STRATEGIC PLAN IN HEALTH CARE ORGANIZATION

When a patient arrives in an emergency department with a dangerously high fever, a nurse typically knows before treatment begins how he or she will evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention.

Evaluation is a critical component of any planned change, and it is essential to integrate it into the design and implementation of a strategic plan.

In this Discussion, you examine the significance of evaluation for the change you are proposing through your Course Project.

How would you integrate evaluation in your strategic plan? How long would it take for the proposed change to become status quo, or refreeze, and what is an appropriate timeline for evaluation?

To prepare:

Review the information presented in this week’s Learning Resources. Reflect on how to develop an evaluation plan as part of the strategic planning process STRATEGIC PLAN IN HEALTH CARE ORGANIZATION

Refer to the balanced scorecard you have created for your Course Project. How would you evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed change using the metrics on your balanced scorecard? What other elements of your strategic plan may be important to consider as you design the evaluation plan?

Think about the timeline you would propose for evaluation. Consider the following:

How and when would you conduct evaluation?

Why is refreezing important? What strategies could you employ to facilitate refreezing?

Would you continue to evaluate the planned change further in the future? If so, how?

Post an explanation of how you would develop an evaluation plan for your proposed change.

Outline an initial timeline for evaluation, and explain at least two strategies you would incorporate to encourage refreezing.

Share insights you have gained about the process of planning evaluation.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ responses.

Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days by offering additional ideas for refining their approach to evaluation and proposed timeline.

Process Flow Analysis

Have you ever encountered a process that had too many steps or was overly complicated? Perhaps you examined the process and looked for areas where you could remove steps or simplify its flow. If you did, you were conducting a process flow analysis.

Process analysis is an important step in determining the financial well-being of an organization and pinpointing areas where changes could help improve the bottom line. In this Assignment, you will create a process flow analysis (also known as workflow diagramming) for an activity in your own organization (or one with which you are familiar).

To prepare:

  • Review the information in the Learning Resources (including the Media) for this week dealing with how to perform a process flow analysis Process Flow Analysis.
  • Identify a process that is completed on a consistent basis in your organization (or one with which you are familiar). Examples of a process include such things as how a patient is moved through the system, or what must occur to prepare an examination room or hospital room for the next patient.
  • Create a simple flow analysis map detailing the process using Microsoft Word using one of the methods below:
    • Select SmartArt from the Insert menu and select a diagram that matches the flowchart structure you would like to use.
    • Select Shapes from theInsert menu and select the shape that matches the flowchart piece you would like to use. Continue inserting shapes and connect them using the arrow shapes.
  • Reflect on the ease or difficulty of obtaining the necessary information to create your flow analysis map.
  • Identify “white space” as defined in the article, “Hospital Operating System: Unleashing Throughput Potential” found in the Learning Resources for this week.
  • Determine strategies for improving the process flow.
  • Reflect on the role of the process flow analysis in financial decision making and how it can have positive impacts on the process. Attach your Flow Analysis Map to your Discussion post.

Health Care Challenges Of An Aging Population

Accordingto the CDC, “in the United States, the proportion of the population aged >65 years is projected to increase from 12.4% in 2000 to 19.6% in 2030,” (CDC, 2003, para. 2). Caring for this aging population is going to be one of the greatest challenges facing the health care industry. Not only will the number of individuals requiring care rise, but so will the cost. As poignantly stated by Crippen and Barnato, “unless we change the practice of medicine and reduce future costs, and explicitly address the ethical dilemmas we face, there may come a time when our kids simply cannot afford us” (2011, p. 128).

In this Discussion, you will examine the ethical issues that the United States and other nations must address when faced with the health care challenges of an aging population. Health Care Challenges Of An Aging Population

  • Consider the ethical aspects of health care and health policy for an aging population.
  • Review the Hayutin, Dietz, and Mitchell report presented in the Learning Resources. The authors pose the question, “What are the economic consequences, now and for future generations of taxpayers if we fail to adapt our policies to the changing reality of an older population?” (p. 21). Consider how you would respond to this question. In addition, reflect on the ethical decisions that arise when dispersing limited funds.
  • Contemplate the impact of failing to adjust policy in accordance with the changing reality of an older population.

Social Marketing Management and Organizational Behavior

Part 1
Transparent and accountable governance and strong leadership are the cornerstones of successful public health operations and delivery of public health services.Respond to the following questions in relation to governance and leadership:
1. What are the differences between governance and leadership?
2. What systems or processes should public health agencies utilize to ensure communication and accountability between their governing board and leaders?

Justify your answers.According to Kotter (2001), ” . . . leadership and management are two distinctive and complementary systems of action. Social Marketing Management and Organizational Behavior

Each has its own function and characteristic activities. Both are necessary for success in an increasingly complex and volatile business environment.”Respond to the following questions in relation to management and leadership:
1. What are the differences between leadership and management?

2. Why do you think Kotter described leadership and management as complementary systems of action?

In recent years, the optimal management structure has shifted from a narrow span of control to a broad or wide span of control. Earlier, three to seven individuals were reporting to the same manager (narrow span), whereas today, it is common to have twenty or more staff members reporting to the same person (broad span), as stated in the course textbook.Based on the readings for this week, the South University Online Library, and the Internet, respond to the following discussion points:
Identify at least one pro and one con for each span of control described above.
State, with reasons, which of the two structures you would recommend.

Part 2
Several decades ago, Kotler and Zaltman (1971) first used the term “social marketing” to describe the application of marketing theory to solve social- and health-related issues. Since then, social marketing has grown in popularity and usage within the public health community, including within national agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state and local health departments.
Some of the factors responsible for the success of national social marketing campaigns are the efficient use of financial resources to develop marketing strategies, consistent messages across geographic boundaries, and uniform evaluation measures.

Respond to the following discussion points in relation to social marketing campaigns:
What challenges might you expect when adapting a national social marketing campaign in your local community?
Recommend ways in which your local health department may address these challenges.

IDENTIFYING AND PRIORITIZING HEALTH PROBLEMS

Community health assessments are used by health planners to identify, and prioritize health problems within a given community. To prioritize health programs and their development, a needs assessment is used.

There are four types of needs that should be considered in a needs assessment. Although there is no single way to conduct a needs assessment, the basic steps to conducting a needs assessment can be identified.

Using the South University Online Library or the Internet, research about needs assessments and the types of health needs in your community. Based on your research, create a 2- to 3-page Microsoft Word document that: IDENTIFYING AND PRIORITIZING HEALTH PROBLEMS

  • Describes the four types of needs and compares them. Explains the interaction of the four types and the role of each type of need in the community assessment process.
  • Selects one of the four needs and provides an example of how this need can be applied to a health issue in your community. Describes the potential pitfalls of focusing a needs assessment on a single need. Provides examples to support your assertions.
  • Identifies and describes the basic steps of conducting a needs assessment and also explains the importance of each.
  • Describes any additional steps that should be considered in the assessment process.
