Discussion: Diversity In The Workplace

Discussion: Diversity in the Workplace

Creating and managing a diverse workforce is a process, not a destination.  —R. Roosevelt Thomas, Jr.  What concepts come to mind when you think of diversity? What kinds of diversity exist in your workplace? How does diversity impact communication, working relationships, productivity, and patient care?  In the workplace, focusing on differences can create divisiveness. Nurse managers should approach diversity as a way to highlight, communicate, and build on the commonalities of their workforce. Modeling this behavior can encourage appreciation for diversity and create a more positive workplace environment. When managing a diverse workforce, nurse managers should never make assumptions about an individual’s motivations, goals, or work ethic based upon personal traits such as age, gender, race, or culture. Nurse managers should strive to facilitate an inclusive environment for all.  To prepare •Review the article, “Diversity within Nursing: Effects on Nurse-Nurse Interaction, Job Satisfaction, and Turnover.” Examine Figure 1 on p. 218. Determine how these and other diversity issues might impact the interaction of nurses in the workplace. •Consider situations in your current organization or one with which you are familiar in which obvious diversity exists. How do these types of diversity issues affect the daily work environment? •Examine this week’s Learning Resources to identify strategies for finding commonalities among workers. How might these strategies also help to increase appreciation of diversity within the workplace?  By Day 3  Post an explanation of how diversity-related issues impact your current organization or one with which you are familiar. If you do not believe there are any issues related to diversity, explain how this workplace instills a culture of acceptance and positivity. Conclude your posting by describing at least two commonalties everyone in this workplace shares and at least one new strategy you could implement to increase appreciation of both differences and similarities.

Statistical interaction can happen in a two-way ANOVA. It is possible for variables to work independent from one another within a study. When this happens, there is a need to consider the interaction between the variables. A statistical interaction occurs when the effect of two variables working together causes a greater change or a lesser change, than is anticipated. The variables are somehow dependent on one another. You will have to know the levels of each variable to understand the effect on the data. The independent variables are creating a greater effect on the dependent variable. The independent variables are not affecting each other. The study for exercise 18, researchers collected data from family members regarding level of care in Hospice with LPC, hospital with LPC, and hospital without LPC. The family members did not report a change in the level of care within the hospital with LCP vs. hospital without LCP comparison. When the hospice vs. hospital with LCP or the hospice vs. hospital without LCP groups were compared, there was a significant difference. Differences in the level of care was indicated by the p < alpha. LCP and hospice, and LCP and hospital seem to interact with the level of care (Grove & Cipher, 2017).

Interaction is a kind of action that occurs as two or more objects influence one another. The idea of a two-way effect is essential in the concept of interaction, as opposed to a one-way causal effect combination of many simple interactions can lead to surprising emergent phenomena. Interaction has different tailored meanings in various sciences. All systems are related and interdependent. Every action has a consequence.

In statistics, an interaction is a special property of three or more variables, where two or more variables interact to affect a third variable in a non-additive manner. In other words, the two variables interact to have an effect that is more than the sum of their parts.

For example, two of my friends are on weight loss program. We’re evaluating 2 different diets and 2 different exercise programs. One focused on cardio and one focused on weight training. We want to determine which result in greater weight loss. We randomly assign participants to either diet A or B and either the cardio or weight training regimen, and then record the amount of weight they’ve lost after 1 month.

Interaction effects represent the combined effects of factors on the dependent measure. When an interaction effect is present, the impact of one factor depends on the level of the other factor. For example, imagine a study that tests the effects of a treatment on an outcome measure.  The treatment variable is composed of two groups, treatment and control. The results are that the mean for the treatment group is higher than the mean for the control group. But what if the researcher is also interested in whether the treatment is equally effective for females and males. That is, is there a difference in treatment depending on gender group? This is a question of interaction (Stevens, 1999).

I spent a lot of time trying to find an example that I can use to give me a better idea of variables from a work, social, or academic population, and even though I can put forth a definition, I still have a hard time wrapping my head around it.  I found this YouTube video on main effects and interaction of sleep deprivation and caffeine that helped a little.

Statistical interaction can be described as the effect of one of the independent variable that may depend on the importance level of another independent variable.  For there
to be a statistical interaction there must be a factorial design consisting of two or more independent variables become crossed with each other so that there may be observations at every level of the two or more independents.

In my current position we perform many Mini Mental exams every day to our geriatric inpatient mental health patients. We admit patients with various mental health conditions ranging from depression and being alert and oriented times four, to a stoke or traumatic brain injury who are confused and disoriented.  I am going to use the
example of performing research on patients who are alert and oriented times four and staff (if there are not enough participants) in the effects of practice and stress level with the memory task performance using the Mini Mental Exam. The researcher will provide a variety of words to each participant for them to remember and will ask for a recall in a non stressful atmosphere where the participants are told the recall number of words in not important. Later, the researcher will provide the variety of words to be recalled in a
high stressful atmosphere and the researcher stress the importance and expectation of the words to be recalled. The dependent variable in this example should be the words recalled for the list provided by the researcher.

MN569 Unit 2 Assignment: Health Information Technology (Health IT)

No Plegarism please, assignment will be checked with Turnitin.

Will need minimum of 5 full pages, title, and reference page APA Style, double spaced, times new roman, font 12, and and (3 references within 5 years 2014-2018) with intext citations).

Health information technology (health IT) makes it possible for health care providers to better manage patient care through secure use and sharing of health information. Health IT includes the use of electronic health records (EHRs) instead of paper medical records to maintain people’s health information.

Share the EHR platform that your practice uses (Cerner) and discuss the challenges and barriers to electronic charting. Why have we moved from paper charting to EHR’s?  What is meant by meaningful use regulations and why is this important to know when documenting in the EHR?

Please support your work with at least three evidence based practice resources that are less than 5 years old (2014-2018).

Written Paper (Microsoft Word doc): minimum 1500 words using 6th edition APA formatting

Please review the grading rubric under Course Resources in the Grading Rubric section.

Lab Assignment: Revenue Integrity

The idea of revenue integrity is to take steps to ensure that everything a hospital charges for is valid and billable, and that it is billing for the allowable items for a given payer and plan rather than eat the costs of those items.

Watch the following video about revenue integrity.

Watch the Video below:

3 Areas of Healthcare Revenue Integrity (7:09)

Write a one-page paper that summarizes at least five lessons you took from the video.

Education

As a future nurse educator, your understanding of the National League of Nursing (NLN) will be very important as you are nearing the end of your program. As a result, please go to the NLN website listed below and read the eight NLN Core Competencies that all nurse educators should possess:  http://www.nln.org/professional-development-programs/competencies-for-nursing-education/nurse-educator-core-competency.  Read Chapter 2 in Nurse Educator Competencies: Creating an Evidence-Based Practice for Nurse Educators. Then, reflect on Competency 1: Facilitate Learning and the associated behaviors as they relate to your practicum experience. Lastly, describe the ways in which you will meet Competency 1 in your practicum. What are there facilitative behaviors that you have not thought about, but need to include in your teaching repertoire?
