Health Education plays an important role when formulating programs that will involve both patient and their respctive families. Typically, it requires health care providers to use a systematic approach when generating these educational programs. One requirement would be to assure that the individuals involved in the articulation of these programs are well trained to do so. For Instance, making sure that the following elements are covered:

Focusing on need to know content and omitting unnecessary information.
Explaining to participants what new information or skill they’re learning.
Guide trainers in choosing appropiate learning methods to enhance patient’s learning.
Assist trainers in designing appropriate assessment and evaluation tools that accurately reflect curriculum.
Once Healthcare providers have clearly outlined specific knowledge, information, attitudes, and skills that participants are expected to gain then they can proceed with construction of learning objectives. The learning objectives should be clear, conscise and include the following components: audience, behavior, standard and condition. For better maximization of objectives, healthcare providers should also consider the three different components of learning: cognitive, affective and psychomotor. Usage of all these tools, enables heath providers to develop more holistic and comprehensive objectives which therefore creates effective educational programs.

When addressing the, “Guideline for Writing Learning Objectives.” How will I articulate the objective for both patient and family?

What are my goals in patient and family education. The need to identify any learning barriers. What are my desire outcome? Do I have short term and long-term goal for my patient and family?

Any nurse even with the best intentions may fall short if learning objectives are not realistic.

Example of this would be.

Today I have been assigned a patient who had an artificial knee replacement this morning.

The first concern would be to address the management of pain. The patient is on a PCA pump for the first 12 hours. The nurse should educate for the patient to manage the pain by either using the PCA pump as needed. Educate the patient that they will not be over medication as the pump is program to lock them out if the attempt to medicate themselves excessively. The patient should try to ambulate as some as possible which would reduce to change of blood clots and promote the bowel movements.

My desired short-term goal is to have the patient rate their pain less than 5 on the pain scale for the first 24 hours. Have them ambulate to the bathroom within the first 12 hours post-op. The patient should have a bowel movement within the first 24 hours. Those are for measurable outcomes for my patient. I have now address that the patient is hard of hearing which causes a learning barrier, but can read lips and enjoys reading. I will make sure I am facing him when speaking and alert all disciplines to do so as well. I will also provide written instruction.

Patient and family education plays an important role in patient care. If the patient doesn’t understand their illness, which can be life changing, then they need to have family involved to help them with their cares so that they will not have to be readmitted to the hospital. Today, the patients family plays a vital role in continuing health but most importantly, the family members who live together. They help the patient remember to take important medications and appropriate measurements daily. As well as helping the patients to make the correct lifestyle choices that they need to stay healthy.

Educational pamphlets should be readily available to present to the patient to read, as well as their family members. There are some details that should be kept in mind while these pamphlets are being written. The Material needs to be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Action-oriented, Reasonable, and time-bound) which allows the patient to achieve a clear-cut goal in a perceived attainable time frame. The materials should be Evidence-based to show the best available outcome. The material needs to be written in a grade level between six and eight. This is because, most of the population has a lower level of reading and comprehension so the material needs to be written in a way that the lay population can understand. Consider using visual aids such as pictures and charts or graphs to help achieve higher rates of understanding. Don’t jump around from idea to idea, and limit the number of messages so that the reader does not feel overwhelmed with information.

Nurses are with patients more than any other medical team member and are supposed to advocate for their patients. Sometimes ethical principles arise like autonomy, but nurses are always required to respect the patient’s wishes, even if they don’t agree with them. When helping patients, nurses must remember that patients come from various ethnic groups, cultures, backgrounds, and beliefs. Therefore, nurses are to only supply the patients with the facts and allow them to make their decisions with what the patient believes is best for themselves or their family member. Having said that, I believe that breastfeeding for the infants during the first year is the best nutritious food that promotes normal infant growth and development and natural immunity.

