and for emphasis only. The same goes for underlining and italics.

4. Use white space effectively. If text is squeezed together, it is  hard to read. Rather, take time to edit your information so that your  key concepts are clearly and simply presented.

Assignment

You need to prepare a pamphlet that can be distributed at  mental health clinics, public health centers, and physicians’ offices  explaining the relationship between methamphetamine and mental health.  Be sure to include the following in your pamphlet:

  • A definition of methamphetamines, their most common form and usages
  • How methamphetamines are abused
  • Intoxication caused by methamphetamine use
  • Long and short term effects of methamphetamine abuse
  • Symptoms and methods of withdrawal from methamphetamine use
  • Psychiatric illnesses association with methamphetamine use
  • Different ways disorders co-occur with methamphetamine (e.g., self-medications vs. meth-caused mental disorder)
  • Treatment options and prognoses for methamphetamine addiction

Support your pamphlet with at least 5 peer-reviewed scholarly references. In  addition, provide two local community resources (Columbus, Ohio area)that deal with the  problem of methamphetamine and mental health issues.
Your  pamphlet should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and  concepts presented by providing new thoughts and insights  relating directly to this topic. Be creative while reflecting scholarly  writing and current APA standards.

How does one learn forgiveness?

Chapter 9 Becoming and Being Wise Developing Wisdom

Many theorists argue that wisdom develops from knowledge, cognitive skills and personality factors. Understanding culture and the environment also considered vital. Mentors are believed to be an important mechanism for developing wisdom “Two heads are better than one”

Wise People and Their Characteristics

Longitudinal studies have determined that a person’s childhood does not determine the development of wisdom and that wise people achieve greater life satisfaction than the unwise. Orwell and Achenbaum suggest that women’s acts of wisdom typically occur in private whereas men’s acts of wisdom are more public Baltes and Staudinger report no age differences between 25 and 75 years but that the time between 15 and 25 is particularly important in developing wisdom. Some professions associated with higher levels of wisdom: clinical psychologists

a. Do you know a wise person? a) What kinds of characteristics make him/her a wise person?

b. Do you consider yourself a wise person b) How can we cultivate wisdom in everyday life?

Chapter 10 Forgiveness

· Defined by Thompson and colleagues, forgiveness is freeing from a negative attachment to the source of the transgression. This definition allows the target of forgiveness to be oneself, another person, or a situation.

· Defined by McCullough and colleagues, forgiveness is an increase in prosocial motivation, in that there is less of a desire to avoid or seek revenge against the transgressor and an increased desire to act positively towards the transgressing person. This definition is only applicable when another person is the target of the transgression.

· Defined by Enright and colleagues, forgiveness is the willingness to give up resentment, negative judgment, and indifference towards the transgressor and give undeserved compassion, generosity, and benevolence to the transgressing person. This definition is limited to people and does not include situations.

· Defined by Tangney and colleagues, giving up negative emotions is the core of forgiveness.

How does one learn forgiveness?

· According to the model developed by Gordon, Baucom, and Snyder, three steps are needed for achieving forgiveness toward another person. The initial impact stage includes negative emotions such as fear, anger and hurt. The search for meaning stage investigates why the incident happened. And the recovery stage is when the people move forward in their lives.

· The REACH model developed by Everett Worthington is a five-step process to forgiveness regarding infidelity. The acronym stands for Recall the hurt and the nature of the injury caused; Empathy promotion in both partners; Altruistic gift giving of forgiveness between partners; Committing verbally to forgive partner, and; Holding onto the forgiveness for each other.

· Self-forgiveness is aimed at lessening the feelings of shame or guilt. The individual is encouraged to take responsibility for the action and to let go and to move forward. The goal is to prevent the individual from letting the negative feelings interfere with positive living.

· Thought stopping and examination of thinking behind negative situations are needed to forgive situations and inanimate objects. The individual will learn that they should not blame happenings in their lives for their problems.

Why forgive?

· An evolutionary advantage to forgiveness is that it may break the violence cycle in human beings and the survival chances will be increased. With lower levels of hostility and aggression and higher levels of positive feelings, the social order may be stabilized.

· Forgiveness requires a sense of self, which is often damaged due to problems requiring the forgiveness. If one learns to forgive, one will build the sense of self up and it may become stronger.

