Critical thinking as defined by (The Foundation for Critical Thinking, (n.d.) is the “ability to think in a systematic and logical manner with openness to question and reflect on the reasoning process used to ensure safe nursing practice and quality care”. Nurses must use critical thinking in every aspect of the nursing process. For example the nurse taking care of an elderly man with pneumonia who is requiring high flow oxygen, understands and uses critical thinking prior to showering the patient without continuous oxygen while in the bathroom. She understands that his tissue perfusion will be altered for such activity. Instead the RN chooses to bathe the patient while in bed, with continuous oxygen, also includes breaks to preserve energy while ensuring patient safety is maintained. Using such skill improves patient outcomes. “Critical thinking skills are very important in the nursing field because they are what you use to prioritize and make key decisions that can save lives” (NurseJournal.org, 2018).

“The term evidence-based practice has become pervasive in the health care industry. This concept signals a major shift in how health care providers deliver their services, and in how health care institutions function. It is no longer acceptable just to perform in a given way because “that’s how it’s always been done.”(Melnyk, B., & Fineout-Overholt, E. (2005). An example of evidence based research change would be instead of automatically inserting foley catheters for convenience of the nurse, the nurse instead would evaluate the need of an indwelling catheter and by doing such evaluation she/he prevents a hospital acquired infection.

Finally evidence base practice and the use of critical thinking both play important roles in providing safe and effective patient care, while improving patient outcomes. If a nurse does not use critical thinking while providing care, injury may happen.

Qualitative research method is done through observations and experiments in order to attain data from a population or sample. One of the characteristic of qualitative data is that they are huge in amount. These is not usually collected in a systematic manner and the qualitative researchers may not use any instruments while collecting data. They take field notes most of the time to help stock data or write down the key points or words. It is fortunate that recent advances in computer technology and software has made it possible to manage the mountain of words in an efficient way. The team should have many researchers in order to manage and organise data in an effective way. Having the man-power behind the organization of this method would cut down on the individual’s work by organizing survey data by question, respondent and sub-topic, and would save time and resources. It is important because the data found can be organized in a much simpler way for easy analysis. The group may desire to group all the responses for each questions together for example responses for question one together, question twos together and so on. When these methods are incorporated while performing a qualitative research study it would be beneficial to the research team in interpreting their results.

Grounded theory and phenomenology are the most common approaches to qualitative research used by nurses. Although there are differences between the two, they have much in common. Both take an interpretative approach in which the researcher seeks to explore real-life situations, and require a high degree of interaction between the researcher and the individual, groups or situations being examined; this usually takes the form of interviews and/or observations. Both grounded theorists and phenomenologists seek to collect and analyze data from participants’ perspectives and try to ensure their findings are not influenced by inflexible ideas. To achieve this they often involve participants in data analysis to increase the reliability of the findings. In brief, grounded theorists and phenomenologists both seek to explore individuals’ experiences in the context of the world in which they live. Because both approaches have so much in common it can sometimes be difficult to differentiate between them.

Differences

Phenomenology describes and explores experiences, which can only be done by collecting data from individuals who have lived through those experiences. Hence phenomenologists often refer to the “lived experience” and data is often limited to interviews, while findings are reported as a rich description of the experience drawing on characteristics identified during data analysis.

Grounded theory is a qualitative methodological approach in which the aim was to generate a “grounded theory” to describe and explain the phenomenon under study. Unlike phenomenologists, grounded theorists seek to include all data sources that might contribute to theory development. Interviews are commonly used but they might also include observations, diaries, images, past literature and research. Using a technique described as ‘constant comparison’, they compare all the data collected with all other data look for contradictory cases, which might challenge the emerging theory but will eventually strengthen it. This complex process of theoretical sampling, data collection and analysis can be extremely challenging.

Both grounded theorists and phenomenologists seek to understand peoples’ lives. Sticking to a single approach usually gives researchers the tools to undertake their research. There are differences but this does not mean that one approach is right and one is wrong. Grounded theory and phenomenology are research tools and one will not be suited to all jobs.