If a mother is reluctant to breastfeed her infant, I would go over the advantages and nutritious benefits to having the baby breastfeed and also discuss alternative food options for the baby. Again, as nurses we must remember that patients have different beliefs, cultures, etc., that we must respect and allow the patients to make their own medical decisions.

According to our class textbook, Physical Examination and Health Assessment, there are four advantages to breastfeeding an infant that I would discuss with the mother of the infant. I would discuss and provide written information on these four benefits to breastfeeding:

1. Fewer food allergies and intolerances.

2. It reduces the likelihood of overeating.

3. Less cost than infant commercial formulas. No money is spent on formulas.

4. It increases mother-infant interaction time. Breastfeeding creates that close interacting between the mother and the infant.

In addition, I would also discuss with the mother other benefits to breastfeeding that include:

1. Human milk helps protect your baby from illnesses such as obesity, ear infections, leukemia, diarrhea, vomiting, SIDS, type II diabetes, and asthma (Office of Women’s Health).

2. It may help lower your risk for breast and ovarian cancers (USDA).

In fairness, I would also let the mother know of some challenges that may come with breastfeeding from personal experience when my daughters breastfeed with their mother. They include sore nipples, over or under supply of milk, engorgement, or breast infections.

There are times when a mother may choose not to breastfeed. I would offer alternatives and benefits for the mother that include:

1. Using milk from donor banks. This is still human milk and can provide the same benefit to the infant as if they were breastfed.

2. There are infant formulas that provide nutritious alternatives to human milk that have vitamins and nutrients (Kids Health).

3. Bottled formulas can be more convenient because either parent can feed the infant (Kids Health).

4. More flexibility for the mother because she can make a bottle and leave and allow someone else to feed the infant (Kids Health).

However, I would also advise the mother that no manufactured formula provides antibodies like human milk does. I believe that by providing the pro, cons, and facts to breastfeeding and other alternatives allows the mother to make a fair and balanced decision to feeding her baby.

“Mean, median, and mode are the three measures of central tendency used to describe study variables” (Grove & Cipher, 2017, p. 79). The mean is the average of all of the data. The median is the middle number when put in order and the mode is the number that comes up more frequently. The mean would be appropriate to use for learning about an area where average data such as the average of births per month in a hospital is needed in order to staff appropriately. Median could be used as useful data when talking about ages, for example the ages of women who are having children. An example of when it is appropriate for mode to be used would be when tracking illnesses that are going around, for example the flu versus strep, the one that would occur the most during that time. It would not be appropriate to use any of these if the data collecting is skewed in any way. The median is not the same as the mean and both of these values can be misrepresented in a case where the information is skewed such as wrong frequencies inputted the wrong way. The mode may not even be present depending on what data is being collected.

I have been working for the same health care system for 31 years now and have so much change. As one of the “older” staff members, and now a manager one ongoing and ill addressed issue is recruitment and retention. I see staff that is either; let’s call them tenured like me, or green and brand new nurses. There seem sot be no in between. As a system we must study the whys to this in order to stay competitive in today’s job market, while maintaining a high quality of care for our patients. We have a responsibility to the patient population to provide the best care, in best facility. This has become a problem for our specialty units and critical care areas simply due to the lack of experience. New nurses who are of the millennial age group are looking for the best bang for their buck. (Best areas to work, best areas to learn and best pay) If we as modern health care providers can’t provide this they tend to stay a year or two then move on. The day of the dinosaur like me who stays with and organization for their entire career seems to be over. Where I work we recently brought back our Nurse Extern program and just recently started implementation of a nurse residency program to entice new, intelligent, motivated and skilled nurses to our facility. As nurse shortages continue to be a growing problem nationwide, rural health care systems like mine will struggle to fill open positions unless we can offer something that no one else does. We hope that our nurse residency program can bolster our nurse extern program that has been quite successful in recruiting new young talent to our facility. Everything that I have read or seen is very positive regarding nurse residency programs and we hope holds true for us as well.