· Forgiveness creates positive emotions.

Think about a situation in which you forgave someone.  a) Explain how you felt before and after forgiving.  b) Do you think that this forgiveness was true forgiveness and why? (Link your comments to one or more of the forgiveness theories presented in the chapter.

Life Plan Assignment

Throughout our lives, most of us experience several significant events, or “life events.” Educational pursuits, career aspirations, recreational interests, marital life, children and end-of-life preferences are common subjects. The emotion surrounding these events varies, but each should cause us to examine our future (and past) to ensure we’re making the best decisions possible for ourselves, our friends, and our families.

A life plan is a detailed description of your decisions, intentions, hopes and dreams. A detailed life plan is instructive for creating greater clarity regarding life priorities and next steps.

Assignment instructions:

Pick a topic of interest in human growth and development. This could be something that you worry about in the future (i.e., your father getting Alzheimer’s Disease) or something that happened in the past that you wish had been handled better (i.e., your best friend was bullied in the 6th grade and you didn’t know what to do at the time) or something you are concerned about now (i.e., your friend is bulimic.)

Ways to identify a topic:

What are the different nuances of meaning associated with the expressions brain damage and central nervous system impairment?

Assignment 1: Dyslexia

Edward is a seven-year-old boy who has difficulty reading. His teacher refers him to the school psychologist to evaluate for a learning disability. The psychologist’s report concludes that Edward has dyslexia and mild central nervous system impairment.

Edward’s mother asks whether the report means that her son has brain damage. The psychologist says, “He has impairments, but I wouldn’t say that he is brain damaged.”

How would you explain this answer? What is dyslexia?

What are the different nuances of meaning associated with the expressions brain damage and central nervous system impairment?

In our culture, are we overly sensitive and fearful about the idea of brain damage?

Why do you suppose some teenagers move through adolescence with relative ease, whereas others find it a difficult period?

Question 01

Was your adolescence a period of storm and stress or was it relatively peaceful? Why do you suppose some teenagers move through adolescence with relative ease, whereas others find it a difficult period? What made adolescence easy or difficult for you?

Question 02

The more years of higher education and life experience a person has, the deeper and more dialectical that person’s reasoning becomes. Give a specific example of how your thinking about an issue today is deeper than it was when you were younger, or before you started college.

Question 03

Many people have inaccurate perceptions of cognitive development in middle adulthood.

Create a pamphlet on cognitive changes in middle adulthood that could be displayed in a doctor’s office. Using research in the text as a guide, outline the information you would include in your pamphlet. For instance, what cognitive changes often accompany middle adulthood? How is information processing and problem-solving affected? How can middle-aged adults maintain good cognitive health? What positive cognitive changes occur in middle adulthood?

Question 04

Please watch this brief video on the growing “sandwich generation” in American families.

TID101 – Sandwich Generation (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.TID101 - Sandwich Generation

Couples are starting their families later, so children are often still living at home when the couples are in their 50s. More children return to live at their parent’s house after finishing college. At the same time, grandparents are living longer, with greater physical needs, so they are also moving in with their middle adult-aged children. Often the task of caring for everyone falls on the shoulders of the middle-aged woman in the household.

Briefly discuss three ways in which a middle-aged woman’s social and emotional development may be uniquely stressed in this situation, and offer some suggestions on how she can avoid feeling over-burdened.

Question 5

An elderly relative has just been widowed. List three things that might indicate that this person is at risk for having a difficult time. In a sentence or two, describe the best approach for discussing this relative’s loss.

Describe a disagreement that you've had with someone about an incident that involved memory

NO PLAGIARISM, AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTION BELOW, USE SIMPLE WORDS AND BE ON TIME! The lecture is attached

THANKS

Describe a disagreement that you’ve had with someone about an incident that involved memory. Using the research on Memory Construction Errors*, choose 1 way that would explain why YOUR memory of the incident MIGHT be wrong (you are not admitting that your memory is wrong – you are merely speculating on how your memory might be wrong).

In discussing your chosen memory construction error, be sure to

  • -describe/explain the construction error; discuss how the construction error reflects the memory incident you have described above AND
  • -describe one study that shows the error in action

If you’ve never argued or disagreed with someone about a memory (!), describe a case in the news that has relied on eyewitness memory and apply the forum assignment to this case.