Ethnography focus on collective experience of a community/phenomenology focuses on the individuals. Ethnography studies the culture behavior, attitudes and beliefs and the data are collected through interviews, observations and analysis of documents it can take longer period than phenomenology. Phenomenology studies individuals’ experiences often are referred to as lived experiences and the interviewers are the main methods of collections

The similarities are that both involve social aspects and true-life experiences, they both seek to explore a subject’s experience in the setting of the world in which the subject lives.

In order to perform a study and gain statistical data, we need to start with a target population and then get a sample of that target population. An example of a sample would be to take a survey of 5,000 mothers with children under the age of one year old in Marion county. This would be a sample of all mothers in Marion county. In order to get the most accurate data from the study there are several types of sampling techniques used. There is cluster sampling, random sampling, stratified random sampling, convenience sampling and systematic sampling (“The visual learner,” n.d.).

Cluster sampling refers to the researcher separating the group into smaller groups called clusters. Then a simple random selection of clusters is picked from the population. Then the researcher can conduct his analysis of data from the sampled clusters. The most common form of cluster sampling used is a geographical cluster. An example of this is if a researcher wants to study the academic performance of high school students in China. The researcher can divide the entire population of China into individual clusters such as cities. Then the researcher can select a number of clusters depending on the research done through simple or systematic random sampling. Then, from the randomly selected cities the researcher can either include all the high school students as subjects or he can select a number of subjects from each cluster through simple or systematic random sampling.

Random sampling is where every member of the study population has an equal opportunity to be chosen to be in a study. Random sampling involves identifying each person in a target population and then randomly selecting a sample from that population. This allows every person of the study population to be represented without showing bias and minimizes errors. An example of this is when a there are 30 employees names drawn out of a hat from a company of 3,000 employees. Each person has equal opportunity to be drawn out of the hat.

Stratified random sampling is the division of a population into smaller groups known as strata. In stratified random sampling, or stratification, the strata are formed based on members’ shared attributes or characteristics. When running analysis or research on a group of individuals with similar characteristics, a researcher may find that the population size is too large to run a research on. To save time and money, an analyst may take on a more feasible approach by selecting a small group from the population. The small group used is referred to as a sample size, which is a subset of the population that is used to represent the population. There are a number of ways a sample may be selected from a population, one of which is the stratified random sampling method. An example is when an academic researcher would like to know the number of BSN students that got a job within three months of graduation in 2014-2015. It is noted that there were almost 216,000 BSN graduates for the year. It might be better to just take a simple random sample of 50,000 grads and run a survey or divide the population into strata and take a random sample from the strata. To do this, the researcher could create population groups based on gender, age range, race, country of nationality, and career background. A random sample would then be taken from each stratum in a number proportional to the stratum’s size when compared to the population. These subsets of the strata are then pooled to form a random sample.

A convenience sample is a group that is made up of individuals or elements that are easy to reach or obtain (Rumsey, 2010, p. 139). This is also referred to as a grab sample because we grab individuals from the population for our sample. An example of this is when a poll is being taken at a local mall or market. This type of sample is very easy to obtain but the lack of effort for the samples and the sample itself is ultimately worthless for believable statistical purposes.

Finally, there is systematic sampling is a type of probability sampling method where sample members from a larger population are selected according to a random starting point and a fixed, periodic sampling interval. This interval is calculated by dividing the population size by the desired sample size. Systematic sampling is still thought of as being random if the periodic interval is determined beforehand and the starting point is random. An example of this is if you want to sample 8 houses from a street of 120 houses. Then every 15th house is chosen after a random starting point between 1 and 15. If the random starting point is 11, then the houses selected are 11, 26, 41, 56, 71, 86, 101, and 116. But then if every 15th house was a “corner house” then this corner pattern could destroy the randomness of the sample.
