Although grounded theory and phenomenology are different they both have common approaches to qualitative research when used by nurses. They are common because both methods look at real life situations. Phenomenologist collect data from induvial and describe their experiences. The grounded theorists use many sources to compare and analysis data. Neither grounded or phenomenologist will suit all studies. Both seek to explore real life situations, require extensive interaction between the researcher and the individual or groups. They collect data and analyze what they get from individuals and groups, they don’t take their findings based on preconceived ideas. Its difficulty to distinguish between the two because they have so much in common, however they are different and it’s important to know the difference. Phenomenology, emerged from philosophy and it aims to describe and explore experiences. This can only be done by collecting induvial data from personal experiences. Grounded theory developed in sociology and is described as qualitative methodological approach. It aims to describe and explain the phenomenon under study. Grounded collect all data sources that might aid with a theory development. Interviews are done but they also use images, observations, diaries, past literature and research. Both seek to understand people’s lives; one approach is neither right or wrong.

In this forum, we will take some time to examine a profile written by Sundell (2014). Our discussion will serve as the starting point for our focus on profile writing, and it will focus on Sundell’s profile.

However, the Profile Essay that you write will differ in terms of organization. It will resemble a standard essay in terms of having an introduction, thesis, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.Carefully review the Profile Essay Example in this week’s assigned readings, as it should serve as a model for your own essay (format, use of details, use of dialogue, and strong dominant impression).

First, read Heather Sundell’s (2014) profile titled “Want to Become a Writer? Become a Nurse.”

In your initial post, answer the following questions:

Before readers are introduced to Vicki Forman, they are presented with a picture of her in a simple pair of red scrubs. Leave aside the information you have gathered from the profile. With only Forman’s picture and no other information, what conclusions do you make about her? Now, with the information that you have gained from the profile, how have those conclusions changed? How has the profile helped you to see Forman in a different light? What is the dominant impression that Sundell creates?
In her profile of Forman, what do you feel that Sundell (2014) has done well and why? Are there areas that could be improved? If so, how and why?
Name one technique that Sundell (2014) uses in her profile that you could use in your own profile. Where in your paper (Profile Essay) would you use it? What do you think the effect would be?
In your responses, identify where you have common ground (agreement) with your group members, and where your opinions differ. Further the discussion by asking questions and applying proposed solutions to real-life scenarios, such as a staffing shortage at your work.

The author draws a fine line between that of procreation and reproduction. In his opinion, procreation refers to the biological method by which, individuals involve into reproducing the babies by the process which is designed for human bodies to give birth to babies. However, the distinction between that of procreation and reproduction is that, reproduction refers to the process of reproducing but not only at expense of sexual intercourse (McDonnell, 2006). It is a broad category which involves every process which can be used for reproduction of the babies, for example that of test tube babies. In the same way, the word begotten relates to that of beget which means that reproduction has taken place. However, it doesn’t specify as to which method has been used for reproduction. On contrary to it, being made refers to the process of procreation in which the humans involve sexually to reproduce babies and that only the biological method is being implied to achieve the purpose.

In my opinion, the distinction made by the author was necessary to be categorized. This is because most of the people regarded both reproduction and procreation to be the same thing which is not true (Nichols, 2004). Both the phenomena involve different process and often different complexities in their accomplishment and that different healthcare facilities and technologies are required to achieve the desired goals and objectives with respect to producing babies. This is the reason as to why, I completely agree to the definition that author has devised to both different phenomena so that they world can easily distinguish the process and somehow their end products too that who was reproduced, while who was procreated.

Meilaender uses the words of Leon Kass to help us visualize the difference between procreation and reproduction. According to Kass, “The premodern Christian English-speaking world, impressed with the world as given by a Creator, using the term “pro-creation.” We, impressed with the machine and the gross national product (our own work of creation), employ a metaphor of the factory, “reproduction” (Kass, 1985). Meilaender promotes throughout the reading that, procreation is natural and has a divine influence while reproduction (assisted reproduction especially) is unnatural and disturbs God’s divine plan. Meilaender states that a child begotten, not made, symbolizes the union of the mother and father. Being begotten isn’t simply a 50/50 reproduction of the mother and father but, “the power of their mutual love has given rise to another who, though different from them and equal in dignity to them, manifests in his person the love that unites them” (Meilaender, 2013, p. 15). Being begotten is procreation; love-giving leads to life-giving. Procreation “is, by God’s blessing, the internal fruition of the act of love, and it is a task undertaken at God’s command for the sustaining of human life” (Meilaender, 2013, p. 25).Reflecting on Meilaender’s distinction of procreation versus reproduction and being begotten versus being made, I find myself agreeing halfway with him concerning procreation and being begotten. Across all continents, cultures, races, and religions you find the procreating is normally a time of joy and celebration and a nod towards a higher power, God, for the continuation of human life. I also agree with how Meilaender describes being begotten – the child symbolizes the union and love of the mother and father. Even Meilaender using the Christian view that God gave his only begotten son, Jesus, who was proof of God’s love for us makes complete sense because it agrees with the Christian background that I was raised with.

needs assessment gathers information to identify strengths, as well as potential barriers to health. This information ultimately helps develop family-centered strategies for support and guidance.

This family health assessment is a two-part assignment. The information you gather in this initial assignment will be utilized for the second assignment in Topic 3.

Develop an interview questionnaire to be used in a family-focused functional assessment. The questionnaire must include three open-ended, family-focused questions to assess functional health patterns for each of the following:

Values/Health Perception
Nutrition
Sleep/Rest
Elimination
Activity/Exercise
Cognitive
Sensory-Perception
Self-Perception
Role Relationship
Sexuality
Coping
Select a family, other than your own, and seek permission from the family to conduct an interview. Utilize the interview questions complied in your interview questionnaire to conduct a family-focused functional assessment. Document the responses as you conduct the interview.

Upon completion of the interview, write a 750-1,000-word paper. Analyze your assessment findings. Submit your questionnaire as an appendix with your assignment.

Include the following in your paper:

Describe the family structure. Include individuals and any relevant attributes defining the family composition, race/ethnicity, social class, spirituality, and environment.
Summarize the overall health behaviors of the family. Describe the current health of the family.
Based on your findings, describe at least two of the functional health pattern strengths noted in the findings. Discuss three areas in which health problems or barriers to health were identified.
Describe how family systems theory can be applied to solicit changes in family members that, in turn, initiate positive changes to the overall family functions over time.