*Memory Construction errors are not the same as processing errors or forgetting: there are only 3 kinds that you should be writing about: source amnesia, misinformation, or imagination.  Be sure you are writing about the correct information

Summarize demographics of the crime for both the perpetrators and the victim

Assignment 2: Analyzing Theories of Crime

You are an investigative reporter for a large news network. You are working on a news piece identifying how theories of crime explain specific crimes including the demographics of perpetrators and victims. You are required to make a thirty-minute presentation to your producers to convince them to run your story.

Choose a specific crime from the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program at the following:

  • US Department of Justice, The Federal Bureau of Investigation. (2009). 2008 Crime in the United States: About crime in the U.S. Retrieved from
    http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2008

Research this crime using your textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet. Be sure to include the UCR and other crime reports in your research

Based on your research, develop a presentation that addresses the following:

  • Define the crime. Include both the legal definition and others as necessary.
  • Summarize demographics of the crime for both the perpetrators and the victim. Be sure to cover the following:
    • Gender
    • Ethnicity
    • Socioeconomic characteristics
    • Other relevant diversity issues
  • Choose two theories of the causes of crime that have been discussed and analyzed so far in the course; apply those theories to the selected crime. Be sure to cover the following:
    • Explain the type of each theory in detail.
    • Discuss the development of each theory and the main theorists associated with them.
    • Compare and contrast the two theories of crime selected. Discuss the ways in which they fit with the crime and the specific demographics associated with the crime.
  • Based on your research, develop your own hypothesis of the cause of this crime. Using the theories that you have chosen, you can develop your own “combination” theory.
  • Give valid reasons and scholarly, peer-reviewed sources in support of your theory.

You are allowed to present your theory in first person; however, be careful not to abuse this privilege.

Your presentation should include the following:

  • A title slide and a reference slide (these will not count towards the total number of slides).
  • At least five sentences of speaker notes for each section to clarify anything not included in the slides. (As this is a presentation the slides should cover the main points and the details should be covered in the speaker’s notes.) The speaker notes should be properly referenced.

Develop a 10–15-slide presentation in PowerPoint format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M3_A2.ppt.

Research theories related to gender and crime

Assignment 1: Discussion—Sociological Causes of Crime

Natalie will be one of the first in her family to earn a college degree. She is determined to earn her bachelor’s degree in psychology and then possibly go on to a master’s degree, or even a doctorate. However, these dreams need to deal with reality. She has two children to raise on her own, and has to stay active with work as well as her children’s lives. She is proud of her accomplishments and hopes that her children will go as far, if not further with their education.

Natalie’s two brothers did not seem to have the same chances. Her oldest brother seems to have the most difficult time. He was always angry as a teenager and got suspended from school on a number of occasions due to fights. Once, he got into an altercation with a teacher and hit the teacher pretty hard; he was expelled from school. He took his GED at a boys’ boot camp run by the sheriff’s office. When he was released at the age of eighteen, he had a difficult time landing a job and worked on and off as a day laborer. He was later arrested for stealing tools from a construction site and sent back to jail. This only seemed to increase his anger towards everyone. Natalie stopped visiting him and now keeps in touch sporadically. The last she heard, he was working odd jobs and relying on alcohol and drugs.

Natalie wonders why her brother has turned out so different. Of course, they all had the same childhood, and their father was an abusive alcoholic. But all the more reason, she thought, her brothers would choose a different path. She wondered if they had the same choices as she did. Did being a male make life harder? She always thought men had it easier in life. She wondered if her brothers were to blame for their decisions and life choices, or if they ever had a real choice at all. She felt frustrated that, with all her psychology courses, she still could not tell why her brothers turned out so differently.

Research theories related to gender and crime using the textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet. Identify scholarly, peer-reviewed sources for use in this assignment.

Based on the scenario, your readings and research, respond to the following:

  • Select at least two different, contemporary theories that would apply to the case.
  • Employ the theories to explain why Natalie and her brothers have chosen different paths in life.

Give reasons in support of your responses.

Write your initial response in 4–6 paragraphs. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.
