STUDY OF DIVERSITY AND THE CHILDBEARING FAMILY Purpose: Students will develop an appreciation for the uniqueness inherent in membership in a cultural or religious group and suggest strategies for considering that uniqueness in providing holistic nursing care to the childbearing client in the context of her family. Emphasis will be placed on those diverse groups with common representation in the metropolitan middle Georgia practice area. Objectives: As a result of this study of diversity and childbearing, the student will be able to: 1. Compare and contrast the dominant cultural values in the Middle Georgia area as they relate to the childbearing family. 2. Examine how a family’s cultural heritage with its inherent traditional health beliefs and practices affects contemporary culturally diverse families. 3. Given a real or simulated client representing a culturally diverse group, suggest how the nursing care plan should be altered to reflect her cultural uniqueness. 4. Examine beliefs within the major religious groups commonly represented in the metropolitan Middle Georgia area that can affect health care. Instructions: Each clinical group will examine a selected cultural or religious group of their choice or from the list below and will develop a power point presentation and post in the discussion section in D2L. Students may explore their assignment in the literature or through an interview with members of that particular group. The report should include information about the following: 1. Traditional health beliefs and health practices 2. Beliefs that affect family life & childbearing 3. View on contraception 4. Views on pregnancy 5. Beliefs about childbirth 6. Dietary practices • The power point should: o be at least six slides but not more than ten slides answering the above information o Include at least three (3) references in APA format published within the past 10 years for your culture or religion o Be posted in the discussion section in D2L o Include a paragraph about how the findings would affect the nursing care planning for that particular group in question. 1 • • • Each clinical group will present their culture report during class presentation day. You are encouraged to remain professional and adhere to University guidelines but you can be creative and unique during your group presentation. Each of the response to the clinical group member must include: o How the student will be able to use the information provided in practice of maternal child nursing o At least one question that will stimulate further discussion on the topic. If the primary resource about the relevant culture or religion group was obtained from an individual practicing that culture/religion, include this statement as #1 on your references: o The primary resource of the information in this report was obtained from an individual practicing this culture/religion IMPORTANT: See Grading Rubric for Discussion posts in D2L in Culture Report module. Although this is a group project you will also be evaluated individually by your group members for participation. You may select a cultural group or religious group.
