There are always issues in the medical care community which need to be faced to improve the quality or efficiency of care as well as the safety conditions of patients. In medical care, our key focus is providing patients with quality care in a manner that is efficient and safe. As such, we are constantly facing issues to improve these aspects. In my place of work, one of the main issues I have found is always trying to improve the communication between health care professionals and risk of burnout of nurses. We use the Situation-Background- Assessment-Recommendation (SBAR) as our main method of communication. Poor communication, leading to patient death and injury resulted in 60-70% of significant issues reported to the Joint Commission (Labson, 2013). This information supports the need for improved communication methods. The patient to nurse ratio also plays an important role in nurse burnout (Shekelle, 2013). This year we have seen a huge decrease in number of injuries on our floor after reducing the nurse to patient ratio from 6 patients per nurse to 4 patients per nurse. Utilizing SBAR has assisted in decreasing turnover time and reducing errors in medication. All in all, making use of research supported measures to decrease problems and increase efficiency and consistency of care, provides patients with better care and health care professionals with higher levels of success and accomplishments.

Not only is advocating for your patient the right way to nurse, but as stated in (Nursing advocacy, n.d., para. 2) “With energetic participation in advocacy, every nurse can help the profession to improve and move to higher levels”. As the advocate for the patient, the RN is the active listener, the speaker, the educator, the coordinator, and the emotional support person. It is a vital role, when the patient is at their weakest, the nurse is able to “ensure that proper care is delivered and the needs of the patient are met, (Helbig, J. n.d.).

Like nurses, the American Nurses Association are also advocates. They advocate for the nursing profession. The ANA “support the nurse by raising awareness to problems nurses face”, these problems are often “associated with patients, patient care, and providing a patient-centered safe environment, (Helbig, J. n.d., para. 54).

In my years of experience at the bedside there has been many an opportunity to advocate for my patient and their family. I remember taking care of a young new mother, just recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer. As a new mother, her priority was her child, and she had decided that her needs were not as important as her infants. I knew that if she left the hospital her life would be in danger. Long story short, with help from case management we were able to find an outside source to provide care for her infant while needing treatment.

Advocacy is a basic foundation to nursing. The nurse’s role in patient advocacy involves being the voice for the patient; standing up for the patient and voicing concerns, doing what is right and in the patient’s best interest, communicating properly with the patient and Interdisciplinary team, and many others. Communicating properly can also include charting. Nurses advocate for their patients by charting what really happened, no false documentation, nothing unethical like making up vital signs because they were too lazy to take them.

Collaboration is another way that nurses advocate for patients (Helbig, 2018). In order to ensure patient-centered care, collaboration between other members of the healthcare team is vital. The phrase “it takes a tribe” has never rang more true when it comes to healthcare. We work as a team to ensure our patients are getting the best care possible.

I think we’ve all had our fair share of nursing advocate stories. One recent situation while working in the post-acute rehab unit involved an older gentleman who was supposed to be discharged home the following day. He had been there after having back surgery and would’ve been going home with wife after weeks of therapy. While I was doing his assessment that evening, he voiced some concern about going home and that he felt it was a little too early. I could see the concern in his eyes. He was afraid that his wife wouldn’t be able to help him on her own and didn’t feel comfortable going home quite yet. The patient also said that he didn’t feel comfortable telling the doctor this when his discharge was discussed. Therefore, I called the doctor and told him what was going on and the patient’s concerns. The doctor agreed to keep the patient for a little longer and that we would set up for an aide to come in to the home to help with certain things. The patient was so happy when I told him that he just kept saying, “Thank you so much, you really care about us patients.” It made me realize that not all patients think that nurses advocate for them, so I was happy to sort of change his mind about this situation.
